  1. That's a pretty superficial analysis of both Hughes and Yankee Stadium. Hughes is basically the WORST kind of pitcher for that stadium. He's a righty, which means lefties have an advantage against him. Which means lefties also get to take advantage of that stadium's ridiculously short RF porch. While not horrible at missing bats, he's not particularly good at it either so that doesn't help him out. And Hughes is a flyball dominant pitcher. Of course he's going to get killed in New York. He has almost the exact opposite profile of the guy you want pitching in that stadium... Everything about that place is working against him.
  2. ERA? Really, Shane? Garza is a better pitcher than Nolasco. No one is disputing that... But Garza is probably going to demand Sanchez money... And he's no Sanchez. Last season, Nolasco and Garza were pretty much the same pitcher. Same K%, similar BB%, similar ERA+, xFiP, etc. Yeah, Nolasco is *probably* going to regress a bit while Garza had a typical season... But if two guys having almost an identical season isn't "approaching the same production", I don't know what is.
  3. In a word, hells yes.
  4. A 6. The more I look at the numbers, the more I like Nolasco. He approaches Garza performance for 50% less money and one less year. Smart signing. Pick up Kazmir and it becomes a 9. Pick up Pelfrey and Salty and it becomes an 8. Pick up Pelfrey and Navarro and it's a 7. I'm floored by how many people want the Twins to go out and drop $80m on Garza. That's bad baseball... In 2016-2017, the Twins would be paying three players in their mid-30s roughly $60m. That doesn't leave a lot of room to pay the kids and fill potential holes when this roster actually looks good. Get Nolasco this season, reevaluate need next offseason and act accordingly. Buying everybody in one offseason is a good way to hamstring yourself in 3-4 years.
  5. A 4/$48m deal. Nice. Lower than I expected.
  6. I think asking for a pitcher better than Nolasco in one offseason is a pretty tall order. This team doesn't need to be rebuilt in a day. I'm happy with Nolasco (not my first choice but perfectly acceptable) and a lower tier guy this offseason with the intent of doing it again next offseason.
  7. You're probably thinking of Josh Johnson. Nolasco pitched ~200 innings with two teams.
  8. The cobbler's children are the last ones to get a phone call. Or something like that.
  9. I just took a deeper look at his stats as well. He's better than I thought, actually. Nice signing, particularly if it's only for three years.
  10. I hope it's not Nolasco. I'm not going to blast the front office if it is but I really wanted Garza or Jimenez... Hell, I'd prefer Yoon over Nolasco.
  11. It looks like there's a plug-in that does just this but I'll need to vet the code a little before installing it. I'll look into it more over the weekend.
  12. Agreed. Right now, the only guy I'd give up a pick for is Jimenez. With Garza on the market, I don't think it's necessary to give up a pick to get a good pitcher (but I'd still give up the pick for Ubaldo).
  13. Huh. Never realized that was a problem. I'll look into it this weekend. Trust me, this is something we're very cognizant of and talk about fairly regularly. We try to keep a respectful distance from the organization to maintain a "level head" and balanced analysis.
  14. While I think a healthy Mike Pelfrey's ceiling is probably an ERA+ of 105 or so (with 95-100 more likely), he's only going into his age 30 season. His age isn't a problem.
  15. An MLBTR feed has been added to the front page and all article pages. It has no title at the moment, though... I'll have to work on that later.
  16. I'll pop in to say that, as a forum admin, I can assure everyone that we do not need many, many more of these threads. I'll leave this one in place (for now) but if people continue to create duplicate threads just to complain about the same topics over and over again, we will start merging and issuing infractions.
  17. Yep. The typical player model through late 30s is pretty ugly. That doesn't mean Arroyo will break down. He could very well be healthy through his early 40s. But banking on that being the case is a mistake.
  18. I think you mentioned that in another thread and I thought it was a great idea (the MLBTR point). I'll look into it and see what can be done.
  19. While I don't entirely disagree, I'd like to point out that it's somewhat of a leap to expect continued health of a "durable" pitcher through his late 30s.
  20. It's something we've bandied about in the past... We just need to figure out how to implement it without it consuming a huge portion of John, Nick, Seth, and Parker's time.
  21. Well, the like button has returned and speeds have been just fine for me over the past two weeks. Are you still having problems?
  22. They are absolutely superior options to Navarro. I never pretended that Navarro is remotely comparable... But he can be had for less years, maybe even one. In fact, I'd pursue AJ if Navarro can't be signed for one year. To go even further, I'd be very high on Saltalamacchia if he can be had on a two year contract... But I'm hesitant to go that third year. I'd rather overpay for two years than add that third season with Pinto on the roster. Don't get me wrong, I don't like Navarro... I view him merely as a stop-gap while banking on the continued progression of Pinto.
  23. I have a personal dislike of Pelfrey's pitching style so that taints my view of this offer. Looking at it objectively, there is good reason to suspect that Pelfrey will pitch better in 2014 and is actually a pretty decent "buy low" candidate. On the other hand, I'm really tired of contact pitchers. Even signing one that looks to rebound leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's also why I'm meh on Arroyo (also his age). If the Twins exit this offseason with Pelfrey and one of Garza, Arroyo, or Santana to bolster the rotation, it won't be a bad offseason. I won't be crazy about it but it's not enough to call for the firing of Ryan, a guy who has done a pretty stellar job turning this farm system into best-in-class. But if the Twins don't get a guy like Garza to complement Pelfrey, then yeah, this offseason is a massive failure.
  24. That is absolutely possible that his overall OPS might not be affected much... And if you're happy with .740 OPS from Salty, that's fine... But for that money and those years (mostly the years), I'd want to see more than that. Salty at a .740 OPS is not a very good offensive player. Given that his OBP is absolutely atrocious, the vast majority of that OPS is coming from slugging, which isn't *quite* as valuable as avoiding the out. If there's such a thing as an "empty" .740 OPS, he'd be the poster child for it. That doesn't mean Saltalamacchia is a bad player. He seems to be decent defensively and that "empty" OPS is still pretty high for a catcher. But I don't know if that's what the Twins need in 2015 and 2016, which is why I'm hesitant about signing him. Again, like Ervin Santana, I hate signing a guy coming off what looks like a career year, going into a ballpark that might hurt him a little, adding even more strikeouts to a strikeout-happy lineup, and stacking an already lefty-dominant lineup even more to that side of the plate. In short, I think there are better options out there for 2014 and beyond. Not at catcher, but that's okay with me... If Pinto collapses in 2014, reevaluate the position and go from there in 2015. I think a stop-gap catcher like Navarro is just fine for what will probably be a very bad 2014 squad. Put that money into pitching, pick up a couple of stop-gap position players, and let it ride.
  25. I stopped watching the dude pitch because I found his routine so aggravating.
