    "We may have enough guys to get by in the pen if the starters can get some relatively deep starts." The run that the Nationals are on is a result of starters averaging 7 innings. Now its crunch time and if starters can't go deeper than 4 or 5 innings forget playoffs I don't care who they get in the pen. Maybe there is no magic wand to accomplish that but it must happen never the less.

    If there is one player the Twins need on the field its Eddie Rosario. Hopefully he is back at 100% post All Star. The rest of July's schedule is favorable and, despite losing this game when it was there to be had, Twins did win the series. Don't look now but the Central is now the closest race with Cleveland now only 5.5 out and I think that is good. Twins should not be able to coast to the playoffs although it looked like they might be able to. I remember 2010 when the slide that lasted nearly a decade actually started with about 30 games left in the 2010 season even though they easily won the Central that year.

    Not losing 3 in a row still equates to a .333 winning percentage so the key is still winning series as it always has been. Give them a pass on a 2-4 road trip but really need to win this home series against Texas. There really is not a lot of difference between winning and losing at this level so confidence and expecting to win must be maintained if the potential for this season is to be realized.

    Pitching and small ball saved the day. 7 runs scored against the Twins in last 2 games on 2 swings. Otherwise pitching has been great. Berrios goes today so lets win the series, come home for Texas, win that series and enjoy the All Star break.

    "Jake Odorizzi to the IL with a blister." Always amazed me that a Major League pitcher could suddenly develop a blister half way through the season unless they have changed their delivery (even unintentionally) or maybe experimenting with a new pitch (I hope that is the case). "This team is falling apart. The offense will always be there, but I have significant doubts anything meaningful will be accomplished with this pitching staff." I think most of the recent losses have been when theTwins haven't reached the 5 run mark and pitching has held its own. Even this loss was a grand salami being the culprit and pitching was ok otherwise. I do agree that the Twins' staff has no one that can be counted on from one appearance to the next it seems. Need to win tonight and avoid going into the break in a funk. Also, and I haven't checked the record yet, I think they were better as a team prior to Sano's return coincidence or not.

    Twins should be able to go on cruise control/auto pilot for the second half. Just continue to avoid losing streaks. I don't think they have lost 3 in a row yet. Stay loose, stay on an even keel and stay healthy. When the Yankees come to town later this month I do think it should be treated as a mock playoff series because it very well may be.

    Never seen so many 0-7 and 1-7 in a box score. Oh well, still won the series and on to Chicago. Be nice to see the regular outfield back in tact hopefully after the All Star beak if not sooner.

    Perfect time for this topic. Unless something unpredictable happens the teams from New York and Houston are the only serious (note serious) threats to keep the Twins out of the World Series. If they do make it, the Dodgers do appear to be early favorites to win it. Only problem is there are still 5 games in June plus all of July, August and September left to deal with. Only bump in all of July are the 3 against the Yankees and its not too early to circle those 3 games and treat them like a playoff preview. Pitching and lineups should be set accordingly. No point in even dwelling on pitching since it is so obvious but priority needs to be to keep everyone healthy and game ready. Go Twins!

    That analysis plus 50 cents might get you a senior cup of coffee at McDonald's. What you see is what you get with Sano. Take it or leave it.

    When a team scores a total of 9 runs in 4 games it makes any mistakes by pitching and defense more glaring. If the bats don't get back on track it really makes no difference. 5 runs is the bench mark and Twins haven't scored more than 4 in the past 4 games. This is a 4 game series and just a split is ok so lets just do it starting with tonight.

    "If the Twins had not played 17 innings the night before/day of this game, they would not have felt the need to leave Gibson in so long when it was obvious by the second inning that he didn't have his stuff." Per tarheeltwins fan. That is one thing I will never understand about starting pitchers in Major League Baseball. They are the most coddled members of the pro sports community. They sit for 4+ days and have all the time in the world to prepare for the next game. Then they warm up and take the mound on the 5th day and suddenly discover that they "don't have their stuff"? Unless they are ill there is no excuse for not "having their stuff" If they don"t have their stuff why don't they have a plan B like the greats do to simply battle through a few innings? I once pitched a Little League game after spending the day on the beach in Florida and got shelled to the tune of 19-2. When the coach found out about my day on the beach he chewed me out in front of the team for a full minute. I know this is a pointless rant but I have absolutely no sympathy for starting pitchers in MLB not being ready to go unless they are disabled in some way.

    Twins used 9 pitchers and 11 position players in this game. How does Buxton not get into a 17 inning game? (Maybe an obvious answer that I missed.) Catch by Bradley in center was a blind squirrel/acorn example. He had his head completely off the ball facing the wall and the ball found his glove. Amazing play.) OK..win the series today. Gibson needs to go at least 7 and hopefully complete game. Agree Sano needs to sit and verdict on him is still out. Don't want him in a key defensive situation or a clutch hitting situation. Random numbers do not equal winning baseball.

    Bats will come alive against Price tonight and Gibson will shut the Sox down tomorrow. No worries. As Ben Hogan said, the most important shot (game) is the next one.

    Just win the upcoming Boston series and keep the mo going. Some losses are actually good in the long season and this was one of them. It was one of the 60 guaranteed to happen and the Twins do not want to get too far ahead of themselves.

    With a 45-22 record and a double digit game lead in the Central, the Twins have the luxury of being able to play just over .500 ball for the entire remaining 95 games and still finish with a 93-69 record. I would like to think that the plan is to wait for key trading deadlines before making any moves and still being able to have starters pitch 5 or 6 innings max. Only injuries and /or a total offensive collapse can keep the Twins from winning the Central and they can play with house money until the right moves are available. The bull pen actually has been a key factor in multiple wins this year and giving up a few runs with a 10-1 lead is no big deal.

    Almost impossible to envision this team not playing in October. So it is very tempting to start considering what will need to be done to win series against Yankees, Red Sox and Astros and maybe a couple of other teams. Already done with Houston for the year and only 3 against Yankees at home and all 6 against Red Sox left including 3 this month. No one thinks they have enough pitching so grabbing an arm or two for the pen won't be easy but other than that if it ain't broke don't fix it. Dog days are approaching and Twins are in enviable position of being able to continue to juggle lineups and keep players fresh. Main thing...don't think ahead too far and just beat Seattle tomorrow.

    Or not be afraid to let starters pitch more than a Little League game. Every game against a division team is a 2 game swing so this was huge. So far no losing streaks (2 doesn't count as a "streak"). Even HofF and possible HoF players for the Twins have had few if any games where they totally carried the team to a significant win. Do need to take 2 of 3 from Tigers before coming home. Kepler can take the night off tonight and let the other 8 do the job.

    I can't get over statements such as "eventually they will figure Odorizzi out" The key word is "execution" Repeat "execution". Schemes, plans, analytics and so on are ok but the team that executes the best usually wins. As long as Odorizzi maintains the command of his pitches he has demonstrated so far, it doesn't matter what the competition figures out. Same goes for all pitchers and position players. NBA playoffs are classic example as the TV and radio analysts say over and over that the teams have seen each other so much that there is nothing they can do strategy wise to make a difference. The teams that execute best and, yes, want it the most, win. Now wrap up May against the Rays and then on to June to continue road trip against Rays, Indians and Tigers. Heavy dose of Royals in June plus first shot at Red Sox who are coming on strong. Go Twins! Just play hard and loose and keep doin what you're doin.

    "I don’t actually think he’s anything special as an in-game manager. I don’t care for his lineups....." Excerpt from earlier post. I thought he was "over managing" at first too but now I think it is sheer brilliance. Almost every player gets a different spot in the batting order in games and those who are able play different positions. Almost everyone starts frequently. Result? A fresh approach for the whole team in most games and each game takes on its own identity which fits perfectly into the "one game at a time" approach that is necessary for the long season. It also re-enforces the notion of "team vs individual" and no roles just play. Also really like the idea of announcing the lineups for every series as was posted. As always, 2 factors determine win-loss record. How good are you? How good is the competition? Twins are obviously vastly improved as a team over recent years in more ways than one. The competition, in comparison, seems to be down overall from prior years. Way too early to worry about playoff matchups but October should be very interesting in 2019.

    Mr.Brooks posted in reply to my question about Berrios in game 3 of the series, "The team shouldn't make decisions for no other reason than padding a player's personal stats. It matters if the team wins. Which pitcher gets that W on his baseball card is meaningless." I fully understand that and was not able to see the game but if I was Berrios I would be a little ticked unless I had totally lost it was hurt. Starting pitchers live and die by wins and losses and all he needed was a chance to get one more out. Rocco must have been irritated beyond Berrios simply having a bad inning. If he (Berrios) was unable to locate anything, I could see it.

    Buxton should stay where he is in the lineup and the theory that the 9 hitter becomes leadoff is valid minus 1 ab and removes the stigma of actually being the leadoff hitter. Buxton is still in the development/comeback stage so leave well enough alone. Don't understand why Berrios was removed in game 3 one third of an inning away from a W still with a nice lead unless he had tweaked something. A local high school coach said about his team that they are better collectively than they are individually and, so far, that is the story of the 2019 Minnesota Twins. Keep it up.

    I love being wrong on a negative prediction and am happy to eat crow on thinking the Twins would lose if Sano started his first game back. I would be very happy to be wrong on my other reservations about Sano. He does look to be in good shape based on video clips. Time will tell but last night speaks for itself. Twins now on another 3 game streak and nice to have big enough leads to give the pen a little leeway. See how Perex does tonight. Go Twins!

    As has been said, 2 games in a row that the Twins of recent years would probably have found a way to lose but hung on and won. Now, how Sano is used is a reality not just speculation. I hope he is on the bench tonight to reaclimate and be around his new team mates. Maybe pinch hit. Having said that he will probably start at 3rd and he if does I am afraid the Twins will lose, nit necessarily because of Sano; just a feeling. I can't understand why Hildenberger throws that 80mph junk that he can't control. I think he has gotten bad advice on how to survive in the Major Leagues.

    That is what bothers me about Sano playing 3b on an every day basis. Would show up in the L column I am afraid. These types of games are what make the difference in Oct. Definitely one of the 42.

    Anything less than 5 runs usually means a loss in today's game. Now that the 2 Twins aces (so far this year) have lost can Gibson come through tonight? Would be nice to pull out this series and win the home stand before heading west. Seems like Rocco is doing a lot of lineup tinkering and I hope he is not being too smart by half as the old saying goes. Don't take this managing thing too seriously Rocco. Just let 'em play. My mistake....sorry Jake, you are at the top of the list ace wise the way you have pitched the past few games. Gibson still needs to come through.
