  1. Terry Ryan.... you just cleared $7M in "cap space" You can probably find a decent CF for that figure
  2. I was hoping that Bonnes was just speculating, but a quick look at MLBtraderumors confirmed the Pelfrey kick in the nuts, after we just suffered the Santana sucker punch in the face.
  3. Adding Ervin Santana in July is just like making a big trade at the trading deadline.
  4. What in the Twins recent history would lead us to believe that those prospects will be called up when "ready" (I use "ready" because the Twins seem to have way more criteria for a prospect being ready). Buxton is probably the only person you've listed that isn't blocked by someone who "Competes every night", "is good at controlling the zone", or has "years of experience to lean on" Injuries happen, but without injuries, I consider almost every one of those players to be blocked. Well.... Twins-blocked
  5. "Those two guys haven't even had a year of pro ball." AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  6. I haven't listened to the episode yet, but this is where I was hoping to find this discussion. I wanted ONE..... all I needed was ONE out-of-the-(Twins typical)-box choice for the 25 man roster. Meyer... Rosario.... Burdi..... Sano.... Heck, I might have even settled for May. But, no, I got the same uninspiring choices.
  7. That was the writers reaction to the contract, not my reaction to the article. "It was fine.... I suppose" "It wasn't too bad.... I guess" "None of these examples are very good comparisons, but I'll put them up here because that's what my editor expects. I can't draw any conclusions from them, though"
  8. The writer could have saved himself a lot of time and just typed "YAAAAAAAWN" and submitted that to his editor.
  9. In the case of "Age 31 Brian Dozier" he might turn down your QO, not because he's worth more than the 1-year dollar value of that offer, but because he's looking for one more guaranteed payday (say 4 years, $40M). And if you are the Twins, you might not pick up the option because you have other in-house options that you feel will perform near the same level at a much lower cost, but at the same time you think that he will turn down your qualifying offer because he wants a multi-year contract. I get that these are all hypotheticals, but I think that's a scenario that is more likely than you are considering it to be.
  10. I think it would be obvious what we are doing, but also smart, and hardy a sham. This is all moot, in this case, because there isn't an option year, I was just trying to understand the system more clearly. For the sake of argument, if you couldn't do a QO if you turn down an option, that would be a very good reason not to offer a (team) option year.
  11. Right, but can will still make that $15M offer if we turn down an option year?
  12. If we turn down an option year, does that remove the opportunity for us to get draft pick compensation should he leave in free agency?
  13. In the original two scenarios, it was the exact same ERA (3.86)
  14. I know this turned a bit silly, but underlying the silliness is a serious question.... Would you rather have a guy that gives you an ok chance every time he takes the mound or a guy like Kyle Gibson, who is lights out in 45% of his starts (0-1ER, 7+ IP), so-so in 20% of his starts (2-4ER, 6+ IP), and bad in 35% of his starts (5+ ER) Edited to add: And all this with a truly terrible defense
  15. Wrong... I'd have him pitch the next two innings and have him give up negative 4 runs those innings
  16. I'm preparing myself for Pelfrey. And, honestly, I'm OK with it. He's got a month. Sink or swim. If he sinks, then we cut him and the Pelfrey era is over. If he swims, then we have a little value.
  17. Would you rather have a guy that: a) in half his starts goes 8ip with 1 run and the other half 6ip with 5 runs or b.) in every start goes 7ip with 3 runs
  18. I would love him to be up with the club right away, but this isn't Minor League pitcher Alex Meyer being promoted to the Major League Club. This is Rochester Red Wing Alex Meyer being promoted to the Minnesota Twins. The combination of Twins talking points, Twins history, and the existence of highly paid options that need to play out the string on their usefulness (in the eyes of management), leads me to believe that there is almost a 0% chance he comes north from Ft Myers I feel like the order of "preference" from management for the 5th starter spot, at the beginning of the year is: Pelfrey Milone May Meyer Staufer
  19. I'm not going to quibble with the Twins not promoting Meyer last year. He was dinged up in 2013 and was certainly on an innings limit in 2014. I can't see a scenario (even a rash of injuries or complete dominance from Meyer) where the Twins burn a year of Arb, or Super 2, or whatever, by having him up on opening day. They have too many "adequate" stopgaps without the arbitration concern hanging over them. If the Twins make it past mid-June without having Meyer on the 25 man roster, in my opinion, the person making that decision, is doing a severe disservice to this organization.
  20. AAA / First Full MLB Year (year) / 2014 Hernandez 4.9 / 2.8 (2006) / 1.8 Price 4.6 / 3.8 (2009) / 1.7 Lester 4.3 / 2.8 (2008) / 2.0 Samardzija 4.2 / 2.9 (2012) / 1.8 Ventura 3.9 / 3.4 (2014) / same Kershaw (no AAA but AA was 3.9 in 16 starts) / 4.3 (2008) / 1.4 Kluber 3.9 / 2.0 (2013) / 1.9 Scherzer 3.7 (4.9 in AA) / 3.3 (2009) / 2.6
  21. Alex Meyer 2014 - 4.42 BB/9
  22. No kidding. Those first few months in Chattanooga are going to be awesome.
  23. 1. Fast Start 2. Nolasco 4.00 ERA 3. Highly successful promotions (Meyer, Sano, Buxton, Berrios?) 4. Arcia and Vargas, 25HR each
  24. What were pre-arbitration salaries back in the early 2000s?
