  1. That's not even a little bit true. I'd take Ryan's steady, albeit conservative, hand over many of the current GMs in baseball. Ryan is frustrating at times but at least he never seems to make a "are you %#€&ing kidding me?!?!?!" move and those can often destroy the long term ability to compete for short term mediocrity.
  2. If I'm Sano, I probably avoid a deal that extends beyond age 30. If he continues to be as good as he looks today, getting financial security through his prime seasons - which are controlled anyway - and then looking for the huge payday in his age 29/30 season makes sense. It's a lot easier to get that huge payday as a 30 year old than it is as a 32 year old. Locking Miguel up through arb and then +1/2 free agent seasons seems a reasonable compromise for everyone involved, though I doubt it happens before the end of the 2016 season. If you're a player, do you really care if you get $120m today if you can get $80m and a better shot at $200m when you're 29 or 30?
  3. Yes, this. It's like saying Obama doesn't really matter because his advisors are the ones negotiating and forming legislation. For good or bad, the guy at the top gets the credit or blame, if only because he's the one hiring the people doing the daily legwork.
  4. While it's exciting to see Buxton play again, the Twins aren't a better team than they were yesterday and are probably a bit worse. Hicks, at the very least, is as good as Buxton will be in the short-term. Probably better.
  5. Which slot? We run different networks in each slot so I can't complain to the network unless I know which slot is making noise.
  6. I couldn't even make it through the first season because it was so friggin' stupid after 3-4 episodes.
  7. Ah, okay. I watched Broadchurch right after it released in Britain and it wasn't available on Netflix... I can't remember where I found it. Maybe iTunes. The American version of The Killing and the British Broadchurch are a great comparison point for why British TV succeeds where American TV fails. Broadchurch is eight episodes. It gets in, tells a story, and then gets the **** out. If you tried to turn Broadchurch into a 13 episode season, it'd turn into a steaming pile of boring misdirection, just like The Killing. Also, take a look at Whitechapel. While the later seasons go off the rails a bit, the first season is pretty enjoyable and only three (long) episodes per season.
  8. If you liked The Fall, try to get your hands on Broadchurch. It's the British show that was later adapted to an American version, Gracepoint. I think The Fall is probably better but Broadchurch is a whodunit that doesn't make you want to smash your TV because it's so bloody stupid (eg. The Killing). It leads you on a (mostly) logical breadcrumb trail and doesn't fall into the trap of beating the viewer over the head with a never-ending series of red herrings.
  9. Maybe the best show I've watched this year.
  10. If you asked MLB GMs whether they'd rather have Norris or Berrios, I suspect most would choose Berrios. Norris hasn't exactly been earth-shattering this season and Jose keeps trending upward. I expect Berrios to crack a bunch of top 15, maybe even a few top 10, lists this offseason. But yeah, the two players aren't miles apart.
  11. With Hicks banged up, what excuse do we think the Twins will use to avoid recalling Buxton?
  12. Okay, who is going to take one for the team and call in a bomb threat to Yankee Stadium in about 15 minutes?
  13. I didn't think Mauer had a chance there. I figured he'd swing and miss at a 99mph fastball. Bad call.
  14. No, but it's fair to think they'll only swap pitcher-for-pitcher on the 40 man.
  15. I see the Twins' strategy here: by striking out in every PA, they're going to force Eovaldi out by the seventh or eighth inning at the latest.
  16. While I normally agree that it's a bad idea to add guys to the 40 man before they need to be added, this is a special situation. The Twins are floundering and they need help. Berrios is their best chance to receive that help. Would anyone here shed a tear if the Twins lost the likes of Logan Darnell?
  17. 1. This post is spot-on. 2. I hope your kid isn't a Vikings fan.
  18. This pretty much sums up my thoughts. I was super-high on the Hughes signing. I questioned the extension and received quite a bit of flak for it. I was moderately high on the Nolasco signing and felt it was necessary at the time. I wasn't entirely on board with the Santana signing because, like you, I wondered exactly how many #3 starters the Twins thought they needed this offseason. In the end, I can't single out any of those deals and say "this was terrible" but when combined, they hamstrung the Twins quite a bit going forward.
  19. Nothing is guaranteed but can you honestly take a look at this bullpen and say the front office has made legitimate attempts to fix it this season? Jepsen was a decent move but the problem started long before Jepsen arrived and one guy wasn't going to fix the problem. Again, I'm not going to criticize Ryan for failing to make a single move because I don't believe I should be that judgmental when I only have partial information. But when the front office fails to make any one of 20+ possible moves, they deserve all the criticism they get. I don't have all the answers but I knew in late April the bullpen was going to be an issue. Why didn't Ryan realize the same thing? It's his job.
  20. I'm pretty sure that's against the CBA's rules.
  21. Ryan had several options ranging from "obvious" to "whoa, risky". It started roughly three months ago. The Twins refused to recall Oliveros and instead turned him into a starter for Rochester. That move lasted all of about five minutes, BTW. Then Oliveros got suspended, hurt, yadda yadda yadda... Duffey could have been converted into a reliever. Alex Meyer is a wild card with a live arm. Nick Burdi is a bigger wild card with an even livelier arm. Or you could have just kept May in the bullpen and called up Berrios. There were and are options. I haven't even listed half the options Ryan had over the past ~90 days.
  22. While I don't like the Jepsen trade, Hu was not a top three pitching prospect. 1. Berrios 2. Gonsalves 3. Jay Are clearly superior. There are a few who are arguably superior: 4. Thorpe 5. Stewart 6. Burdi 7. Duffey
  23. Well stated article, John. As I've said before, I've never been as angry with a Twins front office as I am with the 2015 front office. They've had almost countless opportunities to correct course with the bullpen, yet they continually fail and let down a newly expectant fanbase. I hope they're embarrassed about all of this because they should be embarrassed.
