Twins get 2nd round competitive balance pick

not really a fan of the current formula / eligibility rules on this concept, but at least they got one......

It's an interesting way to try to keep the smaller markets involved.  It looks like the Cardinals and Royals didn't get one this year, which I think is the first time neither team has got one since this system was put in place.

I'm curious if you had any ideas on how to improve the system.  I don't think it's a perfect formula, especially given that teams like the Cardinals (which never seem to really have cash flow issues) can get these picks.

I don't think it takes into account tv and radio money, does it? If it does, then I don't know the answer frankly.

I do think it is an interesting idea to allow playoff teams that succeed despite smaller revenue streams to be in this lottery. In some ways, I like rewarding them. I MIGHT not let them ever get a 1st rounder maybe.....

I think it is an unnecessarily complicated way to mostly do nothing.  But it is only 12 picks in the draft instead of the 20+ picks that used to be awarded for FA comp that actually benefited the large market teams so it is an improvement.

The one really nice thing about it is that the picks are tradeable and that might create a system where all draft picks are tradeable in the future.

Yes. I understand why mlb wanted this in the past, but with hard pools this is long past due.

I thought it took all revenue into account, but I could be wrong.  These picks are not just determined by revenues though, they also take into account the teams with the smallest market size.  Some of those teams overlap.

So, St. Louis, for example doesn't have a bottom 10 revenue, but they are considered to have one of the 10 smallest markets.

I think it's a lottery of those teams that get a chance for the comp A round.  Any team that gets money from the revenue sharing is in the draft for the comp B round.  At least, that's my understanding.

I guess I don't have a good idea of how to fix this either.  It's supposed to add more parity into the game.  I don't think that the system has really been around long enough to show that it does/doesn't do that though.

The revenues that aren't included would be those of satellite businesses of the team owners that also benefit from the MLB team.  For example the TV contract is included but the TV contract could be underpaid by the cable network that the team also owns.  The cable network earnings aren't subject to sharing.

This is nothing more than pork barrel politics where the small market teams were given a benefit so that they would go along with a system that ultimately does benefit large market teams.
