  1. Just to show much diversity there might be on this, Roy Smalley is my favorite announcer pairing with Dick Bremer. When I watch him, I feel like I get an unparalleled education in the intricacies and strategies of the game of baseball. Perhaps no coincidence that Smalley is the nephew of perhaps the greatest tactician as a manager I ever saw in Gene Mauch. I think Roy is most "in the zone" talking about the game and providing relevant insights. Maybe a tad comes from his being on some of those great 70’s hitting teams that I enjoyed so much and his excellence as a player. I like a lot of Dick’s sidekicks, really but Smalley is my fave....it’s really a talented group!!!
  2. Remember Tom Johnson, too? He was another find like Corbett who I think they got after he was with the Reds. His best two years were ’76 with 3-1, 2.61 and then in ’77 with the juggernaut offense, he went 16-7 with a 3.13 ERA and 146.2 IP all as a reliever!!! Bill Campbell was the real deal and I would rank him very high, maybe #2. He was 17-5 in relief in 1976 with 167.2 IP, 20 saves and a 3.01 ERA. One could make a case for that being the best relief season in the history of the Twins. It broke my heart when Calvin just let him walk in the dawn of free agency but then Bostock and Hisle, Ford, Carew were all purged because of salary! Poor Gene Mauch. That ’77 team could have been WS champs with a little pitching.
  3. I would rate Joe Nathan #1, clearly BUT the biggest omission was Bill Campbell. I’ve followed the Twins since 1964 and with that perspective, for me, Campbell is #2 ahead of Guardado, Aguilera. See below Campbell’s Twins stats capped by his 17-5 season as a reliever!!! Unfortunately as with all his good players, Calvin Griffith let him go in free agency for financial reasons 1976-78 was grim with all the talent exodus including Campbell, Burgmeir, Hisle, Bostock, Ford (left after 78 season), Carew. THAT was painful!!! 1-Nathan 2-Campbell https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/campbbi02.shtml 3-Aguilera 4-Perroniski https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perraro01.shtml 5-Guardado Honorable Mention: Mike Marshall, Doug Corbett, Tom Johnson, Tom Hall
  4. An attempt at an all decade team for the 1970’s LF Bostock CF Hisle RF S Braun 3B Cubbage SS Smalley 2B Carew 1B Killebrew C Mitterwald DH Oliva Starter: Goltz, Blyleven, Perry, J Hughes, Kaat Reliever: Bill Campbell, Tom Burgmeier, T Johnson (1977) Bench Danny Thompson, D Ford, B Randall, Wilfong
  5. Bobby Darwin seems a real good pick to me. I remember him and in the time I followed him he was good and powerful.
  6. Good catch (no pun intended!). I lived in Toledo OH and watched Engle play regularly where I think he edged out Wade Boggs for a batting title and played a great RF with a rifle arm! I don’t think he ever caught a game for the Mud Hens who were Twins farm team for about 8 years. I became fan as 8 yr old in Orlando FL when my young self was impressed by s spring training rout of the Reds. I was hooked until now with the real intense years coming from listening to Herb Carneal "A pleasant good evening to you from the Big A in Anaheim"
  7. My nominee would be Glenn Adams who hit .338 in 1977. His slash line was .338/.376/.468. He had 8 RBIs in a 19-12 win at Chicago White Sox, a game I listened to from my home in Toledo, OH on 670 WMAQ with Harry Carey announcing! In 1977 he had only 269 AB, playing for Gene Mauch, who was a proponent of platooning back when teams used less pitchers and you could afford to platoon. Mauch was a brilliant manager and who know-how great that 1977 team could have been if Griffith didn’t let go of via free agency and trade, all of the stars of the team, Carew being the last to depart after 1978 season, a dark moment in Twins history but Griffith made Carl Pohlad look like George Steinbrenner !!!!!
  8. Could open an early door for Kirilloff or Larnach.
  9. Smalley is my favorite fill-in analyst, too! I feel like I’m getting a doctorate baseball education when he’s on. Plus I have a soft spot in my heart, having followed his career. He must have gotten some of that amazing knowledge from talking to Gene Mauch as he’s Mauch’s nephew. I thought Mauch was a tactical genius!
  10. Jack Morris, LaTroy Hawkins, off the top of my head. Smalley is my favorite, Morneau was quite good I thought.
  11. It has to be the work of the ONION.
  12. Don’t forget that Thorpe had a 6.18 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. He was pretty bad down the stretch. That said, I realize he could grow and be a valuable starter. But if Walker is healthy now, and he might be, I would much prefer his career 3.95 ERA to Thorpe’s 6.18. Smeltzer seemed up and down to me. I’d rather have someone with experience. Then if things aren’t working out or there are injuries and Thorpe and/or Smeltzer have strung up several good starts in AAA, they can be the insurance policy. DObnak, I’m not sure about....he was good down the stretch but when the bright lights of NY were on, he collapsed. Maybe a little more AAA time for him.
  13. I think it’s a great idea! He’s two years out from Tommy John now. If he passes a physical, I’d say sign him quick! I’m really uncomfortable about starting the season with 2 unproven rookies and they would make a lot of starts. Depth in starting pitching is needed. Best case, he could fill the #4 sport, then Twins would only have to go with one rookie or even have some opener or bullpen games for the #5 spot til Rich Hill is ready. Maybe this just shows how avid a fan I am but this move would actually excite me!
  14. I like Rooker a lot and he hut very well at Rochester. It seems to me he is MLB ready and they’d do well to give him chance.
  15. I hadn’t heard of the guy but you made such a strong case that I would agree about signing him as a 5th starter (an important role).
  16. I reject the premise that the Twins should cripple themselves with a $135 payroll. Did Jim Pohlad announce that number? They have a chance to win a world championship. Surely Jim Pohlad, the least cheap owner the Twins have had in decades can stretch to 150-160million, You do realize that with a juggernaut team on the field that has the starting pitching of other playoff teams will result in lots of sellouts and he will get all the money back. My two cents. They should start with Ryu or Bumgarner and also sign Donaldson by being very aggressive and outbidding the competition.
  17. I would be pretty happy with that but here’s my World Champion plan: Using Spotrac.com I took the top 19 salaries for the 2020 Twins and came up with 95.02 million. I read an article from a team exec that he/she expects the final salary for Cole to be 280 million over 8 years, which is 35 million per. Twins should swoop in and blow Cole away while Dogers/NY are much lower and do the deal tomorrow or Tuesday. Add Donaldson at 54/3 = 18 million Then fill out with four MLB minimum salaries such as Stashak, Graterol adds another 2.23 million. This is $160 million dollar payroll for 25 players and a possible World Championship for at least 3 years or more. Why not do it??? They’ll bring in much more money with a real WS Champion caliber team all year.
  18. Strasburg. They actually can afford him, aren’t they only around 80 some million now? They could pay him 5/150, still lower than Mauer’s contract but a huge, much needed asset at this point. My mission would be, just get him, period, whatever it takes.
  19. I would do the same thing, sign Moustakis, move Sano to first. Polanco at SS and either Arraez or Villar at 2B. I think Brent Rooker is ready to step up in case of OF injuries. I’d try to get both Wheeler and Bumgarner and a legitimate 5th starter, someone like Robbie Ray, someone established....our young pitchers are too much of a gamble. We need to behave payroll-wise and player acquisition-wise like nothing short of a team that expects to be World champions for multiple years. It’s there for the taking.
  20. I would not trade for mediocre at best pitcher. And I think Rooker and Celestino is way too much. I think they both cn be stars, especially Rooker’s bat. The whole point this season is to go for top pitchers like Strasburg, Wheeler, Bumgarner. Why wouldn’t they want to pitch for a team that has a powerful offense and lots of money to spend. We’ve had too much mediocre pitching. It’s time to strike for a dynasty with multiple world championships....2,3,4. There’s no excuse not to, probably for a $160 million payroll, it could be done.
  21. I agree about signing Moose for 3B and no to Gibson as well.
