  1. Its not all about that. They paid Nishioka a pretty penny rather than Hardy so I don't think it was fiscal related. Wasn't about money with Ortiz. Garza was traded. Span, Revere and Santana traded also though Santana was about the money. Who would prefer to have Span right now over Alex Meyer? Revere over May? Revere and Span way below Hicks in OBP which is the main ingredient they each bring to the table. I'll say again, as long as Hicks gets on base you won't hear too much complaining from me. Still think he should have stayed a right side hitter rather than switch hitting.
  2. I agree with that. Makes me question all the things they say about Buxton as well. Right now I would place Hicks behind Kirby, Hunter, Gomez, Span, and Revere defensively even with Revere's terrible arm and Gomez's erratic arm. This was a guy that was toted enough defensively that you immediately thought his floor would be a fast Span. If he gets a hang of the hitting I like him for a corner, Buxton or no Buxton.
  3. Fans on these boards always talk so fondly about those years and with good reason but partly they forget what made them special. These teams were mostly developed from our minor league system or trading for prospects. They did not win every year and regardless of what people say now, no one saw 1987 happening before it happened. There was a good core but things fell apart and came together again often. It wasn't just a long enjoyable upward all the time kind of thing. Beating the Vegas odds of over 100-1 against was part of what made 1987 special. Both Atlanta and Minnesota coming off 1990 seasons in last place and also being Vegas 100-1 against made 1991 extra special. Those that look back on those years fondly and can't imagine it happening ever again with these Twins are kind of missing the magic of baseball.
  4. But I would not trade a couple walks for each double. Not much different with Parmalee. If his home run rate drops (and it almost certainly will) and he doesn't raise the average and OBP he will be back on waivers.
  5. I am just guessing here but I would say last year's team did not take lot of pitches. The pitch per plate appearance may have still been high because it takes at least 3 pitches to strike a guy out and we struck out a lot. Taking a lot of pitches is a good thing Not only do you get more walks but pitchers have to come into the zone more often resulting in better pitches to hit overall. I always said that Revere was worthwhile if he got on base at a .330 clip and good at .350 or better. Hicks has been on base at .350 this month. His current clip of .331 would have been 3rd on last year's team. Pitcher's will adjust so I agree he has to do whatever it takes to keep that OBP up. If its by hitting a few homers so they have to be careful or if it means bunting more, whatever it takes. He is playing pretty well right now so give it a rest for a while.
  6. I like your take on it. Twins fans constantly point to the 1st round busts of the Twins as proof on incompetence but the truth is every team I looked at (central division plus Yankees and several others) have about the same history of busts far outweighing successes. As you alluded to, every 1st rounder is a potential Hall of Famer if you read their scouting report at their best but they are about 50 times more likely never to see a day in the majors than they are to be all stars. I won't 2nd guess much regardless of who they pick and who succeeds but there will definitely be a lot of people who will, especially 4 years from now.
  7. They flamed out with Nishioka but at the time I thought the leading hitter in Japan was worth a flyer. Just didn't like giving up Hardy for the security blanket purposes with Casilla and Plouffe unproven in the infield also. Sano being in the top 5 prospects makes up for that boo boo, IMo. Twins are back for the moment at .500 and have the top rated minors system. Why, exactly, do you shudder? I shudder at the thought of the Wolves drafting the best guy. Twins, not so much.
  8. Thanks Steve. I hadn't looked too far on Gordon so didn't think he rated as well on what I read. Now I dug a little farther and he certainly does look good. But then the question is why did Seth pick Turner to profile when they just ran an article yesterday showing a consensus for Gordon? I guess you know a college kid has faced better pitchers and Turner has done very well in college but so few of these kids make it anyway I would go with the highest projected upside.
  9. If they needed a guy today I don't see how you could justify taking Meyer or May over Darnell. Of course barring injury there are going to be at least two more and probably at least 3 more rotations before they are going to replace any of the Twins rotation after Correia's decent start against the Padres. That will give more time for evaluation between the 3 as well as Pelfrey.
  10. Kind of my point but I don't know how low they think he will fall. Waste to take him in the 1st round if they can get him in the 2nd. I really have no idea.
  11. Signing him to an extension now would be buying high. Nothing in his career says he will keep this up and no GM is going to think he is suddenly a .310 hitter and give us commensurate value. If they do then jump at it but they won't. He will regress to his norm but still a good share time guy. I heard he blamed Oakland for his poor average because they told him he had to go to right field on every pitch no matter what.
  12. Who was the 4th top pitching prospect that needed TJ surgery. It seems likely all the top guys will need it at some point so there might be something to be said for getting it out of the way early. We are hoping for a rotation mix of Hughes, Gibson, Berrios, May, Meyer, Darnell and Stewart down the road that can stay together for a few years so having another guy with a later target date might not be a bad thing.
  13. I am anxious to see May as well but it goes against the grain to hope Correia continues to do poorly just so May gets his chance. Keep in mind that Darnell did well and is doing well also so it is hard to pick May over him. 4 walks in the minors feels like the equivalent of 5 or 6 walks in the majors so I would like that number to come down. I have never seen him play but in build and stuff May feels like Phil Hughes 1.0. Hughes is doing awesome now but it has taken him a while. Pelfrey had a very good start and if his velocity and command produce a couple more good starts at Rochester he might be the guy they exchange with Correia if Correia struggles. My prediction is that Correia has a quality start tonight which will put off any action for a couple more times through the rotation.
  14. If hitting from the left side is an advantage because the batter is closer to 1st base then the advantage should be taken for all it is worth. Batting left, Hicks should be bunting at least once a game. I would bet he could add 50 points to his average doing that alone.
  15. I don't know if it is true or not but you can hardly blame the failure of the last three years as being too focused on contact hitting because they have been so bad at it. In fact last year the team was close to league average in power and at the bottom in OBP while setting team records in strikeouts. If anything, the last three years have been a display of swinging too hard trying to pull the ball rather than anything else. Not sure if it is still true but the stats of the team a couple weeks ago showed that the only real difference in this year's offense and last year's offense was OBP as a result of a lot more walks.
  16. Pretty unfair. There are homers that are homers anywhere and there are homers that would be off the wall in some parks and outs in other parks. Cano has averaged about 28 homers in his last 4 years with the Yankees but now has 1 with Seattle. I saw two he hit this weekend that would have had a good chance to get out at many parks. Hrbek's homers were out at any park while Mauer even in his MVP year had homers at the dome that would definitely not have gone out at Target. Its not just distance but weather. The Rockies for example have been near the top of the league for runs scored for many years without having the cast to do so at many other parks.
  17. I can see why they would just want him facing righties but otherwise don't get why days off or spot duty would help him catch up to fastballs. I also know they didn't bring him in for defensive purposes but unfortunately he is currently one of the best options.
  18. As far as May goes I guess I would rather have an inconsistent starter than an inconsistent reliever.
  19. "During that span, he is hitting .386 with a .462 on-base percentage. Tough to complain about that." Are you new? He could hit .686 with an .886 OBP and there would be fans that complain about him.
  20. "It essentially cost the Twins that game. " Well, much like the Buckner grounder its more that it cost the Twins a fair chance at the game. If you make the play and you would have won then an error costs you the game. If the score is tied when you make it then there was probably a close to even chance you were going to lose anyway.
  21. "There's something to be said about taking care of your young players for improving clubhouse morale. It's really not that much money and it could end up saving the Twins some (a lot of money) in the long run." There is also something to be said about keeping a player hungry. I didn't like the Span or Blackburn or Harris or Lamb deals. I am generally a mid to long term guy but we have him already for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Buying him out now for what you probably would pay him anyway seems like needless risk. Buyouts can happen anytime. Players agree to longer term in their arb years because of injury risk and a guaranteed big payday. No real need or benefit to it now. Yes, the twins have a ton of money. If things go the way we want them to we will also have a good core of guys who will eventually be using it up. No need to be reckless with it and tie it up now. I have always liked Dozier and hope his OBP rate continues the upward trend. He is a nice piece of the puzzle but you can still hedge your bet next year or the year after.
  22. Sano, Rosario and Buxton have been a huge disappointment so far though partly out of their hands. On the flip side, Santana has been a pleasant surprise as has Pino and Darnell. May isn't far off and if Meyer has a season or two of Liriano like performance it wouldn't be so bad. By that I mean a couple quality starts for every one or two clunkers. Gibson is showing us he can be effective some days and not so effective others. Nothing new here. Hendrik dominated every day in the minors. Meyer hasn't. I would still take Meyer's chances in the bigs. Levi Michael is maybe re- ermerging as a prospect and Polanco is continuing to emerge. Really tired of hearing injuries that are not considered serious because they almost always seem to end up that way.
  23. I like versatility but trying to make so many players be interchangeable parts doesn't really make sense to me. Used to be everyone knew their position and a guy like Al Newman would be the utility guy. Now it seems they are trying to make everyone capable of playing multiple positions and it just seems counterproductive. Why is it a good thing have the ability to play several positions when it seems to equate to not playing any particularly well. Plouffe is just now appearing to be competent at 3rd base. I am guessing he would still be a defensive mess if trotted out at other positions.
  24. Wasn't at the game and don't know the order of things but 5 errors and several misplays can turn 4 innings of work into a lot more. Focus on the 2 earned runs part of it.
