  1. Okay, so a $14m team option with a $3m buyout. Correct?
  2. Am I being obtuse or does the bolded make no sense? "Three years, $30M. Salaries totaling $27M in first three years, then a $14M club option with a $3M club option for a fourth."
  3. Yeah, I doubt they get more than one FA year of Berrios but I’d take that, especially if he allows the team to front load the extension and only pay $12-15m in that final year.
  4. If they manage to drop $20m+ on extensions to existing players this offseason, that takes some sting out of their big swings and misses at basically every free agent worth mentioning. Good signing, now do it some more.
  5. Eh, I can’t twist this offseason into a positive. The Twins are coming off a 101 win season, yet my excitement level is barely higher than the dark years of the past decade. That’s pretty dismal.
  6. The front office said they were pursuing impact pitching and then missed on literally every free agent pitcher of note. They deserve every (rational) ill word written about them because they failed to live up to their own promises, never mind the common sense necessity of the moves they said they were going to make (and didn't). Whether it's repetitive or not, that's the reality of the situation. If they go out and trade for Price or Gray tomorrow, we're done. All that bitching was (mostly) for naught. But the fact they signed both Bailey *and* Hill makes that move quite unlikely. These deals feel like someone admitting defeat and fans should be pretty damned mad about it.
  7. Upon further reflection, it’s because signing both is an indication that there will be no additional pitching acquisitions.
  8. Somehow I’m more irritated that the Twins got both Bailey and Hill than if they had signed only one of them.
  9. If the Twins went out and got someone like Price or Gray THEN make these signings, whatever. They’re fine. But the visuals on this deal in the here and now make me want to throw up. This is bordering on completely unacceptable territory and fans have every right to be furious.
  10. I want a pitcher but given the market, I'd float something like a 2/$60m contract to Donaldson and see if he bites. Overpay for shorter years, see if he's interested. Players often overestimate their ability to not age (though obviously, their agents steer the other direction) so go that angle and see what happens.
  11. Odorizzi and Pineda are just fine second and third moves. Now go make a real move for someone at or above Berrios’ level.
  12. Woof. You'd rather offer Ryu one less year for the same money than Wheeler? No thanks. I like Ryu, I think he could be a good get for 2/$35m but the dude is old and he isn't the type of pitcher who will age well because guys who are throwing 91mph have no margin for aging.
  13. Ah, yes, then I agree. Sano’s offensive potential is enormous.
  14. I kept your entire post intact because I think your point has merit, but... the bolded? Nelson Cruz says hi. Jorge Polanco says hi. Mitch Garver says hi. These are all players who were effing METAL in clutch situations; the problem is that many of them limped into the postseason and we haven't seen the best of them in the times that matter most.
  15. It's unfortunate that you think this forum is unwelcoming to an "oldtimer", but you also have to realize that a lot of "oldtimers" tend to dig their heels in and refuse to accept the changing game. If you want to know what the stats mean, please, just ask. There are loads of posters and writers who will be happy to explain what they mean and why they're significant to the game.
  16. While I don't agree with parts of it, this is a really well thought-out and prepared argument about how to approach the 2020 season. Really well done, Tom. Super well done. You convinced me on more than a few points.
  17. I'm giving Boone some credit (and I always give Cashman credit, he's a legendary GM), all I'm saying is that the Yankees are in a much better position to rally using a myriad of resources because they have near-unlimited resources. Almost anything they don't do is a self-imposed decision.
  18. My point is that an excess of riches allows the Yankees to have the best of all worlds. A team like the Rays or A's would have been unrecoverable with that number of injuries in play.
  19. Boone did a fine job but it's a hell of a lot easier to "patch together" a season when your front office goes out and picks up a player like Encarnacion because of said injuries.
  20. I'm 100% on board with the Twins retaining Gibson if they're confident the disease is in check and will remain in check. But I'm skeptical that is the case. But even so, if you retain Odorizzi and pick up two more good pitchers, I'd absolutely give Gibson a $5-7m flyer and see what happens.
  21. Ask Willie Hernandez how much his MVP means to him. It's a single-season accolade. Deserved or not, it's an important measure of personal success.
  22. I won't argue with Rocco getting the nod but it's always a disappointment to see the managers of teams like the A's and Rays get so little love for what they've done while spending so little. While ownership and the front office dictate spending and roster spaces respectively, the manager is the guy on the field who has to make it work and Cash and Melvin did a phenomenal job with not a lot of resources. While it would have irritated the **** out of me to see Boone get the award, I would have tipped my cap to Cash or Melvin had they won.
  23. It's not entirely fair to remove pitcher PAs because generally, the worst batter also sits in the ninth spot in the AL. The difference between AL#9 and a pitcher is stark, but the numbers are still slightly shifted. I'm not knocking your methodology because it's important to remove pitcher PAs, just pointing that out. Inversely, Wheeler has better career stats away from Citi so home park likely doesn't help him at all. Odorizzi is a wildly underrated pitcher, which is why I want to keep him at almost any cost, but he's also coming off a career year. Wheeler has been good for quite some time while Odorizzi was expected to be a 3/4 going into 2019 and performed more like a 2/3 through the season. I'm not sure we should expect that going forward but he *should* be a better pitcher than what we counted on going into last season. So, yeah, Wheeler isn't amazing compared to Odo but we didn't expect to get that Odo either, so it's something of a loaded point to make.
