Miller: Sweeney ready to re-start baseball career

Star Tribune's Phil Miller wrote a nice article on Outfielder Ryan Sweeney. The Cedar Rapids native took last year off after being released to regroup, to heal up.

“I had a couple of teams interested in signing me — even a month into the season, I still got an offer — but I just thought, ‘I need to rest my body,’ ” said Sweeney, whose career with the White Sox, Athletics, Red Sox and Cubs has been interrupted by serious knee, hamstring, rib and foot injuries. “I could have done the whole Triple-A thing, but I just decided it would be better to heal up and come back this year.”

He's likely a long-shot to make the roster out of spring training unless there are some unforeseen circumstances, but don't be surprised completely if he surfaces with the Twins sometime in 2016.

Sweeney is 31 years old.

Who's most likely to break camp with the Twins, or get called up during the season?

Arcia (80%)

Santana (70%)

Sweeney (40%)

Benson (15%)

Mastro (10%)

Punto (?)

What are your odds?

Arcia/Santana: 99%

Sweeney: 10%

Benson: 1%

Mastro: 2%

Punto: 3%

I really hope nothing allows any of Sweeney/Benson/Mastroianni to see any major league time with the Twins this year.

Sweeney, Mastroianni or Benson will likely be up to start the season IF Buxton starts in AAA. Arcia and Santana are givens unless they get traded or something.

Even if Buxton starts in AAA, Santana would start in CF and you would have Rosario to back him up in center and then Arcia and Nunez as the two bench OFers. I guess it will depend on how they play in Spring too (like if Sweeney hits .350 or something).

Hopefully Buxton just takes the job and we don't have to worry about those types of players taking up roster spots and playing time.

I think Buxton takes the job. But never know.

Sweeney, Mastroianni and Benson were signed to keep Rochester competitive and for short-term and/or emergency fill-in at the major league level.
