A Quiet Place is a fantastic film that needs to be experienced, not only watched. I told everyone I know to skip the theatre and watch it in a dark, quiet room. I lucked out and caught a matinee with about ten people in the theatre. It was outstanding. Definitely not overrated, simply a film that doesn’t really shine with a bunch of other people around you. (but it’s not a “scary” movie in the sense that it horrifies you, it’s a suspense film that relies on the lack of sound to build fear)

Best sci-fi show since BSG. Maybe even better. It’s phemomenal.

Rewatching Band of Brothers for what is probably the 20th time but first in 5-6 years. And it's still probably the greatest thing ever put on television. Even after all this time, it's simply magnificent.

Article: The Gib is Up, Kyle Is For Real
Brock Beauchamp replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm so glad to see Gibson emerge as a legit starting pitcher. For years, I lobbied that he still had untapped potential, as his overall career IP (combined MiLB/MLB) was extremely low for a pitcher his age (drafted out of college, TJS, multiple small injuries). But even I had soured on him by the start of 2017. It's good to see someone take him under their wing and get with 21st century baseball, eliminating the mantra "low in the zone" and just letting the guy hurl the ball at the plate with his best pitches. -
Article: Lance Lynn Was Worth The Wait
Brock Beauchamp replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed but given the way he's trending and the circumstances that likely led to his initial struggles (late start to season), I think it's more likely than not he ends up have a decent season by his standards once you adjust to AL expectations. -

If the Twins want Escobar, I suspect they'll have more than a fair chance to keep him. Escobar is a hard player to predict and frankly, I'm more interested in keeping him if his OPS is .800 than if his OPS is .900 at season's end. I think he can sustain an .800 OPS for awhile but am incredibly skeptical of him holding at .900 for a prolonged period of time, which means I don't want to bid for him after a .900 OPS season.

Extending Escobar now is the literal definition of buying high. It's unlikely he continues this torrid pace all season and you get to affix a QO to him if need be, which gives you negotiating leverage in November. Just ride it out, see what happens.

Agreed. I’ve been as hard on Molitor over his bullpen usage as anybody but didn’t have a problem with how he managed the game last night.

Berrios has been allowed to go deep into games quite often and he didn’t have his best stuff last night, not even close. You thank the guy for his effort and let the bullpen take it from there.

Article: Trying to Get a Reed on Addison
Brock Beauchamp replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Inherited runners are really important but as a stat, it's pretty flawed. If you inherit a runner on first with 1-2 outs and let them score, that's bad pitching. If you inherit runners on second and third with no outs and both score, that's not really on the reliever (maybe you can make a case that the runner on second should only score ~50% of the time but the runner on third is a gimme). It's not terribly different than judging a starter on his win total. Sure, the outliers are pretty solid indications of good/bad (if a starter wins 20, he's very good... if he loses 15+, he's pretty bad) but the fat middle part of the bell curve is pretty hard to judge on that stat alone. -
Mientkiewicz is a manager born into the wrong era. In today's game, his outright disdain for analytics does not make him a fit with two-thirds of MLB teams. Thankfully for him, Detroit is one of those teams that doesn't seem to care. I wanted to like Mientkiewicz the manager because I liked Mientkiewicz the player. I have no use for Mienkiewicz the manager at the MLB level. If he can teach fundamentals and win at the MiLB level, good for him.... but I have zero interest in seeing him at the MLB level where the game has evolved and the managerial demands are different.

If Santana is truly back and ready to pitch at a high level, I hate to say this but the odd man out is... Fernando Romero. If the team flounders over the next six weeks, you offload Santana, Lynn, and a few others and recall Fernando. But right now, Romero is not helping the team win many baseball games. And right now, the front office has about five weeks to decide whether to buy or sell at the deadline. You need as many wins as possible during that time and letting Romero work through some struggles isn't aligned with that goal. And if Santana doesn't move the needle, then you sell a bunch of players and let Romero pitch through the second half of the season.

I went into this offseason thinking I'd hate the rotation and love the offense. Instead, I love the rotation and absolutely despise the offense, as it's one of the most frustrating offenses I've ever seen in regards to its ability versus performance. Baseball is weird.

Article: Week in Review: DEFCON 1

Question about WPA: is it score +/- neutral? For example, does it care whether the team is ahead by three runs or behind by three runs, provided the differential is three runs? Curious about Magill and whether his WPA is hurt because he pitches from behind regularly. Also, it's friggin' ridiculous that Magill is leading the bullpen in WPA.- 85 replies

Article: Miguel Sano Optioned to Ft. Myers
Brock Beauchamp replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
People are overthinking this. If an MLB player is sent to Ft Myers, that means there is probably something going on that doesn't involve swinging a bat at a baseball. Ft Myers is the Twins' home away from home. It's where the Twins have their primary training and medical facilities and where everyone goes to rehab. That doesn't mean Sano is injured; they could be concerned about his diet, training, or mental state, amongst other things. But it's highly unlikely this is purely an on-field baseball decision. Otherwise, Sano might get slapped down to Chattanooga at most. He won't learn much, if anything, against Florida League pitching. -
Sure, but that’s a gamble you’re going to take either way and I’d like to protect any postseason performance more than a couple of mid season starts.

I mostly agree with this but I'd still try to work in some breaks around the ASG out of caution. Because if his arm fatigues in September and the Twins have climbed back into this thing, it will really hurt to remove Romero from the stretch run and possibly the postseason. Two or three games skipped in July and August could be important insurance for September and October. You don't even have to skip that many starts, in all likelihood. If you use creative off-day management and the ASG, you can probably push out his starts to 7-9 days a couple of times, effectively skipping one start.

This was pretty easily a top five "most annoying game I've ever watched" experience. What a terrible game past the first inning. Just pathetic and embarrassing performances from everyone not named Berrios.

As much as Realmuto looks good on the Twins, no way do I pay the price of Lewis plus prospects for him. In this situation, I'm totally fine with the Twins aiming a bit lower with Ramos or someone less than Realmuto but controllable for a couple of seasons. If you can get Realmuto for Gordon plus prospects, I'm still a little hesitant but open to discussion (it depends on the rest of the prospects involved and how many).

As I mentioned a week or two ago, I think the loss of Castro actually hurts Garver. Playing ~50 games and chatting up one of the better framers and receivers in the league 100 other days of the season could be a boon for Garver's game going forward. Because as it stands now, I wince when I see Garver in the starting lineup because I know I'm going to suffer through at least 4-5 really ugly catches in the game.

Oh no, I don't think they could get away with a flat rate. But if you can offer $7m instead of $2m and then $11m instead of $6m, you can get the final couple of years for maybe $15m per instead of $20m per. Do that three times and it's an extra player you can extend. Normally, that would be hard for a team to pull off but the Twins have about $20-25m committed for next season and zero dollars committed for the following season.
