  1. I'm sure Hicks will have a year (probably several) that he hits over his career minor league BA, but like most everyone else, his career MLB average likely will not be higher than his career MiLB average. However, seeing as his MiLB average is low likely due to his high strikeout totals, and if those totals are high because he is being too selective (unlike most MiLB'ers who have high K% because they chase evey breaking ball thrown), that may be something he can adjust if the team asks him to. In that situation I could see his average remain what it is at the MiLB level. Of course by asking him to be less selective, you also have to expect his BB% and by proxy his OBP to decrease, so is that really a trade off we should advocate the team to make?
  2. I particularly like that he is now playing in the notoriously tough FSL parks that he will be hitting in come opening day. If nothing else, hitting well in spring training should give him a ton of confidence heading into the games that count.
  3. I saw a piece on the MLB network last night about the rise of the three true outcome hitters. They too made the arguement that even the high contact hitters were whiffing more as the rising tide lifts all ships. Thiking about it, the rise of the three true outcome hitters does demonstrate why the Twins pitchers are decreasing in effectiveness also. The Twins pitchers don't have the ability to strike many guys out. Meanwhile they also are resistant to issuing walks, which in the three true outcome model is the lesser of the two evils. This leaves the HR as a higher probability for Twins pitchers than it likely would for other clubs.
  4. I guess I should have used a . I thought the bit about a third inning being used as a tie-breaker would give away satire.
  5. After this game, I think we should be able to definitively say if Correia or Lannan was a better offseason signing. Each pitcher will get two innings to prove their worth with a third inning used as a tie-breaker if needed.
  6. I didn't say anything about a trend, I simply wanted to know what changed last year.
  7. How about in a tie game with no outs, bases loaded and the double play still gets the go-ahead run across. An infield pop-up scores nothing and the inning-ending double play is still intact for the next hitter. I like reading about these unique stats, but I guess I'm more curious as to why Mauer struck out 88 times last year. It really never dawned on me that that number had increased so significantly until I read your passing comment. That's way out of his norm, and he's approaching the unflattering 100k level. I like Mauer, I'm not bashing him, but what happened last year to drive up his K% to 13.7%? His contact percentage was only down .8% from his career average. However his swing percentage was at 35.4%, down from his career average of 37.3% and his swing percentage of pitches in the zone was 52.5%, down from his career average of 55.5%. It would seem to me that his seeming desire to be the most selctive hitter is actually driving his K% up.
  8. Eddie's obviously not making the team anytime soon, but a September call-up is not out of the realm of possiblity if he keeps hitting and shows improved defense. Arcia started the year in Ft. Myers last year and likely would have been a September call up had the Twins a need for a corner outfielder. The middle infield is much less stable, desperation has influenced this team to dip down to New Britain several times over the last couple of years.
  9. Well stop officiating men's volleyball then. Women's volleyball is anything but terrible.
  10. I think it's great. The stadiums that Eddie is hitting in right now, will be the ones he will be hitting in come opening day. The Florida State League has been deemed tough on hitters and the ballparks are large due to their dual usage as MLB spring training fields. In the Twins system, once you get past the Midwest League (which usually is where this organization puts the breaks on prospects), promotions can happen quickly. If he can adjust to playing at the high A level quickly and his defense proves to be improved, the sky really is the ceiling from here on out. It should not be considered out of the question that Rosario may end up the front runner for the 2014 opening day 2B gig, his bat is proving to be legit.
  11. Can we quit spring training now please? Hicks, Rosario and Benson all having great games. Can we agree that the bit about stats not mattering in spring training only applies if your players stink?
  12. It's not the atbats as much as it is taking up one of only four likely bench spots. He can't play the field, the team would be pretty hampered when it comes to substitutions. And he's a lefty, the Twins need righties.
  13. 4 outs on 6 pitches for Pressly, you know that's going to cause Gardy all kinds of fantasies.
  14. Not to mention Parmelee's positional flexability is extremely helpful to keep Mauer in the lineup daily without having to DH him 2-3 times a week. How'd we get so off topic? I don't like this new direction, Morneau's a great Twin and everyone loves him. I don't like any of us being put into a position that logically requires us to denigrate him in any capacity. I hope he retires wearing only one uniform but it just isn't financially or strategically logical to do.
  15. I agree that he doesn't have much value as an expendable middle reliever, but even if he doesn't quite show what the front office is looking for this spring, but hints that there is still a possiblity of him being able to perform as a late game arm, I think you take that chance. After all, Swarzak, Roenicke, Burnett or whoever else that may take the spot clearly don't have 9th inning stuff, those kind of guys have already proven to be expendable.
  16. Seems like Josh Reddick would be the comp to shoot for. Great defense with power but lots of swing and miss.
  17. You must not have watched much Twins baseball last year. Either that or you've already purged it from your memory Men in Black style.
  18. I agree, but I suspect Butera may be the one pushed out the door if the team does chose to have a more powerful bench option. I don't see them sacraficing a bullpen spot with all the guys in the rotation being injury question marks. If the team is forced to pick between it's two loves, a 12 man pitching staff or a third catcher, I think they keep the bullpen fully stocked.
  19. If the Twins (Gardy) are adament about having some bench power, I have to think the team will give Colabello a very long look before turning to outside help. He's not young, but he's still on the good side of 30; much younger than the other options. Plus, it's probably not a bad thing to have another guy on the team pushing Parmelee to be the heir apparent to Morneau at 1B. Making it a foregone conclusion that Parmelee is the chosen one is dangerous and tempting fate.
  20. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but between 2006 and 2008, BA had Liriano ranked 6th, Garza 21st, Glen Perkins 66th, Slowey ranked 71st, and Blackburn ranked 56th. I think their rankings are better these days because they seem to value strikeout potential much more than in the past, and the young Twins arms have that ability, but it gets dangerous to pin all our hope on that much unproven talent.
  21. Ha, probably but I can't help but think that any clubhouse would benefit from having Jim Thome in it in some capacity.
  22. I agree, especially considering I'd prefer a righty.
  23. Colabello is a righty, he'd probably be a better fit than Thome if Gardenhire wants some pop off the bench if he's ready for the majors.
  24. Ha are you saying to cold, disappointing offseason brought out the worst in us? Perhaps a bit.
  25. La Velle says the Twins talked Thome about a month ago but have not spoken since. Something may still happen as Gardenhire has been requesting a stronger bat for the bench. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/193085161.html Sign him up and put him at short.
