  1. This is the crux of your problem. Your view of overpaying is being top dollar. And yes, in most instances, you have to be top dollar to get the free agent no matter which team is offering the contract. The agent's job is letting each team know (or conning them into believing) what is being offerd by the other clubs so that one of them will go just a little bit higher. Terry Ryan's view of overpaying is when the pitcher signs a contract for anything more than what Ryan thinks he's worth. Which happens to be nearly every single pitcher who has ever worn a MLB uniform.
  2. Couldn't you say the same about the Mets and Pelfrey? Why did Ryan sign him then?
  3. Matt Holliday, Carlos Beltran and Lance Berkman might disagree. The Vikings have been great about bringing in free agents when needed. Lumping the Wild into the statement probably discredits anything else in your post.
  4. Here's a conundrum for the Ryan appologists: The Twins gave Mike Pelfrey $4 million. The Mets gave Shawn Marcum $4 million. If your logic says that Pelfrey wouldn't spurn the Mets for the small-market (BS), non-contending Twins, then that means the Mets didn't want the guy at $4 million or he would still be in NY. However the Mets did want Marcum at $4 million. So either players DON'T spurn the Twins for big markets, OR the Mets have fewer worries about the risk/reward of Marcum than they do the risk/reward of Pelfrey and the Mets are much more intimately familiar with Pelfrey. Obviously option #2 is the reasoning behind this situation, but the fact that the Mets like Marcum over Pelfrey should have told the Twins that they too should have liked Marcum over Pelfrey.
  5. So many contradictions. Can our universe survive all these paradoxes? Ryan better stop screwing with the space-time continuim.
  6. So MLB is just going to tell KC to suck it and close up shop? Dispite being terrible for basically two decades, they aren't in the bottom 5 in attendance under any metric. Contraction isn't an option, unlike 2000, when baseball was still struggling to recover from the strike. Baseball once again is very popular, there will be plenty of places clamoring for the Rays if they officially let it be known they are free agents.
  7. Jack Morris, and he was paid as one of the top pitchers too. Without knowing the bonus money, if the Mets gave Marcum $4 million, are you actually trying to say he wouldn't have come to the Twins for $6 million? That's ludicris and the players union would put up a stink if he did that, just as they would if David Price took a 33% discouont to stay with Tampa Bay. P.S. Just read your last two lines. What did money have to do with Justin Upton? He is already under contract, if anything, that proves that he had the luxery to be picky about his destination because he had ALREADY been paid.
  8. Obviously injury concerns are the major factor, yet if the Twins couldn't stomach the risk why did they give a guy who surely won't be ready opening day due to TJ surgery the same contract?
  9. Wow, 1 year $4 million plus incentives. Base salary is 40% of what the Twins paid Corriea.
  10. Besides the fact that his base contract is 15% of Correia's, I could care less. All these soft tossers are starting to look the same to me. Mark me down for a Meh vote too.
  11. Too bad for the few fans in the Tampa area. It certainly does seem like the St. Pete Mayor/City councel would rather they leave then let them move to the more profitable city of Tampa. Those cities must have some sort of animosity, I'd like to think if the Twins gave Minneapolis two options, we leave the state or move to St. Paul, Minneapolis would concede and allow the move across the river. Portland OR has always been discussed as a relocation target in the past but I'm sure the Mariners would put up a fight. Tennessee seems like the logical fit, they'd be taking territory away from St. Louis, Atlanta and Cincinatti so it's not as though any one team has a strangle hold on the region. Easy compromise.
  12. Another good article Parker. That's the first one that made me want to cry though. What could have been.
  13. At this point he'd probably be a bargain, but the Twins have so many young options for the bullpen I'd be reluctant. The Twins are already giving spots to Perkins, Burton, Duensing, Swarzak and Burnett. Though in my book Burnett and Swarzak are expendable, the Twins surely will be giving them a spot if healthy. If Capps was in the mix, that would leave one spot for Fein, Pressly, Wood, Robertson, Harden and Roenicke taking dark horses completely out of the equation, guys like Theilbar, Guerra and Slama. This also greatly hinders the option of putting the sixth or seventh starter in the bullpen to start the season. This team is rebuilding, they need to see what they have in some of these younger options. Last year the Twins had three open spots, they gave them to Gray, Maloney and Burton. Had they only had one open spot, would they still have found gold in Burton?
  14. Compared to the reported return from the Mariners, AZ seemed to take a bit of a discount this time around. When you consider that Prado is a rental player the deal looks poor, it looks quite a bit better after we hear that they are already working on an extension. Since when was Deldado viewed as a back of the rotaion arm? When we were all discussing Span going to Atlanta, he was one of the top names mentioned and most people here would have been happy to have him all while we were clamoring for high ceiling arms.
  15. Yup, Ryan got worked over by Jed Hoyer, Theo Epstein and the Cubs right away in free agency and never managed to recover. Indefensible; as one of only 30 GM's you have to be able to adjust the off season game plan when things don't go as you expect. Even Saundes wouldn't rectify the situation in my opinion. Signing a #4 starter only looks good because most of the other arms are swingmen. This club needed better than that.
  16. This face? http://i.usatoday.net/sports/_photos/2012/06/04/Shoulder-strain-sidelines-Twins-Carl-Pavano-FD1JVLHA-x-large.jpg Or this one? http://mit.zenfs.com/121/2011/05/PavanoBat.jpg
  17. And Matt Capps throws 95. You can parse the words all you want but you are fully aware that when he is requesting hard throwers he is actaully asking for guys with strikeout ability.
  18. Did you not read the article? Correia's inability to get past the 6th inning was one of Mackey's points of contention.
  19. Ha, duck and cover, it's going to get ugly pretty quick!
  20. I can't believe that. Ryan granted an interview to Mackey, and judging by the tone of the article the questions were not particularly pleasent. Ryan specifically said "I don't think we overpaid" which means that Mackey actually asked Ryan something along the lines of "Do you think you overpaid for Correia?" Ryan was very defensive and went on to say things like "We weren't the only team chasing him," and "He's a little better than a fifth starter." He also took several opportunities to lay the situation at the scouts/evaluators feet by implying that he got the information from those people as opposed to making the decision based on his personal assesment. With Ryan being defensive with many of his answers and perhaps subconciously trying to put this signing on the evaluators below him, it would tell me that Ryan certainly would have disclosed any "secret" information the Twins knew about Correia that would swing popular opinion in his favor. There would be no harm in proclaiming Correia's hidden attributes at this point, they already signed him.
  21. WTF, did Ryan really try to imply Correia's poor 2012 production was due to being moved to the bullpen? Where he pitched all of 10 innings? Nothing more to say about this situation that hasn't already been said but this boils my blood. This is the closest a member of the media has come to pointing out that Ryan is making poor decisions. Hopefully more members of the media now see they can constructively criticize the Twins and start the process of holding Ryan accountable for this BS.
  22. I liked the Freddy Garcia angle. Helps perpetuate the belief that the Yankees get all the calls.
  23. I'd take him over just about all the AAAA arms the Twins have hanging around the 40-man including Roenicke, Theilbar, Swarzak, Robertson, Wood and even the smoke and mirrors Alex Burnett. Still, the Twins have had a shot at about a half dozen of these potential strikeout heavy arms and have so far passed on all of them.
  24. Knock on wood, but Beane has a solid track record of identifying top end young pitching regardless of circumstance, Ryan does not. If we are going to judge the guys in the Twins system based on how they are ranked as opposed to waiting to see how they will perform at the MLB level (like we can with most of the A's young arms) we need to ready ourselves for the possiblity they will not be what we have hoped for. Let us not forget that while BA's top ranking for Gibson was (34) and May was (69), Meyer has not been ranked and our last batch of starters were ranked: Liriano (6), Slowey (71) and gulp, Blackburn (56). I think we've forgotten that Nick Blackburn was once a hotter prospect than May or Meyer currently are.
  25. Weeks was so awful he got demoted to AAA for the stretch run. What do the A's have that the Twins don't? They have a grotesquely overcompensating pitchers park and this whole century they've had a steady stream of top end pitching talent and a GM who knows how to deal them at their peak value to ensure that he can obtain the maximum return, which usaully means getting no less than two more stud young arms to replace the one he just gave up. He nearly never wiffs when he gets pitching talent back in return.
