  1. Dozier isn't even worthy of holding Casilla's jockstrap considering his numbers so far this year, and I'm no Casilla fan. With that said, I do agree that there is nothing left to evaluate concerning him at the AAA level. Question is, how long is this rope? He's at around 500 major league at bats and they haven't been pretty.
  2. What is he, T. Ryan, going to do about it? What are you suggesting? What if the streak does reach 12 or 15 or 18 games? I'll tell you what he's done about it during the first 9. He sent down Hernandez and Worley and he called up Deduno and Walters. I'll tell you what he did about it over the offseason. He changed out 4/5's of the rotation and managed to make it WORSE! What will he do at 12? I dunno, perhaps call up Gibson? Will that help? Not sure. I'll tell you what we won't see and shouldn't see. We won't and shouldn't see anybody currently playing in Fort Myers anytime this season. We won't and shouldn't see anybody playing in New Britain prior to September.
  3. I like your confidence in the 2016 team, but wonder if it isn't a bit misguided. Alot of decisions will have to be made between now and then to fill out a successful 25 man roster. Also, the reality is, most teams rely on more like 3--35 players to get through a season. I'm not certain I see this organization making the right decisions to round out the roster over the next 4 years.
  4. Seth, I appreciate your insight and your certainly closer and more informed when it comes to management than most on this site. I'd like to have confidence levels that high, but it's becoming more and more difficult for me over time. Name me the last starting pitcher developed by this organization who has had a sustained run of success for the Twins? I have very little confidence in this organizations ability to develop pitching at this point.
  5. Purely based on all the positive reviews/comments about his effectiveness with our minor leaguers over the past two years. I agree, those results aren't showing up for the Twins so far this season.
  6. So your confident Gardy and Anderson won't hurt and will most likely help our pitching prospects such as Gibson, Meyer, and May? I wish I had that confidence. I'm much more confident in our minor league hitters fulfilling their promise, especially with Bruno as the batting coach.
  7. I consider 88 wins a successful season. It may or may not get you a division championship depending on the year. It may or may not get you into the playoffs. It got the Twins into the playoffs in '87 and from their we all know the outcome. What percent confident are you in the following management to do their part to get the Twins to 88 wins by the end of the 2016 season? Ryan? Gardenhire? Anderson? I'd put my current confidence levels in those people at: Ryan 50% Gardenhire 20% Anderson 10% At the end of last season I would've put those confidence levels at: Ryan 80% Gardenhire 40% Anderson 30% I've lost alot of confidence over the off-season and the first six weeks of the season.
  8. You beat me to it Snepp, couldn't agree more. Our starters are facing their best batters and not throwing as many secondary pitches/off speed stuff as they try to establish and keep the pitch count down. Also, by the fifth these same pitchers are facing these same batters third time through and the batters have seen everything they have to offer which is, unfortunately in our case, not much.
  9. What are Andy's methods? As I recall, back when the Twins were decent he was known as a guy who wanted pitchers to throw strikes and avoid walks. It sure seems like the Twins as an organization are turning from that philosophy, albeit slowly. Also, it seems most pitchers who have credited someone in the organization for assistance or a turnaround have credited Cuellar, not Andy. Is it a coincidence that Cuellar is in the big league clubhouse this season?
  10. I don't know which 9 games your talking about and I'm not a Gardy apologist so I'm not necessarily arguing against your point. However, these starting pitchers have already put our bullpen in a big bind over the last two weeks with their far less than stellar performances. I'm just glad I can DVR the games and watch them on FF. It's embarrassing watching our SP's perform in comparison to those on other teams. They are constantly in 1-0, 2-0, 3-1, 3-2 counts. How many times have we seen our SP with a pitch count approaching 100 and nowhere near out of the 5th inning?
  11. What are the totals for Twins/Visitors at TF and Twins/home team away from TF? What site would have this info most readily available? I did just a bit of looking at stats on yahoo a few days ago and it seemed the Twins had scored more runs than their BA/OBP/Slugging would warrant. I do remember seeing a recent (within the past week?) graphic on tv suggesting the Twins were one of the best teams so far at hitting with men in scoring position. That seems a bit ironic to me because it just seems that each time I see the bases loaded the Twins hitters seem to crap out. Thanks in advance.
  12. I think we're all forgetting one major factor, economics! At the end of the day there are two and only two goals for any mlb franchise, winning the world series and attracting fans. This thread has focused mainly on whether Gibson deserves to be up based on the first goal, winning. I'd argue that the second goal, attracting fans, is even more important than the first. From that perspective, I think the Twins organization is very close to the need for change. Simply put, we as fans seen enough of Hernandez, Pelfrey, and Worley to make many of us less desirous of going to the ballpark, tuning in the radio, or turning on the tv. We, as fans, would like to see the continuation of the development of our future right here in Minnesota. It may soon very much be economically advantageous to have Kyle Gibson pitching for the Minnesota Twins.
  13. I'm no scout and I don't pretend to be one. But... When I watch Worley and Hernandez pitch my thought process is, "They don't have any stuff and I'm not seeing any results." I'm having a real hard time figuring out how Worley had such good results his rookie season for Philly. He's obviously not pitching the same way now. Also, I'm glad we traded Liriano because 1/2 of that trade return looks mlb viable at this point and it's not Pedro. When I watch Pelfrey pitch my thought process is, "He's got some stuff, but he's terribly inconsistent and there's no results." I can't wait for these three to be replaced by Gibson, Deduno, DeVries or whoever else. A frustrated Twins fan even more frustrated with what the FO/Ownership tell us is a starting rotation.
  14. Once again, the laws of economics rule. You get what you pay for. Period. End of story. Thank you Pohlads and Terry Ryan
  15. As far as the Twins philosophy and what they are teaching in the minors... In the Eastern League (12 teams) the New Britain staff is currently 7th in strikeouts and 8th in walks. In the Florida State League (12 teams) the Fort Myers Miracle staff is currently 11th in strikeouts and 1st in walks. In the Midwest League (16 teams) the Cedar Rapids Kernels staff is currently 6th in strikouts and 8th in walks. Not much one can glean from that data other than that the Fort Myers results most closely approximate what is going on with the Twins staff.
  16. I've enjoyed keeping up with our minor league affiliates this year. Our AA, A+, and A- clubs are having a great start to the year. So, I decided to compile some stats from Milb.com. Here you go, have fun: league ranks are in parenthesis: Eastern League (12 teams) New Britain Record 20-16 (3) Batting Runs 187 (1) Hits 327 (1) HR 24 (4) AVG 278 (1) OPS 765 (1) Pitching Runs 152 (3) ERA 3.95 (4) Hits 312 (11) HR 18 (2) SO 261 (7) BB 132 (8) WHIP 1.46 (10) Run differential +35 Florida State League 12 Teams Overall Fort Myers 27-8 (1) Batting Runs 194 (1) Hits 335 (2) HR 33 (1) AVG .285 (1) OPS .805 (1) Next highest club .757 Pitching Runs 135 (3) ERA 3.48 (4) Hits 288 (3) HR 21 (7) SO 233 (11) BB 66 (1) WHIP 1.15 (2) Run differential +59 Midwest League 16 teams overall Cedar Rapids 23-10 (1) Batting Runs 190 (1) Hits 284 (1) HR 27 (2) AVG .269 (3) OPS .790 (1) Pitching Runs 133 (5) ERA 3.44 (2) Hits 263 (9) HR 18 (10) SO 252 (6) BB 103 (8) WHIP 1.33 (5) Run differential +57 Comments?
  17. What I find really fascinating in all this talk about under slot/over slot etc. etc. etc. is that people are forgetting that after the top 3 in this draft the other players all basically come in waves of talent. In other words, the top three are the first wave, then there's the next level of talent which includes about a half dozen players, then the next level which is the mid-first rounders, etc. The reality is, many of these players (about half?) will flame out and never do anything meaningful at the major league level. It's practically impossible to tell who that will be at this point. We simply have no idea who will be the better major leaguer at this point, Manaea or Stewart or McGuire or whoever. Neither do the scouts or the front offices. The NFL draft is full of busts and it doesn't include high schoolers and non of those players have to spend years toiling in the minors before attempting to make an NFL team. The MLB draft is truly a crapshoot. So I guess what I'm saying in all this rambling is, as fans, we probably shouldn't get our undies in too much of a bunch when the Twins don't do what we expected them to do with pick 4. Finally, the fact that round 1 and 2 in the baseball draft produce more top end talent than ever before in it's history is duly noted thanks to other posters and other threads. And...what fun is being a fan if your undies aren't in a bunch so...go ahead and bunch!
  18. There's no reason for Stewart to go under slot at 4. He and his agent realize he most likely won't be around past 6. From a player's perspective, you take under slot money at 4 because you realize you'll probably go 8-10 but could fall into the mid teens. So, you take 8-10 slot money at 4 as insurance that you won't have to accept mid 1st round slot if you fall. So, getting back to Stewart. The only scenario in which Stewart should accept under slot is if he is being picked at 1 or 2 and getting 4 or 5 money to guarantee he won't have to take 6-8 money. Houston could do this at 1, Chicago won't do this with their #2. Houston doing this is about the only chance the Twins have at seeing one of the top 3 fall to 4.
  19. I'm enjoying re-engaging with Hockey and watching the Wild this season. I used to watch alot of Hockey growing up in North Dakota. I enjoyed the rivalry between UND and UM and also watching the North Stars. I left hockey when the North Stars left the state and briefly came back in the late 90's when they had a good run in Dallas for a few years. I haven't paid any attention to the Wild until this year, mostly because I didn't have satellite tv until a few years ago so had little access to Hockey on TV. So, my question. I've been reading some about the Wild on the Strib website which is almost exclusing Russo stuff. Are there any blogs out there for the Wild that would give me a more in-depth analysis of the team, the coach, and hockey philosophy? Any help Wild fans? Thanks!
  20. Seth, shouldn't the score of the CR game show CR 8, South Bend 4 in 9 innings?
  21. There have been "minor" leagues basically since the inception of baseball back in the mid 19th century. Often times, these minor leagues employed some of the best players in baseball who for various reasons chose not to play in the highest level league of competition. Also, don't forget that until the late 50's one of those "minor" leagues was the Negro League which definitely had some top notch talent playing baseball. Branch Rickey probably pioneered the affiliation of minor league clubs to big league clubs. Seth, the "Baseball America" of the first half of the 20th century was probably The Sporting News. I fondly remember my weekly subscription as a kid in the 70's. The main focus was the majors, but they also provided quite a bit of minor league coverage.
  22. Come on guys, when do we ever let fact get in the way of opinion around here? It's true, it certainly sucks to live in Minnesota right now and be a Twins fan. I'm glad I live in Iowa. Oops, it sucks to live in Iowa right now too!!!
  23. Let's bring this discussion back to baseball. Mustard or Ketchup with your dog?
  24. I'm just fine wth Gardy's seat being plenty warm right now. I thought he was the right man for the job back in '02. I think he does a good job with veterans who probably need managed the least. I don't think he's done a particularly good job with young guys since that first wave in '02 and I don't think he's done a particularly good job in the post-season. Is Gene Glynn an heir apparent? Would Molitor be the guy?
  25. I've got no problems with Target Field whatsoever. I've been there once to experience it's majesty. I was at the Metrodome on several occasions. I can live with indoor baseball. Target Field, however, is an "experience". Weather is going to happen, we either live through it or postpone. I'm okay with either, we'll still play 162 and 81 of them will be in a gorgeous ballpark.
