  1. 1. I'm not going to say that IP is a stand alone stat but I think it's a darn good stat. I personally like WHIP the best but those dang home runs keep that from being a stand alone stat. 2. There are exceptions to every rule. You will find some clunkers. With WHIP its Minor, Edwin Jackson and Derek Holland. 3. I would take all 4 of those pitchers you list in a heartbeat. I'd take the 3 WHIP clunkers that I listed in a heartbeat as well. 4. Comparing those pitchers to Strasburg is like comparing a Ford Focus to a Mercedes. The Ford is a great car but everyone is gonna take the Mercedes... Even drjim I assume. Strasburg may have the best arm to hit the scene in decades. Now compare those 4 pitchers to McCarthy and the discussion is interesting. I just feel IP is an important stat but like any important stat... It's a moving target. James Shields may have tossed 227 innings in 2012. It doesn't mean he won't throw only 84 innings in 2013.
  2. I read the original post and thought to myself that a list like Frodaddy put together would shoot that theory down. All in All... I haven't spent anytime researching it but I've looked at enough drafts to realize that the amount of early round busts from team to team... Year to year is large enough to stop a team of oxen in their tracks. This list by itself looks bad for our Twins so I just wanted to point out that this problem... most likely... wasn't exclusive to the Twins.
  3. For total fairness... A similiar list of draft choices should be compiled for the other 29 clubs... I just looked thru the Rangers... It didn't look very impressive either. I don't know for sure but Im guessing that all the teams will have a similiar list of busts or question marks.
  4. I get that and I don't disagree... You are right... Having a high IP does not prevent base runners or runs or produce a higher K rate... It is a by product of good pitching just like you say... But... Low ERA or WHIP is also a by product of good pitching in a similar way. Low ERA and WHIP... and IP are all stats that suggest that base runners and runs have been prevented. At least with IP you can add health and Manager confidence to the equation. Im not on mission to defend the hypothesis of drjim... I'm just saying that I can see where he is coming from. IP is not a meaningless or throw away stat. It has tremendous value in my mind both directly and indirectly.
  5. I'm not knocking the Twins minor or major league coaches... I wouldnt dream of it... I'm saying its possible that someone took a young Span and tried to make him do something he isn't comfortable with especially when youmconsider his unique no stride style and I'm pretty sure that every organization will take the wrong approach with someone along the way so no reason to knock the Twins. It happens and Span survived if it was the case. Who knows if its the case.
  6. Unless the team has absolutely no options or the manager is insane. IP will tell you that a pitcher is decent because if he's not... He won't be given any more innings to throw. Yes there are a ton of different variables to that... it's not cut and dried but nothing really ever is... In a very simple way... IP is a good measure to cut thru a lot of bull and determine if a pitcher has been healthy and at least somewhat effective. If he ain't healthy and he ain't effective... It will show up in IP. I kinda agree with the point that drjim is making. At least the point that I think he is making.
  7. A hitting coach can help you and a hitting coach can hurt you and a hitting coach can have little to no influence at all. I have no idea if Span's swing was over tinkered or under tinkered. I will say this... Not many baseball players use the no-stride swing that Denard Span has and he uses the it very well. This makes him a bit of an oddity and hopefully all of our instructors understood this and worked with it... Instead of a cookie cutter approach. I have no idea how Span was handled even after reading the articles but I assume that the Twins and every organazation have made mistakes over the years in player development.
  8. Glunn... You are in my group. I'm getting Shirts made and everything.
  9. No stride Span. It works for him. Sounds like he must have been no striding walking into the system... I could see a coach saying "what'd you doing? No no no... lets start from the basics and rework this swing". I can see a kid like Span listening to the coach and getting screwed up in the process.
  10. LOL... The Neil bit was obvious and all but... But shouldn't we really be discussing Scott Diamonds Testicles?
  11. I hate to break this to you... But... Anyone who sings the song "You Don't bring me Flowers"... It's pretty clear... Does not have Testicles... The lower range of his vocals only give the illusion of testicles. Check under his pants... They ain't there. BTW... I checked under Barbara Streisand's pants... She didn't have any either. I rest my case!
  12. Typically on Pitch... He struggles with the High C.
  13. Snooze you loose... I really wanted to be the guy who brought up Neil Diamond... I can't step away from this site for a second.
  14. Fans will just shorten it to A.S.P.K.R. Then people will end up calling your band Asp-ker. It would be an inevitable unfortunate progression that you couldn't stop once the train got rolling. Call your next Rock Band... "Bandwith Problems"
  15. Ron Gardenhire needs 68 wins to reach 1,000 for his career. If he doesn't reach 68 this year. He won't be around to make it in 2014. Gardy will make it this year... Plus 10... 78 is my guess.
  16. He's gotta hit in the majors... He certainly did it in AAA... It's his time... Right here... Right now... I hope he is confident and dialed in... I think he will be... I really think Parmelee and Plouffe will increase our Power output this year. Maybe 50 dingers between them. Is it April yet!!! Let's Go!!!
  17. Personally... I'd be more interested in Eliot Johnson. All IF positions plus outfield... Can steal a base and hit an occasional dinger. Ill be curious to see if the Twins go someplace with Johnson or Brignac.
  18. I think Theologian in you may be right on the prayer. I remember as a boy kneeling before bedtime praying for Bombo Rivera and Danny Goodwin greatness and a victory over the White Sox tomorrow and the late 70's didn't go so well. I'd say the prayer and my Mom would wait for me to finish. She would tuck me in and tell me the prayer was nice but it would have been a good idea to mention Uncle Joe and his surgery on Friday. On Karma... I think I'm on to something... I think we got a bad dose of Nishioka Karma that spilled on to everyone. Its been nothing but injuries and bad pitching since he came to town.
  19. I agree... Put him in the 2 hole... His approach is wrong for the #3... Perfect for the #2... Problem solved.
  20. In that specific area... I need to ask you a couple of questions. Is it possible that Twins Fans can out pray the Indians, Royals, Tigers and White Sox Fans? Would that be good for some W's? Also, is it possible that Nishioka did something real bad, evil, horrible and the Twins team and Twins Fans have been effected by that possible Heavenly Karma? I chose Nishioka for the example because he's the only player I can think of that was on the Roster for both of the bad years of 2011 and 2012 but not on the roster for the playoff year of 2010. If you think about it... This could all be Nishioka's fault karma wise. He wasn't rostered when we were good. The bad times came with him. Maybe the bad times followed him out the door. Something to think about!!!
  21. Can't say that I'm blown away. In this particular area... I can't even say I've been "Zephyred" away. Its like Tommy Boy in a boat with his date while Jokin and his friends stand on the shore hurling insults.
  22. Shane blogged about Colabello... What a great story... In the end I'm ok with starting Florimon... But we have to have someone who can replace him at the plate late in games.
  23. Clement has failed thus far... There is nothing to suggest he won't continue failing.... However... He can park it and we don't have a bat off the bench who can. Thrylos... You gotta a real good grip on the farm... I respect your opinion... Do we have anyone else ready for a power bench bat role?
  24. Instead of Scotty Pods... And I've always been a fan of his when he wasn't with the White Sox... Instead of Pods... I'd rather the Twins picked up someone who can jack one. If Florimon is gonna start and it looks like he is. Someone has to be available on the bench to hit for him when we are down in the ninth. I don't see that guy right now... Mastro... Ain't it... Carroll ain't it... I like Mastro and Carroll but they are not a late inning type. Is this how someone like Clement gets in the door? Carlos Lee would be a consideration if he came cheap. If Clement comes in for this role... He would take Butera's spot most likely.
