  1. First of all, I am excited about Meyer as well. He was my pitcher to click and Colabello my batter. He has great stuff but a 3.48 ERA isn't really anything to be excited about, he is learning a new pitch and unless you think he is going to cause the Twins to contend all year promoting him now at the possible cost of a year of having him at all much less a year of control is hardly worth rushing him. 2nd of all but someone please correct me if I am wrong, right now he is the 4th most effective starter in Rochester's rotation!! Darnell has a 1.69 ERA in 4 starts. Kris Johnson in 4 starts has a 2.86 ERA. Pino in 2 starts has a 1.17 ERA. If you are going to judge performances this early then why start with Meyer?
  2. Being promoted 1 level for every 250 at bats that you hit over .300 gets you to the majors pretty quickly if you are not blocked and show improvement defensively.
  3. "The ball bounces the same at both levels. And his current struggles in the field are making no difference to his hitting success. If he's going to master playing SS, once the weather gets more summer-like, it matters little whether he works on mastering it at A+ or AA. But if you hold him back on his hitting development- as all the evidence suggests would be the case in this instance" Absolutely true about the ball bouncing the same at both levels. Less than a month of hitting .361 does not rise to the level of all the evidence suggests, imo so not concerned at this point about retarding his progress. I am not against a promotion offensively more because he had a solid year last year but lets say he continues to hit well and is promoted in June. If he hits great there or just hits well and improves his fielding I don't see anything that would prevent his promotion by mid 2015 season to the Twins except similar development by Santana and good performance from Dozier. He will be promoted if he continues to hit like this but I am guessing there are a lot of guys in the system capable of hitting .360 for 22 games. The .308 over 500 at bats last year backing it up makes me feel better about him.
  4. "if this team had drafted Stanton or Fernandez, would they even be in the majors yet" .357 for a month with horrendous defense does not equate to Stanton track record. His path is similar to Sano minus Sano's injury. Stanton did play 3 years in the minors so my answer to that one is yes, he would be. Fernandez was 14-1 with a 1.75 ERA in the minors with a 10.6 strikeout per 9 and a 2.4 walk per 9. Which one of our pitchers has done that? So my answer too that would be yeah, maybe not quite as quick but within a half year. Garza is probably the closest and he was promoted and did not do nearly as well as Fernandez which brings us to another approach. Which minor leaguer has performed so well with the Twins once brought up that has made you say "we should have brought them up a lot quicker"?
  5. I have said it before but if we could get as highly rated a shortstop perhaps it is Sano that should be traded.
  6. Ok, for starters don't feel sorry for Drew. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't he have to turn down a $14 mil offer from the Sox for the draft pick to attach to him? 2nd, I was on board with signing him because I think he would be an improvement but he really isn't that great a hitter. .253 with 10 homer power. I would like him but wouldn't love him. The creativity I was looking for earlier in the year would be to trade Sano for a top shortstop prospect . The ratings that showed Buxton and Sano in the top 5 prospects in all of baseball had two shortstops in the top 5 as well. Xander Bogaerts for example in which case Boston could have kept Drew and inserted Sano and we would have Xander to go along with Plouffe. Of course that kind of trade is off the table since Sano got hurt.
  7. We have already faced Shields, Price and Sale among others. Its not like we are going to face Verlander and Kershaw 3 out of 4 games for the next 3 weeks. Lets face it. We are underdogs every series we play until we match up with Houston so these teams shouldn't be any more intimidating than anyone else. Pitch well and play well and let the chips fall where they may. I have found that being the underdog can give you some edge. Fielder was the difference in several games in the past. Lineup is good but not quite as intimidating as it was.
  8. I am ok that 6 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts, 1 hit and 1 walk trumps 11 strikeouts, 3 walks and 4 hits. Doesn't take anything away from Meyer. I thought Pelfrey pitched pretty well last night. Kept the ball down with good movement. You give all these pitchers at least 6 starts to both see what their body of work is in that time and which way they are trending. I am pulling for Pelfrey but am not attached to him. If he doesn't have an official quality start in his next two and Meyer has two good ones then no problem switching them up or switching Deduno and Pelfrey and holding off on Meyer for another round of 6 starts. I am excited about Meyer. He and Colabello were my picks to click but these things have to play out. I am guessing Meyer and May will both get their chances before August if they continue to pitch well.
  9. Mauer is scoring runs at a pretty good clip. On pace for 126 runs. Not saying that is all that is expected of him but being in noticeable slump and still getting on base .360 of the time is still productive. Just not as productive as we expect him to be or as productive as he will likely be. Plouffe, Kubel and Colabello will cool off but there are plenty of areas where improvement is likely from other players also.
  10. I would not give up on Hicks either and of course Pinto is no sure thing either. Anyone remember Valencia and Parmalee's start? Problem I had with Hicks is that there didn't seem to be enough upside to his being a switch hitter and also that he never really dominated (much as I dislike that word) at the lower levels. He had the one nice year at AA but was hardly busting out. Same thing happened with Plouffe. He was being given a shot at the twins without really earning the promotion until he busted out a bit in 2011. He is now looking pretty good and Hicks might be capable of the same path but might not have the same extended opportunity with Buxton and other prospects vying for the same spots.
  11. Any news on Buxton or Rosario? How about just a status update.
  12. Promote him if there is room. Trade him if there is a good offer. Let him keep mashing until there is room or until there is a good offer. I am all for promotions when earned and he is earning it but there still has to be a spot available and no, Mauer would have to bat .267 all year before that spot should be considered. Parmalee can hardly complain about lack of opportunity.
  13. "Friday was a good reminder that there is a reason these guys are at the levels they are at, that there is still work to be done." I rarely take this kind of tone but how does this account for the major league Twins? Friday was not really a reminder of anything except that anyone can have a bad day. I am speaking of the pitching. The comment is appropriate for the defensive play but that of course encompasses more than just one outing.
  14. "He shouldn't be taking starts from either Dean or Gilmartin, IMHO. Give him the BJ Hermsen treatment" Yes, Diamond was penciled in as the Opening Day starter in 2013 and lets not forget that he earned it. Statistically he was one of the best 30 starters in 2012 which in my book made him a #1 starter and also depending on the definition an Ace. If you say there are only about a dozen Aces then no, he was not one of them. Just don't forget that he was really good for a full season and it may have been the injury that derailed him. I am completely ok with giving him chances to earn his way back and I am completely ok with not bringing him back until he has earned it.
  15. "In other words, if he were batting 2nd or anywhere else, it isn't clear that he would still have 5 homers" Almost certainly not but then again I doubt he continues to leadoff every third game with a dinger either. In theory if Mauer is on ahead of him he will get more breaking balls in an attempt at the double play but when ahead in the count will get better fastballs to avoid putting the first two guys on. If Colabello is the real deal, Hicks starts to produce and Buxton turn into what we want them to be Mauer might end up being a good #5 or even #4 to put an OBP guy in between power. Buxton, Hicks, Colabello, Mauer, Sano, Rosario, Dozier, Plouffe, Pinto. A guy can dream.
  16. " I still believe Mauer is best in the #3 hole. " Why do you believe that? All things considered it actually makes a great deal more sense to bat Mauer leadoff and Dozier 2nd. 5 runs from leadoff spot could turn into as many as 10 runs if Mauer is on when Dozier hits his home runs. Mauer gets on base at a great rate but his power is mostly doubles. Theses attributes beg to be at the top of the order. Why is he best in the 3 hole? Just curious to know your rationale.
  17. Whoops. Got off topic. Crain and Guerrier went through similar periods of ineffectiveness. No reason to give up on these guys but no reason to keep him in the same 8th inning position either. Is he eligible for demotion? If a player agrees to it does it matter if the team ran out of options? I think Crain was sent down twice, rebounded and came back better than ever.
  18. Just like you won't find a single post opposing signing Mauer to a long term contract back in 09 but now they all claim they knew it was a bad deal.I remember saying it was a bad baseball decision but I wasn't opposed to it because of the PR. I also said there was no need to do it at the time because his value would never be higher than after an MVP season anyway. I still won't criticize the contract though. They kind of had to given the situation at the time and he is still a very good baseball player. People forget the really great streaks of hitting he had before 2011 and I still believe he has some of those streaks left in him.
  19. Michael would make another good story about not giving up on guys too early. Is he still at shortstop and what is his defensive capability?
  20. "I was high on Pelfrey to start out the season thinking he's two years removed from TJ, but I'm one or two more train-wreck starts away from hopping off that train." But that's the thing. No one is giving him the one or two more chances and the assumption is that they will be train wrecks. Nolasco was horrible his 1st two starts and Hughes and Correia were not much better and Hughes still isn't. Last year the leash was 10 games. Better guys waiting in the wings but the leash should still be at least 6 games. 4 more times around the rotation and then start talking about who Deduno or Meyer should replace if those two are still throwing well.
  21. "You CAN have one hole in the lineup...(like in the) NL." The difference is, in the NL, every team has one hole in the lineup. " Actually, you CAN have a hole in the lineup in the AL also and more than just the pitcher in the NL. Contending teams Atlanta had 2 regular position players hit .184 or less. Cards had 1 position player hit .217 with no power. Pirates had 3 below .226. Tampa had 1 at .233, Cleveland had 2 at .225 or lower and Oakland had one at .226. Its a team game and the problem with the Twins last year is that those numbers were the norm rather than the exception. At least he DOES play good defense at an important defensive position. I agree that it is a little silly to have a guy like that be a switch hitter just like I believe it was silly to let Hicks stick with it. It just seems like the upside of batting left against righties is probably what he would bat right handed against righties so what is the point?
  22. "Is anyone else interested in seeing if BullDozier can remedy the shortstop situation? " Not until a guy like Rosario is the one to replace him at 2nd. Then I would be really interested.
  23. Pelfrey's 1st start really wasn't all that bad. This last one was but mostly because he was walking guys before the home runs. Baker and Radke used to get off to slow starts in April as well Pelfrey did pretty well in the middle months last year. Way too early to give up on him or anyone else for that matter. Deduno out of the pen isn't bad in and of itself. If he has a 3 ERA out of the pen the wildness is no more of an issue than when he was starting. You notice it because of a wild pitch costing you a run but a 3 ERA is a 3 ERA. What makes it bad is that he can probably outperform at least 2 of the guys in the rotation. By year end the rotation will be Meyer, Deduno, Pelfrey, Gibson and Hughes or Nolasco. You give them all a chance (6 times through rotation maybe) but basically you have laid 4 guys with 4.3 career ERA's and a very good prospect at Anderson's feet wanting him to turn them into 4.00 ERA guys. If instead they are over 5.00 collectively in June then it should be proof enough that Anderson has been the common denominator.
  24. No doubt you were saying the same about Colabello and Kubel. Small sample size so of course the jury is out on both of those guys but same applies to Bartlett. For the record I thought they should send him down in order to earn his way to the Bigs, but I thought the same of Kubel. If they end up being right about Kubel and Colabello I can certainly give them a pass on Bartlett.
