  1. Onay, so this comment is probably inappropriate and I shouldn’t respond, but... damn, it’s funny.
  2. Am I the only one who doesn’t get the love for The Good Place? It’s a show I want to love but the character chemistry is so inferior and awkward to Parks & Rec that I struggle to care much about it. It's a fine show but I don't get why people are raving about it.
  3. I think it’s more nuanced than “nothing”. I also think it’s so minute and unquantifiable that it’s uselsss to argue about it. I don’t think it’s coincidence that Showalter always overperforms for a couple of years... and then unpeforms for a couple of years before getting the axe. Or that Gardenhire had a solid run of overperformance before collapsing. Or that Molitor has been up and down, as weird as that sounds to say. Or that Maddon is almost *always* good. How can we quantify that as outsiders? Um... yeah. We can’t. So we should evaluate the themes, ideas, and styles of managers... and STFU about the rest because we’re talking out of our asses.
  4. Oh, definitely, but America has a pretty solid track record of hating whatever party is in power. And we haven’t had an election since the GOP took control of the entire government.
  5. However this played out, I thought it would be more galvanizing to the losers. We'll see if that's the way it goes.
  6. You don't. You find someone who can appeal to the ~70% of the country that isn't insane and let the fringes on both sides continue to be insane, ignoring them entirely. That's the way it has worked up to this point. The country didn't just suddenly go insane, it has fragmented for some pretty lousy reasons, which has allowed the fringes to take a larger portion of control than their population warrants. If we had a parliamentary system, we'd be in much better shape because one party wouldn't need to capture 50% of the population by catering to the crazies.
  7. No, I'd prefer actual leadership.
  8. And as bad as things are now, we're not even close to the acrimony of the mid 19th century (which ultimately led to war largely because of, again, ineffectual leadership leading up to Lincoln, who inherited a country that basically needed to be slapped around for a few years).
  9. It's simply impossible. How many countries? A half dozen? Because how do you connect Illinois (and Minnesota) with the coasts? How do you connect the coasts together? What do you do with places like Michigan and Wisconsin, who float back and forth between conservative and liberal? What we need are political solutions. Both sides have done a piss-poor job of even proposing solutions that impact more than half the nation. It doesn't have to be even half as hard as we're making it right now.
  10. On a team with Buxton, Kepler, Rosario, Cave, and Austin, I'm not sure where you expect to play Grossman so he can get those leadoff PAs.
  11. It's not a "rule" in the traditional sense of a sporting rule... it's a negotiated labor policy with the union.
  12. I so hope this happens if only because one of the small highlights of the past two years has been watching 5% of the GOP thwart the other 95%.
  13. No, "we" didn't. Some did. I think Mientkiewicz would be a horrible pick as manager given the direction baseball has gone over the past two decades. Someone in this thread referenced more quotes why that's the case. He doesn't value analytics in an age when analytics should be a part of almost every conversation regarding a player.
  14. This thread predates even BYTO by four years. It was the old ESPN boards that were dissolved around 2008 or so.
  15. I believe my first entry in that thread was: Carrot Top > Joe Mays
  16. Oh, god. That game was 16 years ago?
  17. Nope, it's on Molitor. Yeah, he could have used better talent but so could every manager. If you burn out your two best pitchers by the end of May, your depth just got worse. Make the best of what you have. Molitor burned through pitchers at a rate that virtually guaranteed a shoddy bullpen by midseason because he'd run all his good pitchers into the ground already.
  18. This is what drove me nuts about Molitor. He'd show flashes of innovation with the lineup and wasn't afraid to mix things up to find results. Then he'd call on Addison Reed for the fifth time in six days later that game. Just a wildly inconsistent manager in very baffling ways.
  19. I also thought he improved but that bullpen usage... yikes. That alone might have been enough to give him the axe. A manager simply cannot tax half his bullpen that much and ignore the other half of the bullpen for 162 games. It's irresponsible and short-sighted.
  20. Whoa. I thought he'd get one more season. Not that I dislike the move, just a bit surprised by it.
  21. *checks calendar* It's October 2nd and the postseason hasn't even properly begun yet. So how is it selfish that Mauer hasn't decided what he's going to do when the leaves haven't even fallen from the trees yet? Give the guy some time to reflect on what is an enormous decision, for crying out loud. If it was January 1st, you might have a point... but not at the beginning of October. The Twins can't even start the offseason for another 4-5 weeks anyway. None of this matters right now.
  22. That article does a hell of a job of breaking down how he's obviously lying about his drinking in high school and college.
  23. In a chamber chock full of vile human beings, Steve King might be the worst of the bunch.
  24. Having him come out for a single pitch with his catching gear on was... moving.
  25. I actually understand that part. He said he’d watch it later. I wouldn’t want to go into a testimony like that emotionally unstable, either angry or ashamed. Though Brett seemed pretty emotionally unstable anyway so there you go.
