  1. Disagreement between those two versions of the metric is common. Neither is very good. Close to half of Mauer's PAs are as a DH or 1B, obviously not valued as highly a position as C. Besides that, he has hit extraordinarily better as a C (BA .361/OPS .951) than at the other two positions, where his numbers are just slightly above average for the position (BA .286/OPS .800). It appears that BA does account for this in its positional weighting, while Fangraphs doesn't properly take this into account. Actually looks like the difference is much more the result of the defensive performance and not the offense at all.
  2. While I understand your sentiment, the Twins aren't nearly that bad off. Parmelee is already in Minnesota. Gibson, Hicks, and Arcia will probably make appearances in 2013. And where has Ryan said he's not going to make changes? Ryan has stated that the Twins will [explore every avenue of improving the team, including] free agency... Sounds like [he's willing to make] changes to me. Accurated up your post with the bold in brackets.
  3. Where do you find them? I've not had one yet.
  4. Also interesting that there is a fair amount of disagreement between Fangraphs and Baseball Reference for several Twins, including Mauer and Span that I've noticed. There may be others as well.
  5. Things I find amazing: That the analytical folks who come up with formulas for things like WAR somehow decided to only count home games (or is it only away games? Or is it that one should count differently than the other?). That those same folks think they should measure results of plate appearances rather than the alleged thought processes and worries in a player's mind while at the plate. That despite the constant attention and coverage and devotion to recording virtually every single thing that happens in every single baseball game that nobody has thought to record players getting picked off on the base paths. OR That someone can apparently think those things are actually true.
  6. The biggest advantage of using an online service rather than a street broker at the game is that you can see everything available and customize a search to what you're looking for (# of tickets, price range you want to look at, sections, etc). On the street, you're rather at the mercy of the individual you're talking to, what he has available, and what he tells you is the "best price." Online (I've used Stubhub a lot, but I'm sure there are others that are similar) you can just get a lot more information and that's to your advantage.
  7. ---I looked it up. 5 seasons. 39-35 overall record. 2 playoff appearances. 1-2 playoff record. Sorry, not seeing the basis for the claim that it is a fact that these teams were "as a whole were more successful that Gardy's teams...". Were you expecting anything else when you consider the source?
  8. Hard for me to think it, let alone type it out in public...but I actually prefer the White Sox to the current incarnation of the Tigers. Don't get me wrong, it's like preferring a headache to an earache, but still.
  9. The Twins page on ESPN has the Elias note that this wasn't the first time Morneau has had a multi-homer game that included one of them being a walk off. In fact it was his THIRD time! That seemed like a pretty rare event and I was quite surprised anyone had done it that often. Turns out, David Ortiz and Todd Helton have also done it three times each. Amazing.
  10. Do we have any idea about the size of the "closer incentives" in the Perkins contract? I've been wondering about that ever since it was signed, but haven't been able to find it anywhere. Do we even know kind of sort of? We talking hundreds of thousands or millions or doubling the base or what? Anyone?
  11. Wow. I'm kind of shocked it's even that many.
  12. You've been killing it lately, Riverbrian! Well said and nice work.
  13. Yes, it does. And that's where Mauer needs to do some repair work. I think 2011 hurt him tremendously. We heard/read rumors about players elsewhere questioning his "toughness". He seemingly wanted (and got) special treatment -- I still don't know why he did not spend a single day of his rehab in Rochester. Not to mention the whole mysterious "bi-lateral leg weakness" (the Twins & their P.R. staff probably did him a huge disservice there). "In here, we know how hurt he was last year and how hard he worked to get back out there." That's a quote about Joe Mauer from Justin Morneau from earlier this season. I sure hope rumors and a doctor who fancied up a phrasing wouldn't matter one iota in a HoF voter's mind. I'd put a lot more stock in the comments from a teammate and actual performance, and I would hope they would, too.
  14. Well...details and the super remote possibility that someone else may have a different personal taste or opinion. Can you point to the part where I stated or implied something different? Do you have a take on "the Mauer vs Puckett Comparison" or did you just drop by to, yet again, take potshots at other posters? Just the post I quoted where it seems pretty implied to me with your "case closed" style. As for the debate at hand, I got to know Puck casually a little bit after he retired. Enough to make it fairly hard to be objective. So I'll keep my take to myself on this one and leave my contribution (for now) at pointing out that your dismissing other people's thoughts as mere details doesn't make it so. I don't like being dismissed, so I don't mind standing up for those that are sometimes, or even often.
  15. Man, I loved the original RBI. Versions II and III were not nearly as good to me. Was it the lack of the short, round men? The skinny bats instead of the big ones from the original? I don't know. In college, a bunch of us played quite a bit. We would always randomize which team you played with (no All-Star teams allowed) and always play a 3-game series so that you could only use one starting pitcher in a game (unless you wanted to go the next game with none as the game wouldn't let you use the same guy back-to-back without a reset). There were times when all eight teams were my favorite, and also times where I didn't like to play with each of them. I could go on and on about that game. I haven't probably played in 15 years, but I STILL hum the music fairly often when I'm doing something mindless and repetitive like yardwork or what have you.
  16. Baseball Reference has Span getting picked off 4 times in 2011. Revere 6. Revere had about 1.5 times as many opportunities. Not sure if those are accurate. I think Span's pickoffs happened in a bunch that made them stand out more. For the record, this year Revere "leads" 4 pickoffs to 3 (while also stealing more than twice as many and getting caught only about the same).
  17. Well...details and the super remote possibility that someone else may have a different personal taste or opinion.
  18. Not sure how you would find the footage of the game from just after when Smalley (who was in the booth instead of Blyleven) talked about it. He started by pointing out that it was so subtle that most people had probably missed it and just went on chuckling about how it was a very Mauer moment. The phrase I liked was when he appreciatively noted how he (Mauer) is "just good at 'stuff'." Was a fun moment.
  19. Harper played more than he had in any of his previous 8 seasons the first year he arrived, full time from the year after that, and immediately after he left here he went back to not playing nearly as much as he had here.
  20. I'm curious how you make that connection. And to avoid any accusations of snippiness, I really just don't think I get where you went with that, I'm not implying it's dumb or wrong or anything.
  21. Span has been caught stealing or picked off a total of 8 times this year. Gomez 7. While Span has an extra 128 plate appearances (and 16 fewer stolen base attempts). Span has a .048 advantage in OBP.
  22. Gosh I hope you were watching the game at the time you posted that.
  23. Of course you "forgot" this (from 1500 ESPN, but I'm fairly certain it was elsewhere, as well). Starting to feel like Groundhog Day. Bolding is mine. ... Manager Ron Gardenhire and pitching coach Rick Anderson wanted Baker to cut it loose, provided he was healthy enough to be on the mound. In retrospect, it's clear now why Baker was unable to ramp up into the 90's, but when asked if there were any hard feelings between he and the coaching staff Baker said, "None whatsoever." "Nobody knows what's going on," he added. "Nobody knows what's going on until you get in there. I didn't know, doctors don't know. The doctors don't know until they get in there. I mean, they can have an indication from an MRI, but what can you do until you get in there? ... "To be honest with you, you're not always completely forthright with the staff."
  24. Just an apparently opaque attempt to say, "Nice job."
  25. I was hoping your first response (saying it was surprising that the formula didn't take that into account) was kind of sarcastic . Maybe it was. That you have had to go back to it because it didn't sink in is kind of amusing to me. And kind of sad. I'm not really surprised that presenting actual facts has been virtually unacknowledged, though.
