  1. He needs to miss more bats. Lots and lots of bats. If he can do that while maintaining a solid groundball rate, he'll be just fine.
  2. Let him hang himself, I say. Either he pitches well and gets the win or he implodes and is replaced by May.
  3. All of this. I like Pinto and think he has a shot at being a nice piece for the Twins for quite some time... But I don't think he's suffering by getting a decent number of PAs and learning catching from a multitude of vets in Minnesota instead of starting in Rochester every day. Would I like to see him get more PAs and catching starts as the season progresses? Absolutely, but I don't think it's an issue yet. If Gardy continues to bench him through the AS break, then it might be a problem.
  4. In my post, I started typing a paragraph about the Braves and Cardinals but deleted it because I didn't feel like typing an essay.
  5. I viewed the Pelfrey contract as insurance. Unfortunately, he got hurt so that insurance policy was useless. The Twins moved on quickly with Pelfrey. I wish they would now do the same with Correia.
  6. The Twins shouldn't make decisions based on the needs of a farm team whose fortunes change drastically every year as players move in and out of the system. If the front office feels May and Meyer are ready, they should be in Minnesota with no consideration given to the Red Wings' playoff hopes. Learning how to send MLB hitters back to the dugout is more valuable than a AAA playoff race.
  7. Fair enough. Yeah, Morales' contract is pretty modest, though it is prorated. $12m for a season is a pretty healthy paycheck for a player.
  8. Eh, I think everyone's being too hard on Pelfrey. If he's healthy and throwing 92-93, he's an okay fifth starter who is being paid fifth starter money. I didn't and still don't really have an issue with the signing provided he was the third starter they signed, which he was. On the other hand, the Twins should not hang on to a guy like that just because they're paying him $5m. Thankfully, they didn't put up with his performance for long. Take a flyer on a guy like that, don't be too surprised or hang on too long if he stumbles.
  9. Yep, and the only thing they lose is money when they're already under budget. This is a win all around for everyone.
  10. My thoughts as well. I think the Twins are artificially keeping his innings count low so that he can pitch deeper into the season with some of those innings coming in Minnesota.
  11. No, it's not. To get an extra year of service time, the Twins would have to wait until May of 2015 to promote Meyer. And that seems like pretty poor resource management. Meyer will be 25 next season. Start the clock on him this season and let him take his licks against MLB hitters for awhile.
  12. Uh... No. Trevor May is 24 years old and is dominating AAA hitters. This is his seventh (!) season as a minor league pitcher. He has 738 MiLB innings under his belt. It's time for him to try his hand against MLB batters. I'm one of the more patient people on this board re: prospect development and promotion but even I can see that Trevor May's time has come. He needs to get the call. There's rotation space for him and maybe most importantly, he deserves that call. He has earned it.
  13. I always said that the true test of the Rays would be how they drafted once they weren't getting perennial top five picks. Thus far, it hasn't gone well for them. Lots of teams build a winning franchise when they get to take the best players out of every draft. The true test is when they continue to win in years 6, 7, 8, etc. Those are the years when they have to rely on nailing it with mid-20s picks every draft to continue succeeding in MLB.
  14. Round. Player - Slot Value - Signing Bonus 1. Nick Gordon - $3,851,000 - $3,851,000 2. Nick Burdi - $1,218,800 - $1,218,800 3. Michael Cederoth - $703,900 - $703,900 4. Sam Clay - $476,100 - $400,000 5. Jake Reed - $356,400 - $350,000 6. John Curtiss - $266,900 7. Andro Cutura - $199.900 - $175,000 8. Keaton Steele - $161,300 - $115,000 9. Max Murphy - $150,600 - $130,000 10. Randy LeBlanc - $140,700 - $90,000 Post here if anyone signs and I'll update the list.
  15. Nice. MLB changing their draft signing rules was one of the smartest thing they've done in a long time. Now guys can get right back into baseball instead of waiting for a year or better to play in the minors.
  16. This gets fixed in a hurry through one of two methods: 1. Give MiLB players a seat at the CBA negotiations 2. Split MLB and MiLB into separate unions Both are reasonable solutions, both will pay immediate dividends and nobody in their right mind can say that it's unfair to either side. All that MiLB players want is a seat at the table. Everyone deserves a seat at the table. Period.
  17. Or you can go work for Wal-Mart. Oh, wait, that's right... Drafted minor leaguers can't go play for another league. They are the property of their drafting organization. That analogy is completely inapplicable because the majority of minor leaguers have no options other than "take what we give you or leave baseball entirely". Those are some pretty awful options and don't sound much like a "free market" to me.
  18. Yep. Imagine a "union" whose only representatives and voting blocs are executive level management, a highly-paid group that make up only 5-10% of the total workforce. Naturally, those executives look out for their own interests and pay the 90-95% of the unrepresented workforce little or no attention. As a factory floor worker who was drafted into and contractually bound to that single factory, how would that make you feel? Minor league players have no representation, are legally bound to their franchise (they can not go play in an independent league, in Korea/Japan/wherever), and are paid peanuts. It's a grossly unfair system and has nothing to do with the "free market" because these workers aren't free in the first place. They can't go play baseball anywhere else after they're drafted and they have zero input on who drafts them at all.
  19. Agreed on May/Correia but I'd give Deduno one more start and then evaluate. I like Sam but I see three issues: 1. He pitched well in the pen and can certainly go back to that role 2. He struggles to go deep into games 3. Meyer needs some MLB exposure, particularly if he's on an innings limit There's nothing stopping this team from bringing up Meyer in 10-12 days, letting him get 8-10 starts, and then giving his spot either back to Sam or bringing up a guy like Johnson to finish out the season. Lots of options to serve this team's needs in both the short- and long-term. But really, I'm also okay with Deduno getting several more starts... But Correia needs to go yesterday.
  20. Agreed. This team cannot win with the rotation in its current state. Hopefully the Morales signing is just the beginning of change.
  21. Accusation of steroid use without proof is not tolerated. Period.
  22. Indeed. Love what he's doing, he cannot keep it up. Nobody can hit successfully at that clip over a sustained period.
  23. Way too much hindsight going on here. Nelson Cruz hasn't had a 30 homerun season since 2009. Nobody expected him to have 21 homers in early June. No one.
  24. If I was the Twins, this is what I would have handed Bud Selig two days ago in the second round: "And with the 46th pick in the draft, the Minnesota Twins draft Nick Burdi out of Louisville. Also, they have signed Kendrys Morales to a one year contract. It appears the Terry Ryan left a note... 'Neener neener neener, Jack Zduriencik.' The Seattle Mariners are now on the clock."
  25. Yeah, anything over 90% is close enough for me. I consider that going up against your cap, as even relative unknowns (but big talents) like Lewis Thorpe go for $500,000. Once you get down into the sub-$100k range, you're combing through leftovers.
