  1. There are plenty of reasons to front-load a contract. For example, the Twins are $25m+ under their self-imposed cap going into 2015. Giving a guy like Melky ~$20m of that and then paying him ~$5-7m for three additional seasons gives you flexibility to trade the player down the road or it allows you to fill more holes in 2016-2018 because Melky is paid so little.
  2. It's a pretty bad defense by any measure. I often wonder how much damage that defense is doing to the pitching staff, making a mediocre/bad staff look absolutely terrible.
  3. Recovery day. Can the Twins win three of four against the Tigers or will Scherzer force a split? Will the Twins return to scoring double-digit runs without Twins Daily pub crawl attendees in the stands? Will we see the good Gibson or mediiocre/bad Gibson today? Why am I asking so many questions? Can someone post the lineups when they become available? I have to run some errands.
  4. I think he had legitimate concerns but as can be the case with KLaw, hyperbole overrode legitimate concern and turned into click bait. There are still concerns about Vargas. His success is exciting but PAs 100-300 will be very telling.
  5. Tigers: 1. Ian Kinsler - 2B 2. Ezequiel Carrera - CF 3. Miguel Cabrera - 1B 4. Victor Martinez - DH 5. J.D. Martinez - LF 6. Nick Castellanos - 3B 7. Don Kelly - RF 8. Alex Avila - C 9. Andrew Romine - SS Twins: 1. Danny Santana - CF 2. Brian Dozier - 2B 3. Joe Mauer - DH 4. Kennys Vargas - 1B 5. Chris Parmelee - RF 6. Eduardo Nunez - 3B 7. Eduardo Escobar - SS 8. Eric Fryer - C 9. Jordan Schafer - LF
  6. That's pretty much a guarantee for me.
  7. I'm drunk so let's play two.
  8. It's not excuse-making. Mauer has a 1.011 OPS since returning to the lineup. He has been a legitimately good player since the injury. Will he earn his salary at first base? Probably not... but that doesn't mean he's incapable of being a good player.
  9. Hey, they might miss 90 losses this season. They're right on the border of being a 90 loss team right now.
  10. That's basically an All-Star corner outfielder from a platoon. I like the idea of Arcia getting ABs against lefties but should he fail, this would be a great fall-back option.
  11. Wow. Do the Twins have anything left in the tank? The Twins recalled Pino and are facing some guy named George Runie Farmer. He goes by Buck for obvious reasons. Two pitchers. A combined MLB experience of 60.1 innings. This is going to be a real nail-biter, I can feel it. Lineups:
  12. If you read through my posts, I've said multiple times that May needs to be in MLB. My point is about the distress over him not being here in June, not whether he should be here today.
  13. I get Schafer being a starter in CF if you want to see Santana at short. Other than that... *shrugs*
  14. I have the feeling we're not going to be particularly stringent about what you post in the Sports Bar, just stating that none of us had talked about it yet.
  15. To be honest, we haven't talked about it. I have no idea if we'll take future action if the Sports Bar forum becomes inundated with football talk. I doubt we'll do anything but that's not really the point of the Sports Bar forum. As for being locked out of Vikings Journal while at work, that should remedy itself in time. It's a new site and it will take time to clear some of the more aggressive site filters used in workplaces.
  16. You realize you're talking about 10+ wins. You're essentially arguing that the Twins' mistakes cost them 1.5 Mike Trouts. That simply isn't realistic.
  17. Can the Twins help keep Detroit out of first place and the playoffs? As Twins fans, do we even care who makes the playoffs? Tonight, the Twins have Tommy "Hey, at least I'm back in MLB" Milone going against some guy named Robbie Ray. The Good: Milone is probably going to pitch better at some point. Probably. The Bad: Not really seeing any bad here. *looks at lineup* Oh, hey, look. Jordan Schafer is in the lineup again. There you go. The Ugly: Oswaldo Arcia's haircut. (in truth, I think it's pretty awesome in a horrible "omg look at this dude's baseball card in 20 years sort of way") Detroit: Ian Kinsler - 2B Torii Hunter - RF Miguel Cabrera - 1B Victor Martinez - DH J.D. Martinez - LF Nick Castellanos - 3B Eugenio Suarez - SS Bryan Holaday - C Rajai Davis - CF Minnesota: Danny Santana - CF Brian Dozier - 2B Joe Mauer - 1B Kennys Vargas - DH Oswaldo Arcia - RF Trevor Plouffe - 3B Kurt Suzuki - C Eduardo Escobar - SS Jordan Schafer - LF
  18. Trevor May currently has an xFIP of 8.04. That's pretty much all you need to know about Trevor May's first ~12 innings in MLB.
  19. There were obvious mistakes made along the way but your first paragraph is worth maybe four wins combined. That's still a long way from .500. This team isn't going to win until the roster has 8-10 above average prospects playing to their potential. That's all there is to it. The good news is that Santana, Gibson, Vargas, and Arcia look pretty good. The bad news is that the Twins need five more of those guys.
  20. I don't understand it either. My only point is that before going full-frontal on management, it's prudent to take a look at what happened with Gibson, what is happening with May, and give consideration to the idea that the Twins might have a better understanding of their situation than we do. I'm not sure the Twins are right, I'm only saying that they're better informed.
  21. I didn't think the Wolves had a shot at getting a decent return for Love. If the trade is as advertised, it looks like they did just that. Kudos to them.
  22. Good news for the Twins. That's all that needs to be said about that.
  23. How? Those early 80s teams didn't build themselves on free agency and the only way the 2014 Twins are a .500 club is if they went out and spent a bunch of money. If that's your argument, so be it... But either way, a comparison to the 1984 squad is not a good one. Those teams had Puckett, Gaetti, and Hrbek on them. Their 2014 equivalents (Buxton and Sano) have suffered lost seasons in the minor leagues.
  24. The Sox are back-loading a contract? That makes... no sense whatsoever. If anything, they should be trying to front-load a contract because they're a looooooong way from contention. Honestly, they should be blowing up the team and starting over but that's another discussion entirely.
  25. The football discussion exists and your account works for football discussion, the colors on the site are different and the domain is different. That's about it. There's an NFL discussion forum over at Vikings Journal if you want to participate there. Some people want tighter integration, some want near isolation of the sites. We chose something in the middle.
