  1. Eh, I hated the May decision but it's hard to say it cost the Twins a postseason spot with certainty. I wanted May in the rotation but the bullpen was in worse shape than the rotation mid-season. They robbed Peter to pay Paul. The bullpen improved, the rotation was weakened. Maybe that was worth 3 games, maybe it was worth -3 games because without May, the Twins hand away more late-inning leads.
  2. Sure, this works if Nolasco is actually a bad pitcher. If he's a decent (or good) pitcher, paying for him to pitch somewhere else makes little sense. And that's why I said it *might* make sense in Nolasco's case. Or it might not.
  3. Maybe my memory is failing me but I'm pretty sure Pelfrey only received a rotation spot after Santana was suspended for PED use days before the regular season opener.
  4. Yeah, it's not uncommon to see a pitcher throw one batter all fastballs and then two batters later, only throw breaking balls. Obviously, that's not a viable regular season game strategy. Just like hitters, pitchers are getting their feel back for the game and we don't really know their status until ST is nearly over (and by that time, SSS noise makes the data largely irrelevant).
  5. For good or bad, the Twins don't like the idea of paying a player to pitch for another team. It's not out of the realm of possibility but it's unlikely. And it's not a bad strategy, despite what some on the board say about it. If you pay $5m of Nolasco's salary to offload him, you will not receive anything approaching $5m back in prospects. You'll be lucky to get $500k worth of prospects back in the deal. It's bad money management to hand away cash like that, though in a few cases it makes some sense (and Nolasco may be one of those cases, as it may require throwing in money to get him off the roster at all).
  6. Listening on the radio, he's been throwing strikes though I'd love to hear a velo reading on his starts (even though it may not tell us much). But, those will come soon enough. Right now, I don't know if we should be concerned with him not missing bats... It's still so early in the spring that not all pitchers, particularly veterans, are trying to miss bats. Each guy has his own routine and throwing heat that misses bats may not be a priority for Hughes at the moment. He could be doing a dozen things: working on a pitch, tuning command, setting his mechanics, etc. If he's not missing bats after March 20th, then it's time to show some concern. By that time, pitchers will be preparing for regular season games and will be mixing and matching pitches more like they would in a regular game.
  7. I think it will take a full season of acceptable performance to offload Nolasco. After two years of bad play and injury, I don't see a team falling over itself to pick up ~$18m worth of contract over the next season and a half. And if Nolasco is somehow above average, it may be in the Twins' best interests to keep him around for the entire season, provided they're contending. But offloading a $12m contract after the season concludes is a reasonable task, provided Ricky doesn't pitch his way to another well below average season.
  8. Duffey's not a lock but Molitor said he was the favorite going into Spring Training.
  9. You just illustrated why Nolasco is one of the few Twins players I really do not like. Little stuff like this just grates on me. Ricky, the Twins have paid you ~$25m to put up Samuel Deduno numbers and get injured. Keep your mouth shut and pitch your way into the rotation.
  10. LOL. Yeah, explore those "other options", Ricky.
  11. I went to a pretty good California State school in the late 90s and early 2000s (Long Beach State). It cost me a whopping $900 per semester in tuition (roughly two grand per year). At the time, I believe UC schools were about $2500 per semester, which influenced my decision to stick to a Cal State school (and Long Beach was strong in my particular field). So, yeah, not very long ago at all.
  12. Yeah, the earliest he is traded is mid-July and even that's unlikely. If Nolasco builds value, it's likely it won't come until the offseason.
  13. Yeah, exactly. All free college does is put more and more services into a community pot that becomes increasingly difficult to pay. Any push toward higher education reform needs to be accompanied by strict negotiating standards. Pretty much the exact same thing we need to do to healthcare for many of the same reasons, actually.
  14. I'd put my chances of reading it at about 80%, which is a huge step down from the 100% chance it had before the show took the story and made it better.
  15. I wouldn't be so sure of that, as Molitor has stated Duffey is a virtual lock for the rotation.
  16. This is how I feel as well. I'm worried tired vets will block upside with mediocrity.
  17. I heard Nolasco was throwing 99mph and killed a Cardinal batter with the power of his mind. Can anyone confirm?
  18. It's hard to get a read on the Twins in part because Ryan says stuff like he did in that article, which feeds the fire. They're also a closed mouth org much of the time. Personally, that quote cracked me up but without the context of the article around it, Ryan would look stodgy.
  19. Yeah, I won't cry a river if Berrios is in Rochester in August because Nolasco has a 3.00 ERA.
  20. I was hoping they'd move Santana around the diamond and it appears they're doing precisely that. Even if he doesn't hit a bunch, that kind of flexibility is useful as a 24/25th man, particularly given Santana's speed.
  21. Outside working today (on March 8th!) and caught the game on radio. Nolasco sounded pretty good.
  22. I don't know, I go back and forth on this. As a "party move", the surest bet seems to be a nomination of a centrist judge and putting the ball back into the Republican court. Make them reject a centrist and look bad to moderates. Maybe the Democrats win back the Senate as a result (unlikely but hey, not out of the question). As a "presidential move", nominating a more liberal judge would be in Obama's best interest, as it reinforces his legacy.
  23. I don't think this is an election issue because I think it will be resolved well before the election. The GOP is talking a big game right now but given the fractured nature of the party, I think they'll circle the wagons and bail out of their rhetoric after Obama nominates a moderate judge. The nomination process is a Senate issue, which means the GOP doesn't have to fight upriver against the Wild West that is the House of Representatives. Given the current situation the GOP finds itself, they're screwed if they don't accept a moderate judge from Obama. They're on the verge handing away the Presidential election and the closer they come to that point, the more likely it is Clinton will get to name a lefty-communist-pinko judge because nothing can stop her next January. The GOP will have spent all their ammunition fighting Obama's moderate nomination. I think they'll take the justice they don't like over the justice they hate.
  24. I think Arcia's best chance to receive playing time revolves around Park struggling to adapt to MLB pitching, particularly breaking balls. Which isn't a knock on Park, it shouldn't surprise anyone if it takes him some time to adjust to a new country, new league, and better pitchers.
  25. Mine was funnier. But I'll lock this thread. Continue conversation over in Seth's thread. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/21576-wetmore-twins-forward-thinking-approach-to-medical-technology/
