  1. Seth, if Florimon's defense is this legit and he isn't given to lapses like Alexi seems to have too often, I would be very happy with him as our SS next season. He reminds me a little of Alexi Ramirez in terms of speed and body. Jimminy Crickett, I too agree that MLB.tv would be awesome if not for the blackout stuff. I have to think that MLB is protecting their broadcast partners (FSN here for the Twins) by blacking out the market that FSN is trying to sell too. I had the season pass last year and ended up watching teams that I never would have had the opportunity to watch before.
  2. Hi Seth, I like where you are going with this. My only disagreement is with Duensing. I believe if he is allowed to continue to start he will be an average to slightly above average starter again next year (similar to 2010).
  3. Also, just have to add that this is a tough crowd. Man, maybe it's because a lot of us are passionate about baseball and writing. In general we have pretty good witty writers covering this team. Barrero used to suck..., but he's gone. Mackey and Reusse are solid. Hell, Reusse even goes to amatuer baseball games for fun. How many sports writers in other markets do that?
  4. Without a doubt the Twins need to bring in 2 starting pitchers for next season (unless they are okay with attendance continuing to plummet). That being said, why can't Diamond continue to pitch this well. He has good mechanics, good location, and seems to stay pretty calm.
  5. I agree Chavez. Let's see if we can maybe count on Hendricks for next year. Devries has exceeded expectations, but I just can't see him as a starter for any other team in MLB.
  6. Yeah, that would garner a lot of ratings Riverbrian, thanks for breaking this down. I learned about Cume and a lot more. You must work in the radio biz? So, what format should KTWN throw down? Maybe "walk up" songs 20 hours a day?
  7. I agree too. Try to trade Span and Willingham or go the other route and add 2 good free agent pitchers. Yes, his two walkup songs are truly awful. I like Doumit's shout out to the devil with his choice of Danzig. Capp's the Final Countdown was truly awesome also.
  8. First of all, the PED thing makes total sense. I was wondering how he turned it on the past two years. Bummer...Yes, let's hope the Twins can still make that one extra move.
  9. I agree with you that ideally you build from within and don't go the free agent route to heal your weaknesses. I kind of feel like right now it's a special situation because of two factors: 1. The new stadium and the perception that "the ownership got a handout to build the stadium, and here they are putting a crappy product on the field". 2. You have a core of players (Mauer, Morneau, Willingham, Span, Doumit) that could all be pretty good offensively for the next couple of years (minus possibly Morneau), and if you want to win with these guys, you can't wait to go with young starting pitchers.
  10. What about "overspending" to reverse a decreasing revenue trend like what the Twins are experiencing? My company might spend more than we budgeted to hire new Sales reps with the hopes of creating greater revenue in years 3, 4, and 5 (after losing money for years 1 and 2).
  11. Hey All, I might be in the minority here that think the Twins team currently has a decent owner. They are local, committed, and consistent. That being said they are also running a business and they are good business people. I have to think they are looking at the current situation of two bad seasons and fan discontentment seriously. I am wondering if they might be looking at a formula to calculate the team's winning percentage for upcoming seasons in relation to revenue. This could be really interesting if you have a model that not only predicts for current year, but how it relates/carries over for the next 2-5 years after. For example if a team wins a World Series, there is residual revenue that the team will continue to see for years after. Just like if a team loses 90 plus games 3 years in a row, it will take longer to rebound and regain revenue (brand has been tarnished and some fans will be slow to return). It may make sense for TR and ownership to be bold and sign two big free agent pitchers even if it means overspending short term just to restore revenue for the upcoming 2-5 years.
  12. Cool story! You're a lucky guy to find a great gal that likes baseball!
  13. Fair enough Wolfy. I like your taste in 2b. Cano is a special player and I hope that we draft/develop someone like him some day.
  14. I think there is some risk to this move too. When you have a semi independent station covering the team, fans tend to stick around that station before and after the game. The team gets more talk which is good for the ownership and their affiliate. I can see 1500 and kfan not spending as much time on the Twins after the switch.
  15. It certainly was a weak crop of FA starters. There really wasn't anyone on the market that was going to put this rotation over the top so I can't really fault TR for not signing more of them. But even with a healthy Baker and Pavano this rotation was mediocre at best. TR might have looked at this season as more of a "what do we have here?" and "let's stop the bleeding". He needed to find out if Mauer and Morneau could be counted on to contribute again before going after guys like CJ Wilson. I know I would have wanted to know if my two core players were back before trying to make a run again. He did the right thing in letting Kubes and Cuddyer go, bringing in Doumit, Carrol, and Willingham. It's this offseason that he better go for it though. The rest of the team is ready and the window will close soon with this core.
  16. Absolutely. It all fell apart so fast. Pavano, Liriano, Baker, Blackburn, Slowey all had double digit wins that year and pitched over 150 innings each. Then you had Duensing finish the year as a starter and did ok (I think he took over when Slowey went down). All those guys were ages 26-28 except Pavano. Then there was Perkins (still a starter at that time in AAA), Swarzak (prospect star fading, but still only 24 at that time), Gibson (22) at AA along with Guerra (21) and two more 21 year olds in Wimmers/Hendricks at A ball. Wow that blew up fast.... It's astonishing isn't it?! I was feeling pretty good about your rotation at that time too. I guess you can never have too much in the bank just in case.
  17. You aren't alone on that. I want him to succeed too. He seems like a good dude.
  18. I really like 1500's format from 9am until 3pm. I wonder what they will do also. I am guessing some of them might be recruited. Unfortunately, KTWN hosts probably will not be very critical/objective about the Twins.
  19. I don't mind Carrol on this team. His at bats are decent and he comes up with some clutch hits. He's exactly what I was hoping we had last year when the team didn't seem to have anyone who could play shortstop. I like Casilla though too. If Plouffe can continue to develop and produce, I would have no problem with Carrol, Casilla, and Dozier back next year.
  20. I think the Twins ownership is in a unique situation right now. They have a chunk of their fanbase that is angry (I would argue disproportionately) about Mauer and the team not spending enough. There is another chunk of the fanbase that has tuned out after another bad season. I think they have to consider spending their way out of this problem until their farm system is self sufficient. Spend more than you normally would this offseason to ensure more positive revenues in the next 3 years. Let's hope we don't get into the bind that Cleveland is in where the fans don't trust mgmt and the mgmt won't spend because the fans are not showing up anymore.
  21. Where do you think he lands next year? Will he be offered a one year deal with another team? Signed to a minor league contract? Or will the Twins offer him a cheap multi year deal 2 years for 3 million?
  22. Since he now owns the hot corner (previously owned by the Coom Dawg), can we please call him Plouffe Dawg?
  23. I didn't pick up on that. I'd like to see Mauer grow into a leadership role though. It seems the current chemistry on the team is decent. Mornea, Mauer, Doumit, WillingHam, and Carrol are all veterans that seem to play well together. If only we had some arms to go with them.
  24. I'm not one of those guys pining for J.J. Hardy, but don't you think he would have been responsible for more like an 8 game positive swing last year if he was playing everyday instead of the Nishi/Plouffe mess we had?
