Twins Minor League Report (8/14): Plenty of Hits in AA and A+

In the minors on Sunday, the offenses of the Chattanooga Lookouts and Fort Myers Miracle combined for nineteen runs and twenty six hits on the day. One team pulled away late, and the other was forced to make a comeback. Would they be able to complete it?   There was also some roster shuffling in AAA and AA due to Rochester’s postponement from Saturday. Andrew Albers was optioned back to AAA in addition to David Hurlbut’s promotion yesterday, and Luke Bard was promoted to Chattanooga so they’d ea

Twins Could Have New GM By Mid-Sept., Tampa's Chaim Bloom A Candidate?

The Twins have been very under the radar in their search for a new general manager, but could the team be in a position to announce a new hire before the end of the 2016 season? Recent remarks from Star Tribune reporter Phil Miller certainly make that sound like a real possibility.   Miller joined host Michael Rand on the most recent episode of the Star Tribune's Twins Insider podcast, and had a couple of very interesting tidbits to share in regard to the team's search for a new gm. The topic co

What If Twins Never Signed Joe Mauer?

If you've paid any attention to one of the most criticized parts of the Minnesota Twins over the past handful of years, you've been made aware of the large contingent of fans upset over Joe Mauer's $184 million contract. Despite being the fourth-largest deal in MLB history at the time, and the largest ever for a catcher, it seemed to make perfect sense from the get go. Now more than six years later however, there's still plenty wondering (and even wishing), what if it never happened?   Let's set

Twins Minor League Report (8/11): Gonsalves Aces Barons

As you will find out reading the rest of this report, I don’t have to say much more in this opening other than pitching was fantastic on this night throughout the Twins’ affiliates after the clunkers the MLB team put on display in their double-header.   They were 6-0 on the day (7-0 if I include the DSL), and you can check out all the standout pitching performances, including Stephen Gonsalves achieving “Ace” status by taking down his fifth Southern League opponent in the Birmingham (Red) Barons

Now is the time to trade Dozier

Dozier is phenomenal, I would hate to see him go, that said, now is the time to trade him. Here is what I think we could get for him, a potential starting catcher, a close to ready starting pitcher and an A ball throw in, I hate to do it, but Polanco is clearly ready to take over and we can recharge the team with the return.

The Twins Almanac for August 13-19   http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/mjohnso9/20160810_105206_zpsixc8dcyp.jpg   And here is the first full-fledged Twins Almanac in awhile. In my absence from Twins Daily, many of you have been keeping in touch on Twitter, with over 1,000 new people following @TwinsAlmanac over the past month. It's good to be back writing posts of greater than 140 characters, though. This was a fun week in Twins history to write about. My childhood hero Kent Hrbek's n

Do Twins Create A Utility Duo?

At different points during the 2016 Major League Baseball season, the talking point regarding Danny Santana and Eduardo Escobar has came up. Both players present similar skillsets, and the likeliest scenario is a utility type position going forward. The question is though, do the Twins choose to roster both players a year from now, or is their only room for one Swiss Army Knife.   First, the less flexible of the two, Eduardo Escobar. While Escobar has made a home at shortstop, he's been passed u

Kernels on the Links

Every year, a number of Cedar Rapids Kernels players and coaches spend one of their off-days sweating on a golf course with a bunch of people willing to shell out a couple dollars (actually a bit more) for the pleasure of sharing their company as they knock a little white ball about 6,000 yards around a local golf course to benefit the organization’s childrens’ reading program.http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/CordyMiller-600x400.jpg - Max Cordy is slightly taller than

Is Grossman A Twin For The Future?

On May 20th, Robbie Grossman made his debut with the Minnesota Twins. After starting the year in the Cleveland Indians organization, Grossman saw opportunity through the Twins farm system and jumped ship. Playing just one game with the Rochester Red Wings, Grossman was headed to the big leagues. The question now is should he stay there, at least for the Twins.   In the 2008 Major League Baseball draft, Robbie Grossman was a 6th round pick out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Someone Else Give A-Rod A Chance

Alex Rodriguez will play his final game for the New York Yankees on Friday. It's the end to a saga that seemingly has such a sad trombone effect to it. No matter what you feel about Alex Rodriguez the human, or even the ballplayer, this doesn't feel like how the script was supposed to end. Then again, I'm not really of the belief that this is it either.   I have no idea what the contractual obligations boil down to. Rodriguez isn't a free agent until the 2018 season, at which point he'd turn 43

Twins Killers: Nolan Ryan No-Hits The Twins, Sept. 28, 1974

1974 was weird. There was Nixon resigning. The Vietnam War raged on. The heiress Patty Hearst was kidnapped. Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's all-time homerun record. And Nolan Ryan kept on throwing harder than hell, almost scoring a second consecutive season with two no-hitters.   Join old curmudgeonly Grandpa Twins on the back porch, and read Twins Killers! Nolan Ryan No-Hits The Twins, Sept. 28, 1974. Maybe he'll give you a quarter for your trouble...or some old candy from the drawer.

Buxton Remains Twins Biggest Hurdle For New GM

Over the weekend, Byron Buxton was demoted back to Triple-A. With Trevor Plouffe returning from the disabled list, Paul Molitor needed a roster spot for the veteran. Miguel Sano wasn't going to go back to the farm without a fight, and Kennys Vargas has put up decent numbers in his latest stint with Minnesota. That left the top prospect the odd man out, and now things are starting to get real for Buxton and the Twins.   It's been just over a year since Byron Buxton made his major league debut. In

TwinsDaiy Minor League Report (8/7): Omar Bencomo is Awesome!

If the season started 10 games ago, the Twins would have the second best record in the American League. Too bad the twins have been terrible for the better part of four months. To make things worse, the Twins sent struggling Byron Buxton to Rochester to make room for Trevor Plouffe who is activated from the Disabled List.   Continue reading to find out more detail about Saturday in the Twins farm system:   RED WINGS REPORT Rochester @ Lehigh Valley IronPigs Box Score   Byung Ho Park had anot

A Look at Minor League Promotions of College Relief Pitchers

Back on June 11, the Minnesota Twins were defeated by the Boston Red Sox 15-4, giving up 10 runs over the final two innings to let an otherwise close game get out of reach.   It wasn’t just another loss in another losing season. It was noteworthy because it gave fans their first look at J. T. Chargois, a highly-touted, hard-throwing pitching prospect from the 2012 draft. Chargois is one of many collegiate relief pitchers the Twins have been stockpiling with high picks in the amateur draft over t

Which is the real Twins team

On May 24th the Twins dropped to 11-34 after a 7-4 loss to the Royals. At that point they were the worst team in baseball by a wide margin. These 62 Twins Seem More Realistic

Through the beginning of the 2016 Major League Baseball season, the Minnesota Twins were the worst team in baseball. Paul Molitor's club lost their first nine games, and they were competing on a nightly basis with the Atlanta Braves to see who could pile up losses at a faster pace. Over the past 62 games though, the Twins have looked like a much better representation of what should have happened this season.   Out of the gates, things were bad for the Twins. Through the end of June, Minnesota ow

Kepler's Power Is A Product Of Process

When looking at the 2016 Minnesota Twins, there's been plenty to be down about. The majority of the season has been spent in the cellar, and the club has failed to live up to its lofty expectations. Now in August though, the biggest storyline of late for this group is the emergence of Max Kepler. The German born prospect has burst onto the scene, and his power has been on full display. The question though is whether or not it should have been expected.   Kepler was signed by the Twins as an amat

Hector "Houdini" Santiago: New Pitcher Excels With Runners On

In the wake of the Twins acquiring Hector Santiago from the Angels, some have questioned how big of an upgrade he'll be over Ricky Nolasco, mainly pointing to Nolasco's vastly superior numbers in terms of FIP (fielding independent pitching). While the peripheral stats may be in Nolasco's favor, they don't tell the whole story.   The biggest divide between these two players is how they bear down when things start to not go in their favor. If you take a look into how each pitcher performs with run

Brian Dozier's Silent Asset

It's been a unconventional season for the Minnesota Twins second basemen. While the club raced out to the worst record in the major leagues, it was Brian Dozier that was struggling right along with the majority of the group. Typically know to fade down the stretch, Dozier's bat didn't seem to ever make the transition to games that counted. Now he's turned a massive corner, but there's more to the narrative than the offensive production.   Trying to overstate just how bad Dozier was for the Twins
