  1. I've got as much confidence in Mauer's hitting abilities as anyone, but even I know that he's likely to decline in his late-50's or so. Never's a pretty long time. Haha. I do agree, though: Mauer would be my choice.
  2. You're going a little over the top with these "implications" you have me making. It's nothing so sinister. All I was doing was calling attention to the fact that Liriano has repeatedly shown an ability to dominate, which I believe you're unlikely to find among other pitchers available on cheap-ish one-year deals in this market. This is a guy who was a Game 1 postseason starter two years ago. You admit that your frustration with him is tied up in emotion, and that's sort of my point. I believe that his struggles overshadow his strengths in the minds of many fans who have watched it all unfold. As Pseudo pointed out, he's the kind of upside play that the vast majority of people would be on board with if they hadn't experienced his downside up close over these last few years. I wasn't criticizing the viewpoint that he shouldn't be brought back so much as the viewpoints that he's terrible and useless. It's odd to me that you would continue to push this (proven) false narrative six months later but hey, whatever floats your boat dude. WHAT?!?! Leviathian misrepresenting something someone said so he could argue against the fictional, non-existent point??? Jokin exaggerating/lying to go on a negative rant for some unknown purpose??? Huh...must be a day that ends in 'y'...again.
  3. This is my view EXACTLY. I would love to see that. He would pull more homers and hit 50 doubles by going the other way. It is VERY smart for the Red Sox to try that. Sorry, guys. Apparently you haven't heard. You see, because he's hitting the ball to the opposite field, he necessarily hits it softly. He probably couldn't even reach The Monster most of the time. (OK, now how do you turn off the "sarcasm font?")
  4. The first sentence of the original article amused me. After reading the article, it was funny. And after reading the comments, it's just hilarious.
  5. Oh, and he doesn't have to close his glove at just the right time? Hmmmm???? C'mon, man, you're smarter than that!
  6. From what Joe C wrote, it sounds like the issue was more in the option year that the Twins wanted and Baker was hard set against than the dollars. That may or may not change the resulting feelings, but the piddly amount of money doesn't seem like the culprit (especially since the incentives the Twins were offering made it possibly a larger contract dollar-wise).
  7. They get him and they get VMart back. Add that to the fact that they underachieved in the first half this past season based on their talent. Should win 100 games this year I'll take the under. maybe...but I don't think there's a team in our division that comes close to matching their talent Agreed. And I wasn't even claiming they couldn't win 100. Not sure they should, though, and I'd wager the under is more likely.
  8. Carl Pohlad owned the Twins when there was talk of contraction, and I'm fairly confident he has very little input on decisions anymore. Also, if we're going to get all drooly over Ilitch, it should probably be pointed out that the Twins have finished ahead of the Tigers in 14 of the 21 seasons they've shared a division (all under Ilitch's ownership). The Twins have also won their shared division 6 times compared to 2 for the Tigers. There's also that the Tigers didn't contend a single time for the first 14 years of Ilitch's ownership, and only got over 0.500 once in that span (his second season).
  9. They get him and they get VMart back. Add that to the fact that they underachieved in the first half this past season based on their talent. Should win 100 games this year I'll take the under.
  10. I have very little idea how good the players the Jays sent the Marlins are, but as I was reading this thread I was asking myself this same question. And it's not even a matter of different posters taking up different extreme sides as there are cases of the same poster making both claims. (That the deal was ridiculous and awful by the Marlins AND that the Twins were wise not to be on the other end of it). I don't get that.
  11. I read it as meaning "bad news" from Plouffe's standpoint (in that his job isn't necessarily safe).
  12. Calm down brother...it was meant as hyperbole. So what we're left with is that you wanted to come here and put stink on Gardenhire for an imagined and invented mis-use of a theoretical 2013 Capps by using an exaggerated (one could say BS instead) accusation of mis-use of a past player ( when that was more accurately probably the best player available to be used in the role in question)? Am I calm enough to have that about right?
  13. according to hardy............. that is not a rumor. that comes from hardy. According to the same Hardy that gave credit to Vavra and his approach of going with the pitch for turning him around and helping him greatly? That same one?
  14. If you get Showtime and have Comcast, you can go back and watch all of "Homeland" from the beginning On Demand. It's fantastic. I believe there were 10-12 episodes in season 1 and the 5th episode of Season 2 just aired on Sunday.
  15. you hit that out of the park , perfectly said Except Punto's had 500 AB's in a season exactly ZERO times. He's hit 500 PA's only twice. In one of those years he put up a 290/352/373. Were you sad about not getting more time for Tony Batista that year? Or was it someone else you just had to have on the field to feel good? The following year he got to 500 PA's again and was pretty bad at the plate....and I'm still not sure who on that roster you were wanting to play instead. I promise you it's possible to be snarky and negative without telling lies. Although you might have to think a tad more, that's not the worst thing in the world.
  16. Exceptions to the Rule for $800, Alex. Who is Adam Dunn? Is there a record for difference in OPS and BA? Dunn has to be in the running. Remarkable, really.
  17. Apparently he had something going on with his vision where he was having trouble seeing the baseball to the point that he was flinching noticeably even trying to catch soft tosses back to the mound from the catcher/umpire. I'll go ahead and put that near the top of strange events list.
  18. WPA/LI (also on fangraphs) tries to get at what people are looking for with an attempt to "rate" the stat by opportunity.
  19. This post says nothing about Nick Blackburn, but screams volumes about the writer.
  20. I can't say as though I'm that familiar with St. Paul. I hardly ever get out to the Eastern suburbs. HA! That's a good one. I'll have to tell my friends from the west side of the river so they can use it when I'm sarcastically pointing out that St. Paul is the capital.
  21. I saw this comment today at work and thought it had to be a mistake. I checked the pitch-by-pitch on ESPN and that agreed. That was a fairly historic happening! Best I can tell, Mauer has swung at a 3-0 pitch 5 previous times in his big league career and today was the first time since 2009!!!!! Holy cow!!! I'm gonna watch the dvr recording of the game just to see it happen.
  22. Nick Punto's batting average with the Twins was .248. His OBP .323. Which are all of one point off his career numbers. As an aside, Alexi Casilla's career batting average is .248. His OBP is .303.
  23. I heard that on the radio as I was driving back to work at lunch today. I thought to myself, I bet some...ummm...person...is going to take that literally and be all up in arms about Span making a self-deprecating joke. Then I thought, "Nah...nobody would go that far." Then I thought, "I spend too much time reading comments from people on the interwebs when I react to their theoretical reactions."
  24. Just because I'm that guy...their difference in Picked Off + Caught Stealing is 1. Over 150 games. And in Span's favor.
  25. Because of variance and the fact that not everything that is measured has the same amount of it. What we are trying to measure with a defensive metric is essentially "how likely is a player to make a certain type of play." Is it 70%, 90%, 99.4%...? Well the recorded measurements are only "Did he make a given play or didn't he?" He never makes 70% of the play. There is variance in the observed measurement. Throw in that on the defensive side, most plays are "routine" and the number of games needed to get a reliable estimate is large. Nobody (reasonable) claims that the data accumulated in smaller samples isn't true. They simply say/know/claim that the amount of data to get a reliable estimate is larger than the amount of data that they have. As an analogy that may make more sense, if we are trying to find the average height of men in St. Paul and we measure one fellow at 6'1". We don't discount that he is actually 6'3", but we also don't know yet if the average height of men in St. Paul is 6'1". We will keep measuring other men to deal with the fact that there is variation. The more measurements we gather, the more accurate our estimate can become. None of our men have the "wrong" height, but none of their individual heights is the answer we are looking for. I don't know if that explanation makes things more clear or less.
