Article: Byron Buxton Recalled
Dantes929 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Reading these pages the last several years there is a pretty clear consensus. Twins are the slowest team in the majors to promote their top prospects to the big leagues. They should promote their young stars and let them learn at the big league level. The top prospects they do promote, they promote too soon and for the wrong reasons. and hinder their development by letting them fail at the big league level. Personally, I am ok with this move since I didn't really want him sent down in the first place. -
Yes, it was definitely cherry picking. I believe I 2nd guess manager decisions less than most. I just remember saying to my wife about the Angels game that 6 innings was enough. Third time through the order. He hadn't pitched past 5 yet. Just his 2nd game. Let him feel good about a 6 inning shutout and let the relievers start the inning. Not hindsight because I said it all before it happened but I admit it was just a gut feeling that he should be pulled at that point. The other game I just saw that he was pulled with 2 outs and bases loaded and that all three guys scored. Cherry picking but the overriding principal is that he only got 4 starts. I am guessing that he would have a better ERA than Nolasco at this point mainly because he has a better career ERA (AL vs NL to boot), a better ERA with the Twins and a better ERA last year. I am all for any of the young guys replacing him because of earning promotion. Not so much for Nolasco getting the pick based on 20 innings.

Best career ERA of any starter but Duffey. 2nd best ERA on the team last year. SSS this year with ERA inflated due to Molitor not pulling him soon enough one game and reliever giving up all three runs in a bases loaded two out situation in another.. Milone should not have been sent down in the first place. Nolasco on the other hand was ok in a very SSS and was kept instead. I also would have preferred Milone to Hughes. When Berrios or Meyer are performing well enough to push for promotion then Milone can be the guy that gets dumped. I prefer to see a guy with limited stuff and great command to someone with limited stuff and very poor command.

Article: Nine Innings Of Notes
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Duffey has pitched more against the Indians than any other team and they have obviously figured out that he is just a two pitch guy. I wonder how much more of a shutout he would have had if he just had a third pitch. Just like last year I feel like the Twins have a pretty good shot when Santana or Duffey start. Next level of confidence is in Berrios mainly because Gibson hasn't pitched much. Would still prefer Milone to NOlasco or maybe even Hughes. .- 27 replies

Article: What's Next For Byron Buxton?
Dantes929 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You may be right but then again Molitor had a lot less movement than either Span or Buxton. I never, ever had thoughts of Buxton turning into Mike Trout. If he has the high .200's batting average and OBP over .350 like Span I would be just fine with that given his other assets. Hoping for something closer to Molitor but anything between Span and Molitor will make me happy. 22 years old, missed a season to a concussion and may have similar recovery time to Mauer and Morneau. Many wrote those two off as finished so I don't regard any predictions as worthy. -
Jepsen was awesome for us last year as was May. I thought Perkins was the key because I figured someone like Pressley would step up and that we would have young guys ready to contribute. Bringing in added quality depth would probably have changed very little to this point. We were still going to give the ball to those three late in the game in tight spots and they would still have failed. Now is when depth would have mattered with Perkins down and the others not doing well. I do think Jepsen is better than what he has shown but it does hurt to think we could just as easily be close to .500 if the guys we were counting on did their job better. I liken it to when we faced the Yankees and everyone said we didn't have the talent to compete and yet we had games where we had the lead in the 9th with Nathan pitching. Sometimes its not so much about talent as performance.

I don't expect what others seem to expect out of him. At least not until I actually see him pitch. I would be thrilled if he gives us what Duffey gave us last year. Of course I would be thrilled if Duffey were given the chance to give us what he gave us last year. I just hope he pitches so well it will be impossible to demote him when Gibson and Santana come back.

Article: Give Alex Meyer A Chance To Start
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Milone has been undervalued his entire time here and probably his entire career. Four starts isn't enough to pass judgement. I am reasonably sure that after another 4 starts the pecking order will look different. However, a move to the bullpen is not the same as a demotion to the minors and I would also like to see Meyer while he is hot. 6 man rotation? -
Article: Twins Promote Jose Berrios
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have been heavily in favor of Duffey. He had a great year last year in the miniors, a great year last year in the majors, a great start to the minors and was doing just fine until getting hit by that batted ball. That all said, with Meyer pitching so well and for who knows how long I would really like to see him in the rotation. Does anyone know Duffey's status? Maybe it is Gibson and Santana to DL and we have Nolasco, Hughes, Milone, Meyer and Berrios. Maybe they go to a 6 man rotation. Too bad Buxton and Kepler got sent down. Remember 2011 where a bad AAA team got promoted to the big leagues because of injuries. It was hard to see much light at the end of that tunnel,. If we see a team of Kepler, Buxton, Arica, Rosario, Sano, Polanco, Meyer, Duffey, May, Berrios in place by the end of the year I there will be plenty of light regardless of the record. -
I would change "couple" to "few" but the idea is the same. Duffey was great in the minors last year and he was great in the majors and he has been great so far in the minors. Weak ST because the Twins wanted him working on his change up shouldn't be held against him in any way shape or form. Thank you for pointing out some details about Milone. I will add that he left his last game with bases loaded and two outs and would have had a good line if the reliever had gotten the last out. Milone had the 3rd best ERA (ff counting Duffey) last year and has the best career ERA on the whole rotation and that is not small sample size. Three games is small sample size. I am ok with Milone in the pen and I am anxious to see Berrios and Meyer but decisions should be made after at least 6 starts. When the Twins were 0-9 I said a lot can look different in 10 days. They have been 5-2 since then. The same kind of dynamic can work with the rotation. If Milone has a couple gems and a different guy has a couple clunkers the world will look different. They should all have a few more starts to sort out the pecking order.

Article: Has Average Joe Returned?
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree. I just remember a decent stretch last year preceding an injury that prompted the Trib to write an article about how he was back. I took it as a good sign but was not convinced. I like that it looks like he is just trying to square it up rather than trying to pull or trying to hit it out. I like his willingness to bunt for a hit if they shift him I can live with the shift beating him on well hit balls as long as he continues to produce well hit balls. SSS or not, these are the kinds of streaks that make me like watching Mauer. I was never one to complain when he sits out with injuries. I don't want him to play hurt and hit .260 even if it is better than the rest of the team because that is not special. What is special is long streaks of him hitting .350 or better. -
Article: Has Average Joe Returned?
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am on of those that thought Joe might still have a batting title left in him but no, I don't expect him to hit .372 with a .472 OBP. I don't think his career averages are unattainable though. Of course it is SSS and people forget he had a nice stretch last year fairly early in the season also. I don't recall him looking this solid though. I lhave always wanted him in the 2nd spot (his whole career) and a huge side benefit of not striking out as much is walking more. OBP is still king in my book -

He also had the hit that could just as easily scored Nunez for the game winner. He looks good up there. -
I am hoping for it this year. If our pitching stays the same I expect it. I said they might as lose 9 in a row and then win the world series, setting a new standard for teams that are slow out of the gate. Seriously, I have followed this team for a long time and these boards as long. 10 days can make a huge difference in how we see this team. Go 7-3 and the outlook will be different.

On the injury front I think it worth while to mention that two years ago Sano got an injury that erased a whole year while playing third base. Last year his biggest injury was a pulled ham string while DH'ing which could possibly have been avoided by being loose while playing the outfield. I didn't see the play he blew but he was hitting very poorly before that. He didn't seem to struggle too much in ST while playing the outfield. Jepsen and Perkins were better last year than any of the FA's available and Jepsen was absolutely a shut down guy for us last year. Now Jepsen has already blown more games than he did all last year and Perkins has more blown saves than he did the entire first half of last year. Getting two free agents isn't going to change the fact that Jebsen and Perkins were going to pitch in those situations. Buxton had started to hit in ST and Rosario did very well and now neither can even make contact. My point of all this is that these guys could all just as easily been playing well and we would be 6-0 instead of 0-6. Sometimes it is up to the players we have to actually perform. Instead of someone stepping up as they did to a good ST we have someone failing each time during our miserable season so far. I say so far because it is time for the Twins to go 18-10 from this point.

Article: Beating Vegas: The Minnesota Twins
Dantes929 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
According to the pythagorean we won two more games than we should have last year so starting in the hole two games but I am always optimistic and I see a lot of reasons for it compared to last year. Mauer better, Buxton instead of HIcks. Santana for a whole year. Escobar over 2015 D. Santana. Park and Sano instead of Hunter/Arcia/Vargas/Sano. Pen might be shallow but May and Jepsen over who we had for the first half of year. If Duffey was in the rotation from the start I would feel a lot better about predicting 160-2. Instead I will go with 87 wins. -
Article: Player Predictions: DH Byung Ho Park
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The team OPS was .704 last year with many of the starters in the mid .700's. Upper .700's from Park would be aces with me. Man just looking at those stats makes me yearn for a career average year from Mauer. I still think he has it in him. -
Article: Opening Day Roster Nearly Set
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So no one figured out Duffey last year in AAA or during the pennant race in the fall but that is small sample size while a mediocre spring while working on a pitch is somehow a decider? I am not against working on the third pitch but his curveball was pretty special last year especially all the variations on it and his fastball was decent. What did you mean sitting on his curveball and hitting his fastball? If you meant they were letting it go that is a fairly easy solution of simply throwing his curveball for strikes which he showed he was able to do last year. I think Nolasco was overrated when they signed him but probably underrated now so it would not surprise me if he did a decent job in the 5 spot but I had higher expectations than that from Duffey.- 92 replies

Article: Player Predictions: CF Byron Buxton
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am more concerned about the on base part. I would like to see a lot of bunts down the 3rd base side. I am less concerned about the stolen bases. I want him to try just enough make the other team think about it. -

Article: Calling It: Miguel Sano Will Be AL MVP
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'll take Buxton but am not going to quibble. Lets just agree that the MVP will be a Twin. MVP for Buxton, home run title for Sano and batting title for Mauer. This is the time of year for these kinds of thoughts. Anyone else going to the home opener? -
Article: Player Predictions: CF Byron Buxton
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Valencia rode infield singles and bloopers to a career year in 2010. If Buxton can get a few of those early to help him relax and not stress out about average I can see him doing very well. Of course, a slow start can get into anyone's head but especially rookies. If he gets on less than .320 I will be a little disappointed. I will predict a .350+ OBP after the break which will be pretty awesome from the leadoff spot.. -
Article: Three Big Takeaways From Camp
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If he hits like he is touted to I would be just fine with Sano at DH until Mauer is gone anyway. I honestly think the Twins were fine with him at DH as well until Park happened. The issue really is as much about Park as it is about Sano. If Park fails then we are back to Sano at DH and Arcia or Kepler in right. If Park, Plouffe, Mauer and Sano all have good offensive years I think people will be more forgiving of poor right field defense. If any of them struggle then it changes the equation.- 36 replies

Article: Three Big Takeaways From Camp
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When saying this year you mean Spring Training I am right with you. Maybe he was taking 100 fly balls every day in practice. While this does not replicate some of the spin from live ball it would still be a reasonable starting point. However, I have not heard they have even done this. While I downplayed some of the concerns and said either he had it or he didn't it was predicated that he would see tons of action in ST to figure out which it is.- 36 replies
