Ryan Walker - 2016

Ryan Walker
DOB: 3-26-92 in Arlington, Texas
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 157
Position: 2B/3B/OF
Bats: Left
Throws: Right

Shane's 2016 Prospect Rank: unranked

2016 statistics (Chattanooga, after promotion):

74 PA, .323/.392/.385 (.777), two triples, seven walks, 11 strikeouts, five steals, two times caught stealing

Walker has somewhat inexplicably moved up to AA after dismal seasons in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Yet, he has done well in his brief stint in AA.

And this makes you wonder . . . if pushing certain players makes their performance get better, why not do something similar with actual prospects? The Twins seem to really take their time with prospects initially. They mess around all the way through A+. Why not push the better players quickly to higher levels of competition? It is working for Walker.

.280/.350/.342 (.693) in Chattanooga this year. Contact hitter with good speed. He is worthy of sticking about Chattanooga next year as a super utility player.

2016 Summary

After a quick promotion to AA, Walker was able to post solid numbers. There, he had 338 plate appearances, with a line of .274/.349/.355, and 10 doubles, four triples, two homers, 32 walks, 63 strikeouts, 13 steals, and 5 times caught stealing. He did this while playing 2b, 3b, and LF.

2017 Outlook

Another 338 AA plate appearances are warranted before thinking about promotion to AAA. If Walker gains on his 2016 production in AA in 2017, he might be a pleasant surprise for the organization.
