July 2023 Update
Brent Headrick wasn't a particularly well known prospect before being added to the 40-man roster last offseason, but he's made a name for himself with Twins fans, stepping in from Triple-A on occasion with some helpful efforts as a long man out of the bullpen. The left-hander has also thrown well at Triple-A, where he had a 3.81 ERA and 60-to-11 K/BB ratio through 50 innings. Headrick's upside as a prospect is capped, to be sure, but there's always value in a healthy and poised left-hander who can throw strikes with a mid-90s fastball and decent breaking ball. -NN
Biography
Headrick grew up in Illinois and went to Reed-Custer High School in Braidwood, Illinois. He was a star on the school’s baseball, basketball, and golf teams. The 6-6 forward knocked down a school-record 127 three-pointers as a junior. He was all-state his final two seasons. He was on the golf team for two years. But it was on the baseball diamond that he shined brightest. In his three years of high school, he went 27-5 and posted an ERA under 2.00 all three years.
He decided to stay close to home for college. He made the 72-mile trek southwest from Braidwood to Normal, IL, home of the Illinois State Redbirds. He was a teammate for two seasons with Brewers infielder Owen Miller, and all three seasons with fellow pitcher Jeff Lindgren. He made eight starts as a freshman and 15 starts as a sophomore. Combined, he went 5-9. He spent that summer with the Wisconsin Woodchucks in the Northwoods League and posted a 2.63 ERA with 35 strikeouts to just six walks in 27 1/3 innings. He had a strong junior season in 2019. He went 9-3 with a 3.47 ERA. In 16 starts and 96 innings, he had 31 walks with 115 strikeouts. At Illinois State, his head coach was former Twins catcher Steve Holm.
The Twins drafted the lanky lefty with their ninth-round pick in 2019 and sent him to Elizabethton for the rest of that season. He became the fifth Twins draft pick to debut from that draft (Wallner, Steer, Varland, Julien), and Casey Legumina was called up a day later. That’s more impressive when you consider that none of them played (or was even on the development list) in 2020.
In 2021, he was limited by some shoulder issues, but in 2022, he really had a big breakout season. He began the season in Cedar Rapids where he made 15 starts and went 8-2 with a 2.34 ERA. He moved up to Wichita and made 10 appearances (8 starts) and went 2-3 with a 4.81 ERA. That may not sound impressive, until you consider his first game with the Wind Surge. Varland started and went the first four innings. Headrick them came on He gave up homers to the first two batters he faced and a third later that half-inning. In the sixth, he gave up another home run. In the seventh, he gave up one more home run. After giving up five runs in 2 1/3 innings, his Double-A ERA simply wasn’t going to look great. However, over his final nine appearances, he was a very respectable 2-2 with a 3.54 ERA. He had 57 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 40 2/3 innings. He was a strikeout machine and made himself and easy choice to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason.
So, what is it that has made Brent Headrick so successful? He has typically been able to avoid real hard contact. He has a four-seam fastball that averages about 92 mph, but we saw him as high as 95 on occasion. He also has a really good slider in the low-80s that he has been able to get a lot of whiffs with, especially when it darts out of and below the zone. He will throw more change ups as a starter. Headrick showed he can work out of the bullpen as a lefty specialist or a multi-inning option and primarily get by with two pitches. The Twins will likely want him available to make starts at some point, so for now, they will continue to develop him as a starter. - SS
