  1. Who is saying free speech should be suppressed? Bigots can say what they want, but the rest of society in turn then has the obligation to shame that person to demonstrate to other bigots that those views will no longer serve to dictate the direction our society will head thus forth. Unless you are of mind that those biggoted views serve a positive purpose?
  2. If people had continued to say "everyone has the right to their opinion" instead of voicing their outrage, the South would still be segregated.
  3. Intolerance of intolerance is the only way to facilitate social change.
  4. While Hunter's fear of homosexuals is wrong, after reading the article the comments weren't nearly as inflamatory as I was expecting. He said he'd be uncomfortable with openly gay teamates, the comment sounded less hate-filled than the statements that about half of our elected officials make when they are asked to opine on the subject. I'll offer my own small-minded thought: What do you expect from a guy from Arkansas?
  5. He had already lost me after that highlighted statement.
  6. If Morneau somehow gets back to his pre-injury form, just think of all the fun screaming matches that will take place here come July about whether to trade him or extend him. Should be fun.
  7. It's a fun idea, but Lohse has been far from the model of consistancy through his career. If he pitched like he did in 2011 and 2012 the Twins could move him, if he pitched like he did in 2009 and 2010 they're left holding the bag. In Bourn, that would mean you're risking paying a guy $15 million + with a career .704 OPS and who's never topped .740 in a single season. He looks a lot like Ben Revere but takes a few more walks, strikes out a ton more and has a much better PR team. There's a good chance the draft pick isn't the biggest issue, perhaps Bourn isn't signing because no one sees him as a $10 million player yet Boras is trying to get him $20 million. Also, I believe you can trade players before June 15 as long as the player agrees to the deal. Surely they would if that was the plan all along. At some point MLB probably would need to consider interceding though if teams used this technique often and blatently skirted the CBA.
  8. I'd like to hear from Chris Colabello. He's been around awhile but is starting to make a case for himself to get a crack at the MLB level. I've heard the highest level of independant baseball leagues compared talentwise to AA, I'd like to know how he rates the difficulty levels. I'd also like to know how long a guy like him would continue to chase the presumed dream of making it to the big leagues.
  9. I wasn't complaining. I was just pointing out that the Twins were trying to sell to the public that they also couldn't "give their money away" to Hunter and Santana even though the money (and mostly the years) they were offering were not as much as the other teams were willing to give. I was simply providing past experience to support Brock's Ferrari analogy which, like it or not, is a very likely theory.
  10. Right, but they are doing their damnedest to make sure having a top ten payroll is NOT warrented now or in the near future. It's unneccisarily affecting the 2013 team, so again, do you care more about having a competitive team, or do you care more about justifying the Pohlad's lawful right to not field one? You seem to be ignoring the opposite side of the coin. If the Pohlad's have every right to lower payroll as they deem fit, why do the fans and tax payers who funded their cash cow not have the right to call into question their motives?
  11. Well which is it, do you care about the team, or do you not feel the Pohlad's are obligated to assemble a proper one?
  12. And since they pulled this same stunt when "attempting" to negotiate with Santana and Hunter, it's logical to believe this is actually what is happening with this years free agents to whom they "can't give away their money."
  13. While that has some merit, I don't buy it in this case. If they wanted a veteran who they could let get abused every fifth day regardless of performance, they might as well just let Blackburn go out there and get destroyed for 100 pitches. Even if Ryan thinks this will happen, it won't. Gardenhire is fighting for his job (ha good luck), he's not going to willingly let Correia to continue to eat innings if he's not effective. Ryan has no say over in game decisions, Gardy will surely pull him after three innings and kill the bullpen in the process if he thinks it's the only way to salvage a game.
  14. The Swisher signing didn't make a lot of sense to me. He seems due for a decline, it's just his agent was angling for a big deal long before he hit the market. He was basically playing in his prime years in NY surrounded by all kinds of bats able to protect him and hitting in a very offensively friendly park, yet his numbers were about the same as they were his last two years in Oakland. I would have thought his numbers would have improved during that time, just as they did for Granderson. Now he's heading into the declining stage of his carrer in a less offensively friendly park with less offensive help. If he falters, he likely falters big time. If that OBP starts dropping that's all she wrote, all of his offensive powers stem from being able to get on base. That being said, his contract shouldn't be an albatross for the Indians, anymore than Mauer's for the Twins. The Indians aren't going to be paying too many guys in the coming years, they'll be relying on the cheap talent at the farm so they can afford to take a high priced gamble more so now, than say in six years when those guys will hit arbitration/free agency.
  15. Good posting. I first read the headline and rolled my eyes thinking this would be a serious topic.
  16. Great article, it's cathartic to read eloquent articles that properly sum up our collective frustration. Mike Illitch and the Tigers spend money on the team and field a competitve product to prove their loyalty to the fans, and as expected, the fans buy tickets and spend money at the stadium. Contrarily, the Pohlads and the Twins ask the fans to prove their loyalty to the team in the form of buying tickets and spending money at the stadium before they'll spend enough money to put a competitve product on the field.
  17. So what that quote means is someone offered a one year six million dollar deal and Correia told the Twins I want two years and I'll take five per. Ryan should have told him to get lost.
  18. Just by going off last years numbers on fangraphs, I found only one team in the top ten in team K/9 had a losing record and only three in the bottom ten had winning records. Meanwhile five of the top ten teams in groundball percentage had losing records and five of the bottom ten had winning percentages. At the very least, lasts years numbers indicate the Twins approach of seeking groundball pitchers is pointless.
  19. Of course from that quote, it sounds like he measures the quality of a pitcher solely on ERA. I'd be more interested in the correlation between K/9 and a teams winning percentage.
  20. I'm still blaming the Cubs for kicking over the first two dominos in the fifth-starter over-spending spree.
  21. The ERA is often lower for strikeout pitchers, but that's just the bonus. The true benefit is the fewer UNEARNED runs they give up due to the fewer chances they give the defense to screw up. If anything we should find a higher ERA for a strikeout pitcher acceptable seeing as they are preventing unearned runs. Giving up runs loses games earned or not.
  22. I think you need to hire a better odds maker. His 82 inning 2011 still produced a better WAR than all but two Twins starters last year. It's still better odds than trying to come out ahead playing the ATM machine which is what the Correia signing was. Besides, why is anyone giving this deal any more pessimism than the minor league deals given to Vasquez, Walters and Deduno?
  23. While I normally agree, this only registers because he was once a big name. It's a minor league signing, no different than the signing and invitations made to Deduno, Walters and Vasquez. He's not even taking a 40-man roster spot, which means this should probably register lower on the off season radar than the Josh Roenicke and Tim Wood signings.
  24. I wouldn't worry about it, there are plenty of innings to go around this spring. There's no such thing as a bad minor league signing. Except maybe when the Padres signed Garth Brooks.
  25. Sadly, the Pirates also have more pitching depth than the Twins, so if he fails as a starter, the Pirates would be just fine commiting to putting him in the bullpen full time if needed.
