  1. Ooh, well done, sir. The humorous aspect of this post is that literally RIGHT NOW I'm listening to an Arlo Guthrie and friends tribute vinyl album to Leadbelly.
  2. On a more serious note, how similar is this season shaking out to look like 2015? Now we get to see if the front office looks different than the old. In 2015, we all knew the bullpen was a disaster but nothing was done about it until July 31st. The 2017 front office has a chance to do something in the coming weeks and they damned well better take that chance.
  3. The bullpen is fine. There's nothing to see here. Move along, folks. Again, I repeat, the bullpen is fine. That 11 run inning was an illusion. It didn't happen. The bullpen is fine.
  4. I'm not a huge Molitor fan - the Molitor we were sold and the Molitor on the field are two different things, though it has improved a bit this season - but if we're going purely on results, Molitor's teams overperformed in 2015, vastly underperformed in 2016, and are overperforming again two months into the 2017 season. I still think the guy has a ton of room for improvement but if you count 2016, then you need to count 2015 as well (and also give a nod to the surprising start to 2017).
  5. Oh, absolutely not, and I didn't mean to imply it was only the Latin kids. But the Latin kids are at an even larger disadvantage than the American kids, who at least speak the language natively and grew up in American culture.
  6. Ignoring how foolish this statement seems just a few hours after it was made, the Twins just swept the Orioles in Baltimore. Last I checked, most people agree the Orioles are a better team than the Rays.
  7. Regarding Garver, I wonder how much emphasis the new front office is placing on his receiving skills, particularly framing. I'd love to see an interview with Mitch on the subject, whether the new front office has changed his focus and in what way.
  8. Yeah. When I say "fifth starter", I really mean "guy who pitches fifth in the order but performs acceptably by MLB standards". Not handing away 20% of your games and giving your team a fighting shot to win those games with a league average guy will net several wins over the course of a season.
  9. It's absolutely possible but with the extremely small sample size we're dealing with here - three or four guys - it's equally as possible it's a result of **** luck.
  10. Pretty much. Maybe Ryan could have moved more quickly but, in the end, it probably wouldn't have mattered much because everyone keeps going down with injury.
  11. It's a smart strategy in general but doesn't really apply to Burdi. He was drafted in 2014. In 2015, he moved up to AA and was terrible. In 2016, he was injured. In 2017, he pitched for seven weeks and now he's out until 2018. There's no real promotion strategy there that gets him to MLB.
  12. And while I'll never forgive the Dixie Chicks for that abomination of a Landslide cover, their big hit was also a cover and they killed it more than a little bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw7gNf_9njs
  13. The video was directed by Spike Jonez, which is why it's so good. And the Fiona Apple Across the Universe was directed by PT Anderson, which also explains why it's so good.
  14. And if you've never heard of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, I recommend checking them out. They were a fun party staple of my college years and were one of the first genre mash bands. My favorite is their strangely compelling version of Mandy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWKMZk_mNKo And this, because Carly Simon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkaBfp1tbck
  15. And because I adore Nico, much to the chagrin of my roommates in college. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nGLqXZ-f70
  16. I never knew this existed and it makes me so ****ing happy to hear it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXh94o7tAxQ
  17. And two songs that were covered so well that most people don't even know they're covers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htobTBlCvUU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF68OyTlP4E
  18. Because no one else has posted them, I'll go ahead and post what are widely regarded to be two of the greatest covers of all time. It's really ****ing hard to upstage Bowie but Cobain managed to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fregObNcHC8 And of course, Hurt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc
  19. It's hard to pick only one but I'm going with this one today. When she slips into a heroin-like slurring of words, it so perfectly captures the essence of this song that I can't stand it, it's just so good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXE1C--WezU
  20. Given the roster and the fact the Twins are in contention, I can't call for him playing every day but he should be in the lineup at least four times a week. If Mauer wasn't playing like vintage Joe Mauer right now, I might feel differently... and there's a good chance that doesn't last, which makes the decision to play Vargas easier. But given the fact the Twins are currently rostering Grossman, Mauer, and Vargas, none of them should be an every day regular. There are enough plate appearances to get them all reps multiple times a week and optimize the lineup based on opposing pitcher. In short, I want the Twins to win as many games as possible and getting Vargas somewhat regular playing time is a good way to get there but if Grossman and/or Mauer line up better against any single starter, I'm okay with sitting Vargas that day. The same goes for Mauer and Grossman, too.
  21. It fascinated me that it took so long for teams to reach this obvious and badly needed conclusion. You've invested $3m in a 16 year old player from Latin America. He barely speaks English, is away from his family, and doesn't have a clue how to operate as an adult, much less an adult in American society. So, yeah, that kid is going to eat at McDonald's every day because of course he is.
  22. It seems to me one can advocate for Vargas playing time without making any comparisons to Sano. Vargas has made his own bed, though. He put up decent numbers overall in 2014 but posted an OPS of only .676 from August 23rd onward (141 PAs so not a miniscule sample size). In 2015, he was pretty bad overall, posting just a .626 OPS in 184 PAs. Once again, he faded at the end of 2016, posting a .670 OPS in September. My biggest problem with how the team has handled Vargas is that he seems to sit in the minors until the All-Star break. That has changed this season and because the Twins don't have any really good every day DH options, it makes all the sense in the world to see what you have in Vargas and then make the appropriate decision in the offseason. If Vargas becomes an embarrassment this season to the point you can't justify him being on the 25-man roster, there's always Park.
  23. You used RBI to compare a lead off hitter and a guy who hits behind Miguel Sano. Yeah... no.
  24. Woof. That's a month and a half of additional play.
  25. I'm still going to need to see more from Garver. He only has a combined 160 PAs in Rochester over two seasons. His OPS was .688 in A+ and .753 in AA. I hope his bat is legit but I'm still worried that what we're seeing is a mirage.
