  1. I remember last week someone implied Jeff Bridich (Rockies GM) is incompetent (was it Jimmer, maybe?). I thought the statement was hyperbolic at the time. After seeing the details of this trade, I'm truly sorry for doubting that statement and I'm disappointed Ryan didn't take this grand opportunity to absolutely fleece the Rockies. I can't believe that was the best option on the table. It reminds me of the time I was watching an auction of George Martin's piano (composer of many Beatles' songs) and it went for something like $45,000 because it appeared no one understood the value of what was on the block. Once I picked my jaw off the floor, my only thought was "sonuvabitch, I wish I had $45,000 because somebody just got hosed". If you can't get at least one top 30-40 prospect for Tulowitzki, you're not very good at your job.
  2. You're intentionally being disruptive to the thread. Please stop. You know damned well I said nothing of the sort.
  3. Keep lining up those strawmen, Dave. In no way, shape, or form have I suggested Escobar is even a good starting shortstop.
  4. I don't think I'm overrating or underrating anyone. Reyes would be an improvement, I just don't like his pay or his player profile going forward. In no way am I suggesting he's not better than their internal options.
  5. Yep, the Padres made the playoffs with an 82-80 record some time in the mid to late 2000s. That's the worst full-season playoff record in history and would have been virtually impossible under the pre-WC alignments. That Padres team would have finished third in the 1987 AL West.
  6. Eh, I just don't like Reyes for Gonsalves. I don't see that working out for the Twins in the long run. I'm just not a fan of Reyes when you get right down to it. I don't see his speed or relative power translating to Target Field after being in Toronto for the past few years.
  7. I agree the Twins shouldn't sell the farm but you don't punt when you hold a playoff position on July 31st, which the Twins probably will.
  8. "Slim to none" is overstating it but I'd wager the Twins' chances in the playoffs are lower than every other team who look like they're going to make the playoffs, NL or AL.
  9. It's not my money and all that yadda yadda but I'd keep Nolasco and try to acquire Reyes because I want to give up as little prospect talent as possible for Jose. Putting Nolasco in the deal forces the Twins to give up a decent prospect. Given how the Rockies basically handed away Tulo, I think it's pretty clear their first and foremost goal is "save money".
  10. Dave, you're smarter than this. Don't use anecdotal evidence to support an observation that requires hundreds of data points. If I wanted to make a point, I could dig through the archives and find footage of Ozzie Smith punting a game-losing ball and declare him a terrible shortstop. You're letting yourself go completely off the rails about Eduardo.
  11. Except for the part where that's not even a little bit true. Most people on this board think he's an adequate defender as a short term option AND the defensive metrics back up that observation. Eduardo Escobar is not a perfect solution but he's the best solution the Twins have and it's not even close.
  12. Yeah, this. The bullpen can't wait. If you're going to acquire bullpen pieces, it should have been done a month ago but what's done is done. It needs to be done NOW. I'd gamble on finding a catcher in August over waiting to fix the bullpen.
  13. It's a bit unfair to say "why hasn't that happened?" when the team refuses to play two of the three players in the conversation. At the very least, Escobar should have received his shot months ago.
  14. I might make a phone about Reyes but nothing more than that. Offer salary relief and that's it. But yeah, move on to other positions now that Tulo is gone.
  15. Good god, man. That's more than the Rockies got for Tulo (or at least comparable). Considering Reyes' contract, my initial offer would be a half full box of 2006 Nick Punto bobbleheads. I *might* move up a bit from that point in negotiations but not far.
  16. The price in prospects would have to be almost free for me to consider Reyes and his contract.
  17. Standing pat is the only unacceptable course of action. I'd rather see the team flip Hunter, Pelfrey, and Milone than stand pat.
  18. I'll be mighty disappointed if Ryan refused to offer that kind of value for Tulo. But it's also possible the Pohlads had no interest in adding that salary.
  19. I didn't see it either. Only found it after a cmd+f.
  20. Fangraphs splits page. Dunno where on the page, just did a find on xFIP.
  21. Yeah. Gonsalves is too much for a reliever rental. Pass.
  22. Yes. Even factoring in Tulo's home/road splits, we kinda reached consensus that somewhere in the .840-.860 range should be expected. We based it on his road numbers and factored in his reduction in numbers thanks to NL West parks. Not as good as his .900+ Coors numbers but still definitely elite. Not assuming decline due to age or injury, he's basically a shortstop version of Brian Dozier.
  23. Which ad slot? I'm testing out a new network (you may have spotted the quizzes in the right sidebar) and if it was in one of those quiz slots, let me know ASAP. They promised me those would be video-free.
  24. I seem to recall they are close to or at the cap most seasons. It's hard to remember because the signing period is so damned long.
  25. Somehow I read that article and saw "May of 2013", not "November". *shrugs* As for the 2014 outfield defense, one can't turn around the Titanic in five seconds.
