  1. I don't see it, really. I think the one week timeline tells more than anything else. They set a deadline so quickly that it's likely nothing will be found in a case like this, which will likely require a lot of back and forth, piecing things together because the main actors aren't going to betray themselves in a single conversation. This feels like a lot of posturing to give the appearance of fair play; checking off boxes quickly to justify a terrible decision.
  2. After watching the GOP buckle under AGAIN and show that they literally have no spine when it comes to Trump and McConnell, I'm up to 90% sure he'll be confirmed. This is ridiculous. I just hope enough of the country is paying attention that the GOP pays a heavy price for it in six weeks.
  3. I have zero problems with two of the three outcomes, as they add to the action of the game. A homer is always exciting and a walk puts a runner on the bases, which adds to the tension. Strikeouts, on the other hand, are extremely boring in high numbers. It's becoming a problem across baseball. But, like chief, I have no idea what to do about it. I'm all in favor of playing "smart baseball" but this is a spectator sport; watching three guys come to the plate and miss the ball a bunch of times before sitting back down is not a good spectating experience.
  4. I listened to a large portion of his initial confirmation hearings and left pretty neutral on him overall. I didn't agree with him but considered him an acceptable candidate. He showed his true colors today and wow, they're not pretty. He seems like a pretty terrible guy.
  5. Flake is coming up soon. I hope this part is interesting and Flake doesn't just phone it in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b82Hqf6x0ZQ
  6. Honestly, separate from the sexual assault accusation, does anyone here believe one word out of Kavanaugh's mouth regarding his drinking habits as a teenager? He's so obviously lying up there.
  7. Typical Klobuchar. By the book and I nodded off at one point.
  8. Graham is actually killing it up there. Had the GOP been smarter about this, they would have let the Senators be indignant on Kavanaugh's behalf and told Kavanaugh to keep it respectful.
  9. Durbin is pinning him down HARD on the FBI investigation right now. Well done.
  10. I don't know how it should have been handled on a step-by-step basis, but some notification should have gone to the committee. How one goes about that and the process? Dunno, but that's well outside my scope of knowledge. Sitting on it was the one solution I consider extremely wrong and probably the worst route to take.
  11. Yep. I mean, to be clear, I'd like to yell over Feinstein some time. It sounds like fun. But in this case, it's a terrible decision.
  12. And he just started yelling over Feinstein. Oy. This is going to hell in a handbasket.
  13. I don't see how that opening statement plays any way but badly outside of the conservative base. The way he sat there and raged made me dislike him more by the minute. After seeing Ford's quiet, earnest testimony, to see it countered by what felt like Entitled White Male Rage only made it seem more likely that Kavanaugh committed that assault all those years ago. No empathy, no reservation about this terrible situation, just pure rage about how people were treating HIM so badly. Almost exactly what you'd expect from a privileged private high school student who's all growed up now, actually...
  14. Got it. No problem.
  15. Just skimmed but the first article mentions arbitration, not free agency. So the Twins could have controlled Mauer but they would have gone year-to-year in arb.
  16. I'm starting to lean that direction as well. We'll see if Kavanaugh & Co can pull something out of the hat this afternoon but right now, Ford's testimony was convincing and earnest. It's not looking good for Kavanaugh.
  17. I'm pretty sure Ryan's deal only bought out one FA season. 2004 + six seasons = 2010 free agent, right?
  18. I included Pujols mostly for a monetary and age comparison, not performance level. Pujols was pretty obviously the better player.
  19. It makes you wonder what his capability would have been as a DH in the American League.
  20. My agreement with Grassley on this singular issue does not mean I think he has behaved nobly in the past.
  21. Good points. It shouldn't be overlooked just how bad he was at first base in a league that required him to take the field every day.
  22. Ah, I forgot the timeline on that contract, which is where the absurdity really lays. The contract was signed at the beginning of the 2010 season but didn't kick in until 2012, at which point Howard turned into a pumpkin. I forgot it was an extension signed well in advance of its terms (I knew it was an extension, didn't remember it was nearly two full years before it kicked in).
  23. Grassley opening the hearing by taking Feinstein to task without using her name. And he should. She handled this terribly. It's not a political piece to be played, the letter (maybe sans name) should have been given to the committee immediately, not six weeks later at the eleventh hour.
  24. This take doesn't jibe with the economics of baseball at the time. Mauer was 28 years old when his first contract expired and he got a seven year, $185m deal as a 27 year old. The following year, a 32 year old Pujols signed for $240m. Prince Fielder, a vastly inferior player to Mauer, signed for $215m. Another vastly inferior player, Ryan Howard, signed an absurd $125m contract despite not being a good player when the contract was signed. The year Mauer was due to be a FA, Boston (who needed a catcher at the time) signed Carl Crawford for $142m. Again, Crawford wasn't even close to the player Mauer was at the time. Two years later, Jacoby Ellsbury (lol) got over $150m from the Yankees. The year Mauer was due to hit free agency, both the Yankees and Red Sox needed a catcher. Both teams weren't hesitating in the slightest to sign $125m+ contracts to players significantly inferior to Mauer (and usually older, to boot). Even if you're pessimistic, Mauer would have received his $185m on the free agency market after 2010 and probably received significantly more than that, as he posted yet another typical "prime Joe Mauer season", with a WAR in the 5-6 win range.
