  1. I suspect the umpire was squeezing the zone. I looked up some data that I put in the game thread. Of the 15 home plate umpires working today, he has the highest average walks per game.
  2. He had a brief period of great play, but in the last 6 games he is 4 for 17, 1 2b, 3 BB, 8 K. Oh, and 3 errors.
  3. Looks like the weather is going to play a part in the next couple games. Unless the game moves quick, it might be tough to get before the rain comes at about 9ish or soon after. Saturday could be a complete washout until 7 or 8.
  4. What kind of a contract are you willing to give a guy that could be a couple more wall collisions from his career being over?
  5. Not so much today. But back when there was a knuckleballer or two in the league, catchers would be charged with passed balls that were simply the result of the ball knuckling away from the catcher. It wasn’t really fair to the catcher, but everyone understood what was going on.
  6. I could care less if he uses one hand, two hands or his feet. As long as he catches the ball.
  7. The guy I wanted to see earlier this year (Jake Reed) has kind of fallen off. He’s had three outings in the past 2 1/2 weeks where he’s given up 3 or more runs. FWIW, his numbers against RHB are still pretty good but LHB are killing him at a .926 OPS. I don’t know what his arsenal is, but usually a good cutter can be effective from RHP to LHB.
  8. The scorer gave him an error. In this day that doesn’t happen unless someone botches a very routine play. I’m pretty sure if asked Rosario would say he needs to make that catch.
  9. It’s worth remembering that the Twins are on Greinke’s no trade list. That’s not necesarily insurmountable, but it certainly complicates matters.
  10. Then apparently I’m misreading your post. In the segment I highlighted it says in different spots that the Twins have 99 and 22 more HRs than the A’s.
  11. Unless I am misreading stats, the Twins have 16 more HR than the Athletics.
  12. In 2019, yes. In 2020, only if he gets sent down before tomorrow. If my math is right, he will hit 45 days on the roster Saturday. Also, he would need to get fewer than 30 more at bats. I don’t see either happening. As for his chances in 2019, slim. Michael Chavis, John Means and Brandon Lowe are probably frontrunners.
  13. If I were a fan of the Reds I would be pretty upset that my team traded a guy that was under control for four more years at a pretty reasonable price. That would be tantamount to saying they don’t expect to compete during that span. How would you feel if the Twins traded Jose Berrios?
  14. Before considering Stashak I would want to know what he is doing in AAA (ERA under 3) that he wasn’t in AA (ERA of 8).
  15. That would have been a good question for a good reporter to ask in the postgame interview.
  16. And how are the Twins going to find out if it works? He’s out of options. How long of a leash do you give him as a starter? What do you do if he fails? Romero has been handled poorly by THIS FO. IMO, they would be better off trading him for whatever they can get to a non-contender and let that team work out his future. I think he has a future at the MLB level. In what role I can’t say. But I don’t think he fits on a team that is trying to contend.
  17. There’s less than 6 weeks left in the AAA season. By the time he’s stretched out, the season will be over.
  18. That’s fine as plan B in case of injury down the stretch or to shuttle replace the back end of the pen. But there are at least two relievers who should be removed from the roster right now: Duffey and Magill. Amazingly, just a few days ago that number was FOUR. Rogers and May are a pretty solid duo at the top. What is needed are two more at or close to the level of May, maybe even above for one. Basically, making the “pecking” order: Rogers ???? May ???? Harper Parker Littell If the Twins want to occasionally shuttle up an 8th reliever, fine. That’s the role for Thorpe, Smeltzer, etc. Attempting to improve the bullpen only using internal options isn’t going to work. It will just add question marks. The Twins don’t need more question marks. They need more “sure things” - whatever those are with regards to relievers.
  19. I don’t think Magill survives the next two weeks let alone the offseason.
  20. I seriously think I would rather have Ryan O’Rourke back than any of the lefties mentioned.
  21. Soria’s career K per 9 “only” being 9.8 is likely reflective of pitching a good chunk of his career before league K rates skyrocketed. In 2007 (Soria’s first year at MLB) the league K rate was 17.1.%. In 2019, it is 22.8%. That’s about a 30% increase in strikeouts.
  22. I said a couple days ago that Morin and Magill can both be dismissed in favor of a revolving long man with Smeltzer, Lewis, and maybe even Stewart or Poppen taking turns. The Twins don’t need two mop up guys if they have one that can give them 3 innings plus if needed. And then if some outside additions are made to the pen, Duffey and Littell can join the shuttle.
