  1. 8 quality starts in his last 11. ERA went from 5.6 to 3.55 and he went 6-0 in that time frame. Has anyone every been less deserving of a demotion than he was?
  2. When I said promote Hicks I meant to the Twins. I just have a hard time believing they let Fuld go and not replace his defense. If promoted to the Twins there will be posters who complain about it because he has not succeeded there in the past. Personally, I liked him up there and while his average was terrible OBP is king for me and his was very good for a #9 hitter.
  3. Milone's resume and numbers only look mediocre on the very best staff's. On most teams they would look very solid. 8 quality starts and 6-0 in his last 11 starts.
  4. If you have built from trades of your existing players and from your farm system then you have "built from within". Milone at 3.8 ERA in the American league has a better career resume than Nolasco, much less Pelfrey and Correia. 3.8 AL ERA for career and 3.55 ERA this year do not make him median or a 4th or 5th starter. If he even gives us his career ERA it is at minimum solid 3. It would put him around 55 among starters in all of baseball which consist of 30 teams so you can do the math. Plus we know his ERA as an AL pitcher puts him above similar or better NL ERA's. If May and Meyer pan out to be 4 ERA or better guys this could be more than just a solid rotation.
  5. The main defense I have had for Pino and Johnson being promoted over Meyer has been simple performance. They gave up fewer earned runs per 9 than did Meyer. Their age should not be held against them. They simply earned the promotion. If Darnell had been promoted earlier that would also have been defensible but his ERA is worse than Meyer's now and trending upward whereas Meyer's ERA has been trending downward. The Darnell promotion over Meyer was not defendable. Only reason May wasn't the 2nd after Pino to be promoted should have been the injury.
  6. "And the arguments against the other starters was merely to discredit the alleged evidence used to justify those other starter promotions. The main point remains, those on the promote-Meyer side tend to agree that "what is best" for Meyer is pitching with the big league club, as he has nothing left to prove in the minors, and likely nothing more to gain" Where Pino is concerned in my book there is nothing alleged about it. Your argument was that Pino was promoted on the basis of 60 innings. My response is that not only did Pino outperform Meyer to the tune of 1.5 runs in ERA in that time frame, he also threw 130 innings in 2013 with a better ERA at AAA and AA than Meyer did in 70 innings of AA. Nothing alleged about those stats. You can talk peripherals all you want but 1.5 runs per 9 better is what it is. By the way, I am on the promote Meyer side but there is less chasing in the big leagues so how can he not gain in the minors by working on his walk rate? I am on the promote Meyer side and I believe they will very soon. He is now at the point where is performance compared to the others dictates he should be.
  7. It was 60 innings at the time and while you think WL record is meaningless the meaning to me is that he had the consistency to get at least 5 innings (2 complete games) in his starts and his ERA tells me that all or nearly all his starts were quality starts ( by Bert's definition). You also seem to be hung up on that 60 innings pitched this year. Last year Pino's ERA in AAA and AA was better than Meyers ERA in AA. Difference was that Pino threw 130 innings and Meyer threw 70 innings. Basically over a year and a half Pino has outperformed Meyer. If Meyer's talent is so overwhelming then his ERA should not be a run higher than a guy you think is a washed up journeyman minor league pitcher. This isn't to say I want Pino over Meyer. I am just saying the promotion of Pino was earned and defendable.
  8. I don't think he has pitched all that bad but I don't think he has a permanent rotation spot either. If his ERA goes up over 5 in his next start and it is quite likely that he will be the guy replaced by Meyer or May.
  9. Ok, I agree that WL record isn't terribly meaningful but it is not meaningless either. It means you held the other team on that day in those conditions to fewer runs than the other team's pitcher did. Its not terribly meaningful but he was 9-1!! Likewise ERA doesn't mean everything except his was 1.9!!! I agree with Seth. Meyer is obviously the better raw talent but then shouldn't all those strikeouts result in a better ERA than the 30 year old non prospect? If not, then he is not the obvious choice. Meyer was my choice for pitcher to click this year so I have been as anxious to see him as anyone but Pino was 9-1 with a 1.9 ERA. How can you give the Twins grief on one hand for the scholarship program and then criticize them for promoting a guy who has had that much success at that level? As far as May is concerned I don't think he was committed to anything by being named to that Futures game. I think he would have made his debut already if he had not gotten hurt.
  10. Of course the time to trade him was after his career year in 2012 but since he had just had his career year no one really wanted to part with him. I went into the offseason that year thinking it would be smart to trade him but then being pretty nonplussed to here what was allegedly being offered. The game winning home run was nice but compared to what hopefully will be either Santana, Hicks or Rosario his defense cost us more than a game this year. I like the guy but he just hasn't been worth it the last two years.
  11. 9-1 with a sub 2 ERA probably did involve some luck but still 9-1 with sub 2 ERA. Meyer with some dominating performances and great peripherals still had a run and a half higher ERA and a .500 record. Debatable means defendable. If Meyer had a 9-1 record with a 1.9 ERA we would not be having this discussion. Logan over Meyer is not as defendable.
  12. I would have been fine with May or Meyer being promoted earlier but can see justification in not. Pino simply performed better than Meyer and earned the promotion more. May earned it next but got hurt. Darnell would have made sense earlier but now it is not as justifiable to take him over Meyer. Very soon the rotation should be Hughes, Gibson, Meyer, May and either Pino or Correia. Meyer starting in the pen would also be acceptable.
  13. I am all for protecting arms but don't really believe there is any science to it. Skipping starts when there is some arm fatigue or soreness makes sense to me. Arbitrarily limiting innings for a season seems silly to me. If Blyleven, Morris or Maddux were 19 today in the minors they would be on innings limits and to what end? If Stewart or Meyer get to 100 innings do you shut them down? Is the belief that after a few months of rest and pitching 100 innings again that in 365 days they will be able to handle 25 more innings? Where is the science to that? Guys like Gibson Strasburg and Liriano are put on innings limits and end up needing surgery later just like the guys who are not "protected". I am all for protecting arms but the only form it really makes sense to me is the year after surgery. Some will not need surgery ever, innings limits or not. Some will need it regardless and why not do it sooner rather than later. Protecting arms never really seems like it protects arms.
  14. I have always defended these moves because in theory they make senses. Talented players who may have something left in the tank signed to low risk moderate reward deals. The low risk is that if they don't perform in ST or the minor leagues they never see the light of day in the majors. Upside is the talent and track record mentioned earlier. I will no longer defend these moves since the Twins do not follow this simple logic. They turn it into moderate risk due to lost games and blocking younger players and into low rewards since these guys have not had to prove that they are capable or ready to rebound. Twins are criticized often and I defend them often because I feel it is either unwarranted or just too over the top. Not here. Any signing of these types will now be met with skepticism on my part as well.
  15. Don't discount genetics. Griffey, Bonds, Fielder, Alou brothers, DiMaggio brothers, Perry brothers, Manning family. Don't know if nature trumps nurture but I don't know that it doesn't either.
  16. "guys who are barely worth rotation/roster spots on a bad team are rarely seen as worthy or a rotation/roster spot on a contending team." It happens though. Correia has a 4 ERA the past month. The only team that has no pitcher in their top 5 with an ERA north of 4 is Washington. Some have the 5th starter near 5. Justin Verlander has an ERA of 4.84. Maybe we can work out a trade. I wouldn't expect to get a lot for him but I imagine there are contending teams that would be interested. For the 87 WS champion Twins he would have been much better than the 4th and below starters. 4 might be the league average but it is made up of a lot of 5's to offset the 3's.
  17. "Aaron Hicks proves he's a AA baseball player" How so? That one needed a little flesh.
  18. The idea behind trading any asset is that you get at least as much value as you give up and trading with contending teams the idea is that you get more in return than you give up. I don't know how to assess the return value of Perkins but it should be sufficient enough that they will have no regrets. In other words if we get a shortstop and reliever in return that help us compete in 2016 I'm not going to complain that we don't also still have the reliever that got those pieces. Perkins should certainly get us more than a guy like Ramos. Capps wasn't as good as Perkins and was not under control for as long.
  19. Throw in either Hicks or Rosario in left and it doesn't matter where the fly balls go as long as they are inside the park.
  20. It will not be easy to trade Suzuki when considering the amount we will need to pay to keep him here. He is having a career year. He is a solid guy but there is a reason we got him for 2 mil. He is a .255 career hitter. As tough as he looks and probably is he is not a superstar defensive catcher either.
  21. I love having a knuckler on staff. I remember the early to mid 2000's. It just seemed like we would be on a roll, a knuckler would come to town, shut us down and wreck the timing for the next two games.
  22. "To be fair, Miguel Sano had 16 homers with the Miracle last night" Guessing that is a single game record.
  23. Essentially the Twins and the fans need to look at Suzuki as a .250 hitter with ok defense. Its easy to say you would still like him but have the Twins extend his contract for 16 mil and then see him fail in a half dozen situations where he succeeded in the first half and then get back to me.
