  1. I don't like AJ at this point in his career, either... But he's one of the many options at C that fall under the "better defensively than Ryan Doumit" category. Which happens to be pretty much every guy on a MLB roster at this point. Hell, Yogi Berra may still qualify for that label. Even if AJ collapses, there's no such thing as a bad one year deal.
  2. He is homer-prone from both sides of the plate, for sure... But we all know RF in Target Field is a tough place to put one out of the park. LF is probably marginally harder to hit one out than Yankee Stadium as well. Phil Hughes is going to give up homeruns. Anyone who thinks he'll magically stop is deluding themselves. The question comes down to two things, IMO: 1. Will the move to TF help his homer rate significantly enough to matter 2. Will the move out of NYC help Hughes center himself a bit I think both things will happen... But to what degree is very much up for debate and we'll have to wait for games to be played to know for sure. There's a reason Hughes was signed for $8m a season at the age of 27 years old, after all. He's not a perfect pitcher by any stretch of the imagination. The question now is whether Anderson, Minnesota, and Target Field will be enough to turn him into a 4.00 ERA pitcher or whether he's destined to float around a 4.50 ERA for his career.
  3. The Twins shouldn't even consider trading prospects at this point. They have too many holes, too many needs, and not enough sure things in the minors to start dishing them off for expensive players that will be in a decline phase by the time Buxton, Sano, and Arcia are raking. Besides, their two best (possibly expendable) trade chips, Rosario and Kepler, are low value right now. Rosario is suspended and Kepler struggled. Now is not the time to trade either.
  4. I'd give Salty two years. I wouldn't give AJ or Navarro more than one. If it takes three years to get Salty and two years to get AJ, patch together a Doumit/Pinto platoon and cross your fingers. If Pinto falls on his face, reevaluate for 2015.
  5. Sure, if you exclude certain months, you can make any mediocre player look really bad. I could do the inverse by removing Correia's May or July. Then he looks really good for the season, posting an ERA under 4.00. His second and third best months were August and September, which show that he didn't just fade as the year progressed. Mediocre players reach mediocrity through playing well some months, bad in others. They don't post a 4.2 ERA every month of the season. Meh to the cherry-picking of stats to manufacture a point.
  6. That's really the biggest issue. If Correia was the second pick-up, I think most of us would have accepted the deal. The problem is that Corriea was "the guy" last offseason and while he was definitely a bargain, the thinking behind the deal was still tough to swallow.
  7. I didn't think we'd see anything before the Winter Meetings because... Well, because little happens before the Winter Meetings, particularly in the case of pitchers like Nolasco. Hughes isn't as surprising, much like Vargas. A questionable pitcher who is going to look for a specific spot and/or money and once he gets a good offer, he's going to take it because the market could quickly evaporate under him as the teams with money snatch up the better guys and fill holes. Guys like Jimenez, Nolasco, Garza, they are usually in demand by several clubs and use the Winter Meetings to leverage demand and then sign between the Winter Meetings and Christmas. Kudos to JR for, like Don Corleone, making Nolasco an offer he couldn't refuse.
  8. While a Spanish-speaking catcher is a good idea in the abstract, am I the only one who has looked at the roster and noticed that it isn't a real issue? Here are the possible Twins starters: Correia, Worley, Deduno, Nolasco, Diamond, Hughes, Albers, Gibson, Hendriks. On-the-way starters: Meyers. One guy who isn't a native English speaker... A guy that has been in MLB farm systems for 11 years. I'm sure he has a grasp on the language at this point. The bullpen is little different. Frankly, it doesn't matter if the catcher speaks Spanish at this point and it won't matter until Berrios hits the Majors.
  9. If you keep comparing the Carpenters to Michael Bolton, you and me's gonna have words.
  10. I agree, particularly on Worley. I'm still somewhat positive about him. And no way do Diamond or Worley clear waivers. No freakin way. Deduno, maybe. Vance and Scott have had success as recently as 2012 and Worley hasn't even hit his prime seasons yet.
  11. For those advocating a return of Pelfrey, what do you think the Twins should do with Diamond, Deduno, and Worley? I don't think any of them will clear waivers and if the Twins pick up Pelfrey, that leaves one rotation spot for three guys.
  12. I agree with the sentiment but Nolasco is a massive upgrade to the rotation, not a minor one. He might be worth 3-4 wins by himself because of the dreck he will be replacing.
  13. He's the best guy on the 40 man and this season's FA crop is pathetic so yeah, he's probably going to be the 2014 starting SS.
  14. Yeah, still too many lineup questions to answer and Ryan could surprise us all with a trade or two.
  15. Meyer should be up when it's right for Meyer to be up. I'm not a fan of rigid timetables. Let the player dictate when he gets the call though on-field performance. With that said, I think he'll be up just before or after the AS break.
  16. I gave the Twins about a 10% chance of picking up either Nolasco or Hughes. Picking up both was out of the question.
  17. Eh... Baker hasn't really pitched in what, 20 months? He has the most ability of the three but given his rust and TJS, I'd take Nolasco over him in 2014. A healthy and proven Scott Baker might be a different story.
  18. Nah, you're pretty much spot-on, iastfan. I've thought about an app quite a bit but haven't come up with any good ways of implementing and maintaining it without it becoming a full time job in itself.
  19. What browser and device are you using to view the site? My iPhone logs me out quite a bit but I haven't found a fix for it... But that doesn't sound like the same problem.
  20. Yeah, that's pretty much a "well, duh" option. 400 innings in two seasons means he's at least close to league average or better.
  21. As opposed to Mike Pelfrey, who didn't benefit at all from pitching in the national league or Citi Field... And was still worse than Scott Baker in pretty much every way one pitcher can be worse than another.
  22. Funny how he's posted multiple seasons better than anything Pelfrey has done in his career, despite being so mentally weak. Baker is a better pitcher. Period. He strikes out more, walks less, gives up fewer runs and hits, and goes deeper into games. A healthy Mike Pelfrey is a #4 pitcher, maybe a #3 on a bad team. A healthy Scott Baker is a #3 in an average year, a #2 when he's really rolling. I will never understand why Minnesota fans didn't appreciate what they had in Baker.
  23. Scott Baker is a much better pitcher than Mike Pelfrey. I don't care if he pitched to guys up, out, down, or whatever... His results are better than Pelfrey, and that's what matters.
  24. The Twins play 81 games in Target Field. The Twins play a combined 18-20 games in Comerica and US Cellular.
  25. Great post, John. Thanks again for participating in this site, everyone. Without all these great contributors, we'd all be talking to empty space.
