You Never Forget Your First

So, blogging...   Huh, so this is what it's like? Seems a lot like typing practice. Well, I guess I shouldn't judge. I've been blogging for 43 seconds now - maybe I should give it a little more time.   Or maybe not, since everyone has already projected the rest of Frankie Liriano's career from his first 17 spring training pitches, I shouldn't worry about projecting my blogging career from the first 17 words.   So what will this blog be like?   1) Intermittent - I have a full-time job and a cou

Clubhouse Pin Drops.

Yesterday, a comment on 1500ESPN by "Everyday" Eddie Guardado took Patrick Reusse and Jim Souhan into a brief rant against the quiet, introverted Twins clubhouse. My first instinct was to write it off as being just another "back in my day we were tougher and manlier" speech.   Then, I started thinking about the relationship between clubhouse dynamics and communication, like I blogged about earlier this week. It seemed to me Olson's concept of cohesiveness applies to this situation.   If the tea

Twins Prospects: Where to fit them all?

The Twins have several highly-touted prospects that are currently climbing through their system. The prospect that is most likely to make his debut this year is Brian Dozier, who is a solid middle infielder who took this year in the Minors and turned it into his breakout season.   Unfortunately for the Twins, they have several other highly-touted prospects that are all playing the same positions. For Chris Herrmann, this isn't a problem, as he could finally be Drew Butera's nightmare as he is a

Shipley: Terry Ryan on Danny Valencia

John Shipley had an article this morning regarding Danny Valencia and shared some of the spillage of information gathered from general manager Terry Ryan in his blog.   Ryan on how he handles players:     On his defensive struggles:     On Valencia's clubhouse presence:   On Valencia's future:     I've certainly heard from a few front office members who have not quite embraced Valencia's "swagger" attitude. That doesn't exactly fit the Twins mold. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a

Introduction and Off-Season : Ryan O'Rourke

First off I would like to give a thank you to Seth Stohs and the rest of the Twins Daily writers for giving me the opportunity to post here about my life as a Minor League player in the Twins organization.   My name is Ryan O'Rourke. I was born, grew up and still currently live in Worcester, Massachusetts, I also attended Merrimack College which is about 45 minutes away from my hometown. I graduated Merrimack College and was fortunate enough to be selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 13th r

Possible Replacements if Morneau Goes Down

The entire state of Minnesota wants Justin Morneau to return to his MVP form. After hearing Morneau talk last week, it sounds like he will never be the same. The last few season he has been affected by various injuries including a severe concussion. He has undergone four surgeries since the end of the 2011 season. We would all love to see the M & M boys back in the lineup. The Twins are much better with Morneau in the lineup, but the reality is that he may not be around for much longer. Poss

Did Joe Mauer -- and Twins Fans -- Need His 2011 Season to Happen?

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6xAQtqLanLE/T04jPTt5KqI/AAAAAAAAALY/QFZxCYIYvL4/s320/Mauer.bmp [Originally posted at my blog, Twins Fan From Afar]   It's often said that balance is necessary in order to understand the universe. How can you define "hot" without understanding "cold," contemplate "good" without a concept of "evil," or truly appreciate a nice Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon without having a few boxes of Franzia wine in your past?     Joe Mauer has spoiled the Twins and their fans for much

Beware of the Pohlad's five year plan!

Fellow Twins fans, I can not understand how all of you and especially our ridiculously non-critical Minnesota media misses it, but can anyone see the five year plan the Pohlad crew has in store for you? Lets start by reminding everyone that both the Pohlad boys flat out admitted while pops was alive that they had no interest what so ever in operating or owning the Minnesota Twins......But then the money machine that runs the blood of the Pohlad's pointed out the cash cow that could be achieved i

My Journey to the Minnesota Twins

Blog Post #1 By: Aaron Bates Follow my daily Spring Training journey on twitter at: @A33bates   Hey Guys!   I'm very excited that Seth Stohs asked me to do a regular blog throughout spring training. It's truly one of my favorite times of year as I love getting back on the field and seeing my teammates after a long off season. I will be talking about a variety of things through my blogging, but sorry this won't be a place for any inside scoop or gossip. It's more about the game on and off the fie

Minor League - Introduction to Dakota Watts

Hey everybody, Seth Stohs turned me on to this site. I am going to try my hardest to make sure to get on and blog about the daily life of a Minor Leaguer playing in the Twins organization. I will write as much as possible, hopefully once a week.   I’d like to start off my introducing myself and giving you all a little background on myself. I’m Dakota Watts, born and raised in Oroville, California, son of Buddy and Brenda Watts, and am currently 24 years old.   A little baseball background. As a

Do the Twins Need to Spend More Money?

Many Twins fans have expressed disappointment in the Twins lack of spending. Do the Twins need to spend more money? The answer to this is no. The 2012 payroll is sitting at roughly 100 million, which ranks among the top in all of baseball. Also, spending more money does not always translate to wins, for example the 2011 Twins. The Twins will now have the flexibility to make a trade at the trading deadline and have the chance to acquire more talent. Finally, when Terry Ryan was in his first stint

Why the Twins Will Win in 2012

The Minnesota Twins will win the AL Central in 2012. They have not made the flashiest moves this offseason, but they have made the right ones. While the Detroit Tigers get all of the attention, the Twins will fly under the radar. Under Ron Gardenhire, the Twins have become accustomed to being overlooked. The Twins need to keep in mind that history repeats itself. The Tigers will not win because they lack a solid defense. The old saying is "defense wins championships" and that's exactly what the

Breaking Minor League News: New Britain Rock Cats Have Been Sold

Position Battles: The Hitters

Here we are, less than a week into full Twins spring training workouts. Games don’t even start for a couple of days. It’s time to start talking position battles, right? It appears to me that there are actually very few positions that are up for grabs at this stage of camp. Of course, as injuries mount through spring training, more position battles can spring up, but for now, there are a lot of givens on the roster.   Hitters: Joe Mauer, Ryan Doumit, Justin Morneau, Alexi Casilla, Danny Valencia

College draft prospect weekly recap...

This will be the debut post in what I hope to be a weekly column updating the performances and scouting reports on prospects I believe are/should be on the Twins radar. I hope to have a high school round up posted later this week, but for now let’s start with the college prospects.   Stats from Feb. 17th-26th   Mark Appel has dominated much of the Twins draft coverage so far this winter and rightfully so. In his most recent start, he turned in possibly his best career performance going 7+ inning

Butera? Solved!

The Butera problem goes like this - Drew Butera is both horrible at hitting baseballs and beloved by Twins fans. If only there was a way to keep him around Target Field without letting him get to the plate . . .   Guess what? There is.   Drew Butera should be the Twins mascot.   There are lots of reason why Butera could step into TC Bear's shoes without much difficulty.   -- He's kind of a wee little guy, and it seems like that helps with fitting into mascot suits.   -- Whenever I'm at a game, i

Random Tuesday Twins Thoughts and Tidbits

This is a regular weekly feature at The Tenth Inning Stetch and is partially reposted here. You can find the original here   Here is this week's installment (heavily influenced by Spring Training) : Wishing my best to Joel Zumaya, who's career with the Twins for all practical purposes ended last Sunday. Several media outlets have mentioned that he is considering retiring from baseball and becoming a professional fisherman. Terry Ryan indicated that the Twins most likely will replace Zumaya

The Braun Legacy (in theatres soon)

The following was originally posted at http://www.knuckleballsblog.com   I realize I’m several days late to the party in terms of discussing the arbitrator’s ruling in favor of Brewers’ star Ryan Braun, but it took me a while to come to grips with exactly how I feel about it. I’ve now done that and I’ve concluded one thing for certain… I want the movie rights. Before you scoff, remember that Hollywood made a successful movie last year about Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane. Sure, it helpe

One week to go: Minor league thoughts - Tony Davis

Well, I have exactly a week left before spring training and, I’m sure just like many of my teammates, there are plenty of things on my mind. The Emotions At one end of the spectrum, spring training brings about feelings of excitement and readiness that I cant really put into words. We’ve all quietly prepared ourselves. We know what we need to do. We can’t get moved up levels while were at home in the off-season. This is what its all about. It’s go time. At the other end of the spectrum, however

How long will Dozier stay in the minors?

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-q9yTJA0HubY/T0u2kqT2SdI/AAAAAAAABGo/0my5j4SyCow/s320/Dozier+Twins.jpg One of the Twins biggest offseason investments was in the form of 38-year old middle infielder Jamey Carroll. The versatile free agent was brought to the organization to help solidify a middle infield that waffled through a gargantuan amount of issues in 2011. He seems to get better with age and the Twins are hoping their two-year investment in the elder statesman can continue to lead to success from
