Article: A Refreshing Shift in Twins Territory
yarnivek1972 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins received a guy who likely will be their primary first baseman in 2019 for 2 months of Lance Lynn. I’d think a full season of Gibson and Odorizzi would net them quite a bit more. If next year is another lost season, which was the assumption used to justify the moves, that would leave Rosario with two remaining years of control and the Twins still without an ace. -
Only the Twins could find themselves short staffed in terms of position players in September. By my count, they have 11 healthy position players on active roster. That’s what happens when you only have 17 position players on your 40 man roster. Fantastic roster management continues from the boys upstairs.

Because this should be the team’s goal? In 2019 or ever? IMO, if the best they can do is “probably” be above .500 and have a shot, I’d rather sell Rosario, Gibson and Odorizzi and go full rebuild. I’ve said this before, but IMO the only way this core of players contends for a title is if Sano and Buxton are 5-6 bWAR players and they either acquire or develop a legitimate ace starting pitcher. -

Of course, not all of those are inherited from starters. Many no doubt carry from one reliever to another. -
Article: MIN 8, DET 2: Gonsalves Stymies Tigers
yarnivek1972 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gonsalves and Busenitz dominated AAA. The results at the MLB level are mediocre to poor. What does that say about the chance for success for a guy that did poorly at AAA (Wade and Gordon)? What is the point of giving someone at bats who will clearly be overmatched? Not to mention starting their service time clocks.- 31 replies

That becomes impractical in an era of 3 man benches. Benches are no longer a strategic tool. They are backups. They play when guys are hurt or need a day off, period. Randy Bush ain’t on anyone’s bench.

His offensive numbers are better, granted with considerably fewer at bats. Defensively, where is the change? He was one of the worst shortstops in the league last year and is again this year.

Not really seeing guys that are stepping up and saying “play me”. Other than Cave and Astudillo. Which really doesn’t help at 1b, 3b or 2b. Vargas was terrible in AAA. Gordon was overmatched. Most of the AAA roster was just plain bad. Quality players are out there. But they are not in the upper levels of this organization. If this team wants to contend, that has to change. Think about 1991. Granted, there weren’t a lot of major injuries. But there were some DL stints here and there. Dan Gladden gets hurt. Shane Mack struggles. Enter Pedro Munoz. Junior Ortiz gets hurt. Lenny Webster produces. As I recall, the Twins sort of piecemealed the 4 and 5 spots in September, going with guys like Willie Banks, Tom Edens, Denny Neagle, Paul Abbott and Allan Anderson. The Twins got some production from all those guys. It helped that Tom Kelly was a master at putting players in position to succeed. But the FO recognized the importance of having quality players that can help at the MLB level in AAA. That is what this FO needs to do. Plus get some talent at the MLB level.

yarnivek1972 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gonsalves had a 4-0 lead before he threw a pitch. Odorizzi pitched 5 innings in a 0-0 tie. Higher leverage = higher WPA. That’s simply how that stat works.- 31 replies

Sanchez missed half of April and basically all of May. Who makes those starts if not Lynn? By the start of June, when Sanchez started being good, it would probably have been too late.

Given that the back up plans this year were Taylor Motter, Ryan LaMarre, et al, the decision becomes quite difficult. But therein lies the bigger issue - lack of depth.

IMO, Dozier and Morrison saying they were playing “hurt” is them trying to put a spin on poor performance to attempt to pull the wool over someone’s eyes when it comes time to sign their next contract. I suspect it won’t work. Morrison will likely have to settle for a minor league deal and Dozier will be lucky to get one plus an option year. Both are one position players, and one dimensional. They hit home homeruns. Neither is particularly good at the one position they do play. Dozier’s days as a base stealer are pretty much over. One dimensional and they didn’t do that one dimension particularly well this year. If the Dodgers QO him, he would be wise to take it IMO.

Article: Week in Review: A Grand Finale?
yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So, might be interesting to see what, if anything, Gardy and the Tigers do Wednesday. I wouldn’t expect a big to do since he hasn’t officially made a decision. But I would expect to see Gardy and Mauer do a lineup exchange and handshake. -

The same storm that is going to cool off Minnesota tonight figures to be in the Detroit area sometime tomorrow afternoon. If the remnants of Florence slows it down, there could be a delay tomorrow. And that’s a look at the weather, next up: sports. -
Article: KC 8, MIN 4: OH THE HUMANITY!
yarnivek1972 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Repeating, Who? Maybe Hildenberger was having a bad night. But the only reasonable choices were Reed and Belisle, who have been terrible most of the year. Oliver Drake? It’s easy to criticize, but if you don’t supply an alternative action, your criticism is empty.- 25 replies

Hildenberger has gotten the majority of 9th inning save chances since Rodney was traded. In this particular game, what is your better alternative? Rogers and May had already been used. Most of the rest down there aren’t better.- 25 replies

As long as he continues to post a 2.7 bWAR. Kepler is not one of the problems with this team. People need to stop thinking he is.

Article: Where Are The Twins Getting It Wrong?

There are exactly six (6) relievers making more than $12 mil per year. Three of them are with the Yankees, who always overpay. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/rankings/relief-pitcher/ What relievers out there do you think will command $12 to $18 mil per year? -
3rd time through the order, Yankees were 1 for 7, with a double and a walk. That’s 2 good third trips in his last 4 starts. Baby steps.

Article: Where Are The Twins Getting It Wrong?
yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The drop off on the offensive side is more concerning than pitching. Starting pitching anyway. In terms of ERA, Twins starters went from 19th to 23rd. A lot of that drop is Phil Hughes, early Lance Lynn and the struggles of call ups like Gonsalves, Littel, etc. Berrios, Gibson, Odorizzi and Lynn (since the start of May) have been pretty good. No one will confuse them with Houston or Cleveland’s rotation, but they have been good enough to win games if they had gotten the run support this same team supplied last year. -
Yes, I would agree that Astudillo has likely consumed more cake than well, probably only Buxton by now. The rest of those guys are much older.
