I know Joe Benson needs to learn how to command the strike zone better, but... oh wait, you say that isn't Joe Benson playing RF? It's who?... Clete Thomas? Who's he? And why is he playing so much when we have the likes of Joe Benson and Chris Parmelee? Disclaimer: I know, I know, Benson and Parmelee could both use more seasoning in AAA and both need to playing every day. I get it, I really do. GO TWINS! Go Clete Thomas!

I certainly don't consider Clete Thomas' production, 3/13 overall and 0/4 in his most recent start, "playing the hot hand". Clete Thomas has been described as nothing more than replacement level by most of the blogosphere since the Twins picked him up. So, what's the over/under on number of AB's between Thomas and Butera that is acceptable for the Twins at the end of the season? 250? 300? 400?

Any Chance Dozier Replaces ... Valencia?
silverslugger replied to John Bonnes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I DVR'd and watched the game this AM with the sound off. Had to let others in the household sleep. On the bunt play, my first thought was also what in the world was Casilla doing? While watching the replay I noticed that Casilla was shaded well toward 2b, basically double play position. He seemed to react right away and sprint toward first, however, it looked like he pulled up within about 10 feet of the bag when he realized he was going to get there about the same time as Jennings. Any throw to first would've been perilous at that point. Also, with a right handed pitcher on the mound falling toward first, I was wondering if it wouldn't have been better to keep Parmalee back in that instance??? Regardless, 4 miscues by Casilla in the game. He's got to step it up or I've got to believe we'll be seeing Dozier at SS with Carroll at 2b sometime in May. Carroll at 3b for Valencia? Not a solution. Time to light that fire by playing Burroughs more against righties. -
I'm not mad that Curtis Granderson hit a couple of homers off Anthony Swarzak on mistake pitches. Heck, I'm not mad that Curtis Granderson got a couple of singles, one of them a seeing eye infield dribbler after hitting 3 (count 'em 3!!!) home runs. I'm FURIOUS that Curtis Granderson was allowed to hit his 3rd home run off Jeff Gray without even so much as MOVING his feet in the batter's box. Is this on Gardy? Is this on the pitcher? Is this on Mauer? I go with Gardy. He's the skipper, set the tone, don't let the damn Yankees get away with being so comfortable at the plate. Come on Man!!!

The Clete Thomas signing was an excellent signing if he's used as a 4th outfielder and defensive replacement in late innings. Thus, it allowed the Twins to put Revere back in AAA to be an everyday player and continue to develop his skill set. However, if Gardy uses Clete Thomas as the everyday RF instead of giving at bats to Parmelee and Plouffe it's not a very good signing.

Article: MLB Payroll By The Numbers
silverslugger replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
slashing payroll that much in 2012 may well be the epitomy of pennywise and pound foolish, only time will tell. Ultimately, they could've and probably should've put a more expensive product on the field in an attempt to be competitive. The question is, will they be competitive enough this year to keep the fan base interested long enough to turn over the roster. Also, will those who help turn over the roster be more like our early 2000's roster or our mid 90's rosters? In many respects, 2012 will go a long way toward determining how "cozy" TargetField is for the rest of this decade. -
There seems to be lots of angst with the M and M boys right now. Flipping Morneau and Willingham in the order to create matchup issues later in games seems simple enough, even though Gardy won't do it. So, who should bat third in this lineup? If not Mauer, then who? If Mauer, then give your reasons. And remember, professional sports is all about "what have you done for me lately?" My pick? Span My batting order right now would be Carroll, Mauer, Span, Willingham, Morneau, Doumit, Parmelee, Valencia, Casilla

Game 8 - Twins vs Rangers - 4/14/12
silverslugger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Archived Game Threads
Cubs/Cards here in DSM, IA BTW, I hate MLB's blackout rules. Here in Iowa all six of the midwest teams are blacked out most of the time. I'm surprised Cubs/Cards is on as it would usually be NYY/Angels today here in Iowa. It's a travesty, but don't get me started. -
Game 8 - Twins vs Rangers - 4/14/12
silverslugger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Archived Game Threads
What happened to Blackburn? Game's not on FSN today so tuned in here to see what was happening. Clete Thomas? The only positive I see here is if it means Revere is back in Rochester learning his craft. -
I like Hughes, but he is going to have to bring more defense. I can see where it would be tough to be consistent defensively if your playing a middle infield position 1-2 times per week and not considered a "defensive" replacement. Obviously, he was in the lineup for his bat last night. Also, I did like seeing that lineup even though they only scored one run. I cringe when I see this lineup; 8) Revere 9) Casilla 1) Span 2) Carroll. That's way too many slap hitters in a row once you get past the first inning, if you count Span as a slap hitter. I'm not nearly as worried about Hughes' redundancy at this point as I am the waisting away of the "potential" of Ben Revere. As little as he has played the first 7 games, he should be down in Rochester manning CF every day, honing his craft, learning how to bunt, and gaining value, be it for the Twins or on the trade front. The threesome of Doumit, Plouffe, and Hughes are more than enough to cover our bench needs, both infield and out.

Gardy's bullpen management
silverslugger commented on silverslugger's blog entry in Blog silverslugger
Glen Perkins was used to get two high leverage outs in the first game when we were still in it and needed to keep the score close. Now, I didn't get to watch beyond the 4th inning of yesterday's game. I'm looking in the boxscores today and checking my fantasy league team when I see that Perk pitched an inning with two strikeouts. Can anyone explain? Anyone? Seriously, Ron Gardenhire! Seriously? -

HISTORY I'm a diehard Twins fan, been one since I was a kid growing up in Minnesota in the 70's. Living in Iowa my entire adult life, I've made it to a handful of Twins games all at the dome. I've listened intently to Herb Carneal and John Gordon on the radio for years. Within the last few years I've watched many a game on FSN. REALITY Last year I pretty much stopped watching the games on FSN in July and August, came back a bit in September just to eye a few of the young pups. If crap like yesterday continues, viewership in Twins Territory will wane and attendance at TargetField will drop like a rock, for reference see last September. I'd love to get to a game at Target Field, wish I would've in 2010, it just didn't happen. I'm much less inclined on a daily basis to experience it and much less inclined on a daily basis to tune into FSN or keep the radio on. If the Twins don't begin looking competitive soon, TwinsTerritory will cease to exist in it's glorious past decade form and revert to the cold and fridget 90's in a hurry.

I agree with John that they may have been able to take advantage of an inefficiency in the market over the past decade. If so, it's quite possible that said inefficiency doesn't exist anymore since in professional sports immitation is the highest form of flattery. They have attempted to draft power arms more recently and have had horrible luck as witnessed by a few of the minor league releases this spring. I have read or heard about how the Rays have done an excellent job of developing power arms and keeping those arms healthy. Anybody got any further information on their success and how the Twins might try to imitate the Rays success?

Historically, how often do trade occur in April and May? I certainly don't remember many in April. To me, if a team were going to trade to address a perceived need, it would've been during ST. I think most clubs are going to give their current roster 50 games or so to see where they are at before considering trades, unless the injury bug hits. Also, per Arizona, if they are giving at bats to Kubel over a more defensive outfielder then they are coming at it from the same philosophy as our Twins, so to speak.

I like Doumit on the team and like him as our backup catcher. I think the real question here isn't so much whether it should be Revere or Doumit in RF. Gardy has already come out and stated that if Doumit starts at a position other than C, then he stays in the game so we don't lose our backup. But rather, is Doumit's bat that much better than Plouffe's bat considering Plouffe with his range and arm could probably become that much better than Doumit defensively. Let's face it, both are learning to play RF on the fly while serving on an MLB roster. I'd rather have Plouffe doing the learning as my regular RF, not Doumit. Doumit is an asset, as our backup catcher who will catch 2-3 games per week. His bat isn't that much better than Plouffe, or Hughes for that matter.

Whose to blame? 2012 version 1.0
silverslugger commented on silverslugger's blog entry in Blog silverslugger
Lots of hand-wringing over a not-so-inspiring Game 1. Also, lots of opinions about who should get how much blame, most of it centered on either Pavano or the hitters. Well, now that the spring training kool-aid fest has worn off my question is, "whose to blame"? Let's face it Twins fans, Vegas has us as over/under 73 wins for a reason. We didn't get much love from national pundits and magazines for a reason. I'd like to think we could take second place and give the Tigers a run for their money. However, I'm not much inspired by the pitching staff, especially the starters. So, "whose to blame"? A) Ownership for not committing enough resources to this team in just it's third year in what has been described as a cash-cow ballpark partly funded by the public? Bill Smith, simply because everything else last year had to have been his fault and he never should've ever traded with those thieves formerly known as the DEVIL rays? C) Terry Ryan because he didn't do nearly enough to address the "issues" on the roster once he returned? D) Joe Mauer because, let's face it folks, that contract simply hamstrings the rest of the organization making it near impossible for them to field a competitive team around him? Oh yeah, and he's no #3 hitter anyway, can you say deuce? Have at it! -

The entire team stays healthy throughout the first half. Terry Ryan becomes so frustrated with the fact that he has nothing to say to the media that he decides to trade Denard Span. Twins Territory goes into meltdown because Span, a 2012 all star, is traded for a closer because Matt Capps blows multiple save opportunities and Glenn Perkins is relegated to mopup duty after eating so many twinkies (hey, he's got to find ways to spend all that money) that he gains 50 pounds and loses form on his delivery. Danny Valencia, our other 2012 all star, becomes officially adopted by Gardenhire and the new official poster boy for, "we just play the game the right way". Finally, Liriano's first half is SO good and the team has SO much $$$ going forward with other contracts coming off the books that the Twins sign him to a 5 year extension for$80 million.

Should Twins have Revere play every day in Rochester?
silverslugger replied to John Bonnes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Is Revere at best a 4th outfielder who will be used as late inning defensive and baserunning replacement? If so, he stays in the bigs. If not, and if you want to increase his value as a starting MLB OF then you may want to send him down to learn some things. I cringe at your option though. The Twins should want to bring the best 25 north and DM is not one of those, period, end of sentence. -
Nishi who? I was just beginning to think that it was nothing more than a bad dream. Reality is...he may well find himself attempting to help the team at Target Field at some point in the season so the more confidence he can get the better.

Interesting to see projected lineups for 2014 and beyond and realize almost none of the players on the team are from the group we've come to know and love throughout the second half of the first decade of this millenium. That was one of the first thoughts I had when Mauer signed his long extension, that he'd have to play through a complete retooling of the lineup within the confines of that contract. So, to the point, bringing back Punto takes us back to point A and doesn't get us to point B. With that said, it was strange to watch him playing that "scrappy" brand of ball for the Cardinals in the WS last fall.

AL Central Position Rankings - Starting Pitchers
silverslugger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Verlander, Masterson, Scherzer, Liriano, and Danks were my votes. To me, Liriano, Danks, Baker, and Floyd are all at same level so would've liked to have seen Floyd on the list.
