  1. Judging by what's on the field at the MLB level, the Twins would be hypocritical to stiffle promotions based on defense.
  2. Cabrera is a pretty poor defender. I'd still take the trade off if he puts up Cabrera numbers. If you want to use a large third baseman as an example, use Scott Rolen, he is Sano's size and an all time elite defender. You can be large and play 3B.
  3. I'm quick to criticize the often pokey development, but there really are only a few examples of guys currently in the system that really should have been promoted sooner. Look for that to change though if the Twins end up drafting Stanek or Appel in the draft. Their college season has yet to begin but both have a decent shot of being drafted in 2013 and arriving at the MLB level 2014. I don't think the Twins would be able to stymie the advancement of high profile and high polish college arms such as them.
  4. MLB Trade Rumors, re-ran Doogie's blurb about the Twins being interested in Saunders for one year. I didn't see any new information on the MTR sight so my only conclusion is they must be openly campaigning for the Twins to get him.
  5. Wouldn't happen. Ryan is way to indecisive. If the Twins somehow have a record like that, Ryan will imply that the Twins will be buyers at the deadline but in fact will do nothing because asking prices will be too high. By the time the trade deadline passes and it is clear the team is out of it, he will have sat on his hands too long and will have moved no vets for prospects.
  6. Do they have to induct someone every year? Time to shelve the Twins HOF until the Hunter/Santana/Morneau/Mauer/Nathan class are available. However it could be worse, I think the Royals included everyone on thier 1985 World Championship team individually in their team HOF.
  7. I've never been much of a Gardenhire appologist, but I hope he and Ryan are not joined at the hip, simply because when this awful club blows up, Ryan needs to be the first to go.
  8. I thought it sounded like some kind of punk band. Too bad for Pavano, he didn't seem to have much momentum going for him this offseason. I hope he recovers and get's another chance, still, I'd have to think the Twins would need to be in contention if they were to add a veteran pitcher mid-season.
  9. Maybe I'm not as familiar with micro-fracture surgery, but hasn't that historically been a pretty hit-or-miss procedure? Seems unlikely that there would be no concern about it.
  10. Yeah, I know the guys around my office who don't pull their weight are really popular. Hope no one was hoping for Kelly Johnson to make the decision easier for the middle infield. He signed with those free spending Rays.
  11. The last line from Seth's sampled quote was the most telling: Do the Twins have any payroll restrictions this offseason compared to last year? "No," Pohlad said. "There are no payroll restrictions. I mean, within reason." Well isn't that arbitrary.
  12. These contradictory stances the front office keeps taking are starting to get predictable. It's becoming quite clear that despite this seeming like a key off season in terms of rebuilding stratagy, this organization did not exactly have a strong gameplan. I was fine with it being Plouffe's job to lose all along, 3B should never have been a top priority, but then why did Ryan talk about bringing in compition last November? Seems like he had big dreams for the top of the rotation, bullpen help and infield competition but accomplished none of it. Either the Pohlad's pulled his payroll sometime around the winter meetings, or Ryan thought he could fix these areas on the cheap. Either way, this club has egg on it's face.
  13. In the article, Ryan said "at some point in 2013 you're going to see him pitch for us." Not exactly a ringing endorsement about his chances of starting the season in the rotation. More damning is probably this line: "I want to see exactly how he competes in spring training, how he looks, how he responds, and of course there will be other people who somewhat dictate where that rotation is," Ryan said. "We'll see where he ends up before we start worrying about innings." If you're going to let the grab-bag of unimpressive vets dictate what you do with one of your top prospects, you obviously don't plan on letting him win his own spot. That makes it sound like Ryan thinks Gibson has an outside shot if someone else gets hurt.
  14. I don't like thinking that our frustration is making it to their ears, but Pelfrey is wrong, all outs are not created equal.
  15. You would think if they relocate, MLB would first look to keep them in the eastern part of the country unless they want to force some rather awkward division realignment. Can't imagine the highly influencial Yankees and Red Sox would be thrilled with having 17 additional West Coast games that only true night owls will view. I also doubt the Indians or Tigers would sit still while being forced to move to the wealthy and loaded AL West.
  16. Shame on you for admitting you were incorrect when faced with evidence contrary to your original premise. Do you not know that debate in this age is based entirely on stubbornly holding fast to every word you say regardless of any and all evidence showing you were wrong?
  17. I'm sure it's news to no one but Diaz is one of this seasons Cuban defectors. The Twins are said to have interest as they should, he's a young shortstop with offensive upside. The question now seems to be, how young? He has been claiming his age is 23. All too often Latin players have gotten busted claiming to be younger than the truely are. Reports are that Diaz is claiming to be OLDER than he truely is, this due to the fact that 23-year-old Cuban defectors are exempt from the international signing cap, meaning they have potential for a much bigger payday. I would hope the Twins are interested regardless of age, but this is a strange wrinkle. The Twins have been agressive in the international market of late but have been quite this year dispite numerous clubs already inking Latin players. I wonder if the Twins are anticipating that a ruling on Diaz will come back that his salary will count against the cap and are in a holding patern on the international front because they are planning on going all out for the young shortstop.
  18. Wow is this a crock. No one is bringing up the obvious. No way does Saunders take a one year deal from the Twins, because if it is only one year, the Orioles will likely match it and he will go back to Baltimore where he pitched and succeded last year. Ryan knows this, but he can once again play the no one wants to come here card. Has he stopped to think that if he keeps laying this line of BS, free agents might actually start believing something is wrong with Minnesota?
  19. Jeff Sullivan at Fangraphs had a fun Marcum article. Mets Grab Themselves a Cheap Shaun Marcum | FanGraphs Baseball Basically nothing different than what has been said in this thread, but he talks about how favorable this signing was compared to both Pelfrey and Correia. Aside from those two, Scott Baker was the only comp he gave, so in his opinion, the Twins had two of the three free agent signings that were bad enough to make this look like a steal.
  20. I'd prefer to wait, not only because of service time but because Hicks has been a slow starter in the past. I'm not convinced this team wouldn't panic if he started with a low BA even if he had a strong OBP. I have a feeling they don't put as much weight in the latter of the two stats.
  21. A week from now Ryan will have a totally contradictory quote. Something like: Twins GM looking for exprienced vet to man CF to start the season # foot in mouth
  22. Assuming all four of those guys stay healthy for a second consecutive season seems like a reach to me. An injury is usually what opens the door for a prospects playing time with this club. If not injury, poor production is usually the secondary factor. Likely Mauer or Morneau won't sit due to underachievment but surely Doumit or Parmelee would. No need to force anything, these things always work themselves out due to unfortunate happenstance at the MLB level.
  23. That just made Matt Fox cry.
  24. And after the Mets non-tendered Pelfrey he became a free agent that could have signed with anybody, including the Mets.
