Who are these better pitchers that you apparently believe were just sitting around waiting for the Twins to call? Just to reiterate, the top free agent starting pitcher this past offseason was Bartolo Colon. It's not like releasing Hughes was a realistic option. With him ending last season on the DL, I'm not even sure it was a "legal" option. It's really somewhat irrelevant how effective Hughes was or how lucky. Given his contract status, he was going and IS going to be in the rotation as long as he is physically able to pitch at all.
