Berrios would probably be better than Boyer. He probably wouldn't be better than Jepsen, at least not immediately (and the Twins need immediately). Nevermind that Jose hasn't pitched an inning of relief since 2012 or so. Jepsen is not an awful reliever, folks. He's a guy with some upside who is having a bit of a down year after a slow start. I don't really like the acquisition but it's definitely not worth the kind of vitriol it's getting right now. As Parker just tweeted: "In last 2 years, Kevin Jepsen's .176 BA vs RHB is 9th-lowest among RH relievers. RH in Twins pen currently have worst BA vs RHB (.295)"
It's better than nothing, which is what we had the pleasure of witnessing from May 1 until today. But we're both in agreement more should have been done earlier and Jepsen is somewhat eyeroll-worthy on a team with so many apparent flaws. A few people on this board are acting like I'm a huge fan of the trade simply because I'm not classifying it as "TEH WORST TRADE EVAH".
That's how I feel. I don't particularly like Jepsen but it appears his velo was down earlier in the season before coming back up in the past six weeks. Since June 1st, his k/9 is around 8.5. I don't like giving up Hu but c'mon, it's Hu. If I was Ryan I would have aimed higher but this is hardly the disaster people are making it out to be.
Hu hasn't averaged 9 k/9 since rookie ball. Also, I said it was too much to give up for Jepsen but the way people are acting around here, you'd think the Twins just traded away Jose Berrios.
People are going a little nuts over Hu. He's an interesting arm but he's a long way from elite and the list of pitchers who project higher than him are: Berrios Gonsalves Thorpe Jay Stewart (this one is a bit iffy but I'll still take Kohl) Too much for Jepsen but it's not like the Twins traded the next Koufax.
I think everybody here is a little too high on Hu. He's not an elite pitcher and there are a full 5-6 guys who project higher than him in the system. With that said, I don't like this trade. Not one bit. Not for Jepsen.
As long as none of the pitchers included are named Berrios, Gonsalves, Meyer, Hu, Thorpe, Stewart, or Burdi, I really couldn't care less what they gave up in trade.
As would I and I think the Broxton pickup was a good one by the Cards. But I'll wait for 3:30pm to come around before I declare it a failure on Ryan's part to miss out on Broxton. (but IMO, there's a decent chance 3:30 comes around and we all groan and roll our eyes)
This is only a fair criticism if the deadline passes and Ryan hasn't found someone better or equal to Broxton. It's not like the guy was stolen away from the Brewers. He's a decent, not great, arm.
Its difficult to train good habits when someone doesn't need good habits to succeed. Byron could run at will on almost anyone in the minors. I expect he'll get a tough lesson from MLB pitcher/catcher tandems and learn from it quickly.
