  1. Beat me to it. Pitchers have some finesse where they throw the ball but mistakes happen *all the time*. Lots of guys have built solid careers on just getting by on good pitches and mashing bad ones.
  2. Well, found my favorite quote of the day that sums up the situation nicely: "Gold surging is usually a sign that humans are doing something stupid."
  3. It's a fair point to make but man, the EU could crumble if things play out badly in the next few years. If a large economy stumbles, what does Germany do? They can't take on the burden of, say, Italy. And if Germany is forced to reevaluate their status, the whole thing falls to pieces. And the global economy crashes at that point. Any (further) destabilization of the EU will have dire consequences to the world.
  4. The problem, as I see it, is that the people voting for Trump aren't intellectually curious enough to even bother understanding what the implications of Britain damaging the world economy in this manner mean to us all. And while violence might come to Britain, it won't come before November. The only effects we'll see in the short-term will be economic.
  5. I don't see it being a benefit to the EU. They just lost their financial center and one of the largest export bases of the union. And god forbid if another Greece situation arises. Can Germany and France bear that weight by themselves? And what happens if it's a larger country this time around, like Italy or Spain? Never mind that Scotland is all but gone from the UK at this point. I'd put 50/50 odds on Northern Ireland doing the same.
  6. Definitely, but that blade cuts both ways. We're seeing the last gasps of white conservatism/nationalism right now. I hold out hope that America, unlike England/Wales, is diverse enough to weather the storm... Time will tell.
  7. Sure, but it's *really* unlikely the Republicans will gain traction in the Senate. The numbers are stacked heavily against them. The GOP has 24 Senate seats up for grabs, the Democrats have just 10. As for the House, the Republicans already have a significant advantage. Given the gerrymandering we've put in place over the past few decades, I don't think there's much more the GOP can do. And there are some really interesting battleground areas that simply weren't in play in past elections. Hell, John McCain is fighting hard to keep his Senate seat because so many Arizonans hate Trump. If anyone should be a shoe-in for reelection, it's a guy like McCain. It's possible Trump will hurt his party more than he helps it by bringing out the typical non-voters and nationalists. Some classic non-voting demographics could show up in force just to stop the man: primarily Hispanics, which have massive influence in some crucial states (Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, etc).
  8. Oh, I agree it's not safe but the numbers are generally on Clinton's side. But definitely not safe.
  9. There's definitely a rising tide of nationalism and the British leaving the EU is a terrible sign of things to come... But the political climate is different enough that I still think Clinton wins barring some catastrophe: 1. The electoral college can actually help the US in this situation. Clinton has all but sewn up most of the big states, which virtually guarantees her 200+ electoral votes before the election even begins. 2. The EU exit vote was won on the back of England and Wales, the two population centers of the UK. Northern Ireland and Scotland are the UK equivalents of the south and midwest. In the UK, those rural areas are more liberal (as they SHOULD be) than the US, which is strictly conservative. While the rural English and Welsh dominated the vote overall (with the largest cities largely voting to remain), that kind of uprising is diminished in America because, again, we have the electoral college. There are definitely reasons to be concerned but I think the two situations pretty different (though the same fear-mongering is at the root of both issues).
  10. This is so ****ing depressing. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-36615028 Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was "absolutely determined" to keep Scotland in the EU so a second Scottish independence referendum was now "highly likely".
  11. Yeah, it's scary. Very, very scary. What the hell, England and Wales. The Irish and Scots did their part.
  12. Unless teams are low balling offers and treating Nunez as a futility option, I probably trade the guy. He's not a .900 OPS guy - at least I don't think he is - but he has shown enough spark over the past two seasons that I don't give the guy away.
  13. At 28 years old, Kershaw has over 50 career WAR and is a first-ballot Hall of Famer under the (unofficial) Koufax Clause. Is it even a question who's the most electric pitcher today?
  14. No, I haven't read it. I haven't read a ton of fantasy... I've read quite a bit but science fiction has always been my preferred genre. I have some pretty big gaps in fantasy. I know more about fantasy from reading tabletop RPG books than novels.
  15. What can I say? A Game of Thrones is a really ****ing good book. But I also adore Tolkien so six of one, half dozen of the other.
  16. Sure, but people also watched crap like Grimm for five seasons. Not that I'm comparing ASoIaF to Grimm. Grimm was ****ing terrible while ASoIaF is quite good. I'm hard on the books but only because they're *so close* to being great. Overall, the series is quite good (A Game of Thrones is possibly the finest fantasy novel I've ever read, even better than Tolkien... and A Storm of Swords isn't far behind it) but that only makes the failures more aggravating. Being critical of something doesn't mean it's bad... If the series was truly bad, I'd say "that was ****ing horrible" and get on with my day. The fact I care about the series means it's doing something right (in this case, many things). A Storm of Swords was the last really good book written in the series. It was published in the year 2000. That's approaching 20 years ago. I love Star Wars. LOVE IT. Combined, I've seen the seven SW movies approximately 1,000 times (not exaggerating). I've read at least 75 Star Wars novels and hundreds (if not thousands) of Star Wars comics. But that doesn't mean I give Lucas a pass for the prequels. In fact, I'm harder on them because the others were so good. He convinced me to love something, to invest my emotion into his world, and then royally screwed the pooch.
  17. Then it's probably time for TR to go. This team is bad for three reasons: 1. Regression across the board. That's on the players (mostly). 2. Bad roster construction, particularly at the corners and in the bullpen. That's on the GM. 3. Young players failing to progress (and regressing almost across the board). That's on coaching and, by correlation, the GM who picks the coaches. The GM needs to take it on the chin, admit he made some serious mistakes, and correct course. That means you get what you can for the players who are causing the poor roster construction, and retool the team into something that has a chance to win baseball games in the future. If the GM won't do that, the GM shouldn't have a job.
  18. Why do you think Dozier is selling low? He's on a hot streak and his 2016 OPS is just north of his career mark (and trending upward). That's not a sell low guy, that's a guy performing at his expected level given his age.
  19. Yeah, I'm going in the direction of "I don't like 100 loss seasons, a feat the Twins have accomplished all of once in their 55 seasons of baseball".
  20. To be clear, I feel the same way. A trade should be explored but it doesn't need to happen.
  21. I'd definitely trade Abad. As we've seen with Jepsen, non-elite relievers are volatile and prone to collapse at any moment. Abad is riding high but isn't elite. Get what you can for him and move on.
  22. Yeah, maybe... But the Twins got Escobar for Liriano. He wasn't a prospect but he was young.
  23. Number of seasons Bert Blyleven had a higher ERA+ than 2012 Scott Diamond: 13 Number of seasons Bert Blyleven had a higher ERA+ than PARTIAL SEASON 2015 Tyler Duffey: 7 So, Blyleven had roughly 2600 innings better than anything Scott Diamond did in 2012 and roughly 1400 innings better than anything Duffey did in 2015 (using a 200 IP baseline for Blyleven, which is generous to Diamond/Duffey because Bert pitched 4900 innings in 22 seasons). Yeah, so this comparison is ridiculous.
