Severino Leads Saints Past Indianapolis 7-6, Split Series, Roster Update

Saint Paul, Minnesota - Yunior Severino continued his massive week at the plate going 3-for-4. The Saints had two triples in the sixth inning that helped the Saints to overcome the Indianapolis Guardians by a score of 7-6 and split the six-game series. The Saints improved to 69-50 on the season, which is second place in the International League West. 

Andrew Stevenson walked to lead off the first for the Saints. Next, he stole second base, which was his 40th stolen base of the season. Stevenson got himself all the way around the bases advancing to third on a wild pitch by Guardians pitcher Braeden Ogle. Finally, Trevor Larnach hit a sacrifice fly to left, Stevenson came into score and the Saints took a 1-0 lead. 

In the second, Yunior Severino hit a solo home run, which gave the Saints a 2-0 lead. 

In the third, Vinny Capra doubled, and Nick Gonzales walked. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Vapra scored when Miguel Andujar grounded out. Canaan Smith-Njigba tied the game at two with an RBI single. Indianapolis took a 3-2 lead when Aaron Shackelford doubled and a 4-2 lead on an RBI single from Ryan Vilade. That knocked Saints starter Randy Dobnak out of the game. Austin Schulfer entered the game. Shackelford ended up scoring on a throwing error by Schulfer on the pickoff attempt. Indianapolis took a 5-2 lead. 

Randy Dobnak worked 2.1 innings allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned). He struck out three and walked two. 

Severino hit his fourth home run of the season in the fourth. The Saints trailed 5-3. 

The Saints broke through in the sixth. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. tripled, and Jair Camargo was hit-by-the-pitch to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Severino singled, which was his third RBI of the afternoon. This put the Saints within one. Next, Gilberto Celestino tripled, which gave the Saints a 6-5 lead. Anderw Stevenson hit an RBI single and ended up at third base due to a fielding error by Vilade in center field. St. Paul had a 7-5 lead at the end of six. 

Indianapolis got one back in the eighth. With two outs, Grant Koch, Vinny Capra, and Nick Gonzales all singled. Gonzales' single brought home Koch and Indianapolis trailed 7-6.

Kody Funderburk pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Saints to lock down a 7-6 St. Paul win. Funderburk picked up his fifth save of the season. 

Andrew Bechtold worked a scoreless inning for the Saints on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the game on Sunday the Minnesota Twins made a roster move. Oliver Ortega was recalled by the Minnesota Twins, and Jordan Balazovic was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul. 

The Saints are off on Monday before beginning a six-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers (Kansas City Royals). Game one of a six-game series between the St. Paul Saints and Omaha Storm Chasers is on Tuesday night at Werner Park in Omaha, Nebraska. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Both teams are TBA. The game can be seen on MiLB.TV, and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
