  1. We must not have been watching the same games the Hughes started.
  2. I think it's most likely that the team considers Murphy the solution and the search is over. However, I have been wondering, did the Twins ever have the formal "announcement" of this trade? I ask because the Twins haven't usually been shy about press conferences and big announcements. I really have no reason to believe it, but it has crossed my mind more than once that perhaps the Twins are interested in a bigger name veteran catcher but the current owner of said catcher is requiring a younger replacement in return and Murphy is just that guy. Stupid thought, but keeps popping up.
  3. AL teams should have had priority over the NL teams when it came to claiming Pinto.
  4. I think I would have protected Michael, Jones and Pinto over O'Rourke, Dean and Landa, but if the Twins needed to rely on any of these guys in the next two years, something went wrong. I agree that Jorge likely doesn't get claimed as a low 90's starter in A ball isn't too attractive on paper, but I think some team could fix that if they're ambitious and have a roster spot to kill. This guy has the weakest delivery I've seen outside of a knuckleballer. The guy basically has a high leg kick and plants it right back where he picked it up from. He doesn't step to the plate at all, he throws with all shoulder and looks like he's trying to step on an egg without crushing it. I'd love to see what he does if he didn't throw like a dead-ball era pitcher playing catch with a toddler in the back yard.
  5. I'd be curious to know if the Mariners first tried to trade him, or if they are just trying to be sneaky and are trying to keep him. If they tried to trade him and couldn't, he'll likely go unclaimed.
  6. I agree. Even there's only a 10% chance that Hultzen makes it back, I'd roll the dice. There are multiple guys on the 40-man now, or might be added by the end of the day, that I'd be OK losing to take a 10% gamble with Hultzen. Heck, make that number 5%. You just don't see a ceiling like this present itself with so little risk.
  7. The numbers prior to his original injury were mouth watering. It's safe to say the Mariners know more than everyone else as to what's going on with him. On the other hand, the Mariners have made terrible decisions repeatedly lately.
  8. And I'd be more than thrilled if it was my favorite team. He was lights out in 2013 before he got hurt an missed a year. The M's don't give him a pass on his rebound 2015 season? That kind of impatience would not fly on this site. Chris Benson x10.
  9. I think unlikely, but to be fair, three years ago I was saying that Ryan has never signed a free agent starter to more than a two year deal and Ryan has never paid a free agent more than $8M a year and that Rayn has never fired a manager.
  10. Ok, I think this conversation has come full circle 10x over and nothing new is being brought to the table. It certainly has become more personal than productive. Additionally, this thread has generated a record number of complaints from both sides of the discussion, or probably more accurately, all sides of the discussion as I can't tell how many sides there are at this point. This one certainly was a doozie, but I'm closing it down.
  11. You guys are making me dizzy, I merged the two Fernandez threads. At least I hope it was only two.
  12. I'd give up Kepler. Really my only hesitation with him is that at this time he appears to be the only one of the young players/prospects for the Twins that appears to be able to avoid strikeouts and get on base.
  13. I don't think the Twins are ready to go all in and I'm not in favor of blowing up the farm to do it until we see what holes need to be filled once we see the team on the field as opposed to just on paper. If the Twins had Fernandez, I'd change my stance, the window would basically only be three years and some of the best prospects would be gone anyway. I also don't think the suggested price of Kepler, Gordon and Stewart would dissuade me from this deal either. I might see if the Marlins value Gibson instead though and try to save Kepler or Gordon.
  14. Agreed, Duffey is a guy who we didn't see coming, but when we see his stuff, it's easy to see that we should have paid more attention. I'm not sure that we actually need to see Dean pitch to know that a 89 MPH fastball an a sub 5.0 K/9 is an extreme long shot.
  15. Span can play center and get on base, he's going to get a bigger and longer contract than everyone expects I predict. The Twins need a right handed OF though.
  16. Good luck to Shane, with Brantley injured there's a good window for playing time. There were previous reports that the Twins were thinking of bringing him back. With lefties Rosario, Arcia and Kepler in the mix, I think it's almost certain the Twins will be adding a right handed OF bat. Whoever the guy is will play a lot with all those young lefties and there are some real good but unsexy lefty mashers likely available on a one maybe two year deal.
  17. While I agree that playing for the Marlins could certainly lead to attitude issues, issues with Twins players tend to disappear only because the player in question gets traded. Lohse, Garza, Gomez, Young, (Nolasco fingers crossed ); seems like a trend, not a coincidence. Also, Fernandez is from Tampa, if there is an attitude problem, taking him out of his comfort zone and bringing him to what the rest of the country considers the boonies, might not actually help the attitude. Not that I'm in anyway declining a trade for the guy.
  18. And average at best strikeout numbers. The Twins already have that in spades.
  19. Depends what the price is, I'd suspect it's high. If it's not, I think he can still be better than a #3. He still has a 94 MPH fastball and his strikeouts did rebound a bit last year, though not to the level one would hope. He really increased the usage of his cutter last year at the expense of his curve. I don't know what to make of that, but changing your repertoire during your age 24 season makes me think we haven't seen the finished product yet, I think he still has plenty of potential to become close to what people thought he would. Not much of a change-up though so Neil Allen votes no.
  20. I'm in the minority, but I agree about Michael. I really did not like the draft pick, and certainly he hasn't lived up to his draft status, but this guy has been getting on base the past two years. He can take a walk and doesn't strikeout much. He doesn't look overly special but he also doesn't look a whole lot different than Brian Dozier at the age of 24. I think a utility guy who can get on base gets selected and I can still see him being useful to the Twins. Also good point on Achter, Darnell and O'Rourke, are these guys with minimal MLB experience really more valuable than the guys behind them with no experience but a much higher ceiling? I like Tonkin's MiLB strikeout numbers and 94 MPH fastball enough to keep him though. Also agree on Harrison. I'm not giving up on him, but as far as I can recall, the only players who have been successfully hidden on rosters despite the need for more MiLB seasoning have been relief pitchers and batters who can play a premium defensive position. No one's going to keep a corner OF on the roster who can't hit yet. Even if he did get selected, so many guys are blocking him at the moment that we'd be destined to play the Rule V game with him the next two years too.
  21. His 89 MPH fastball scares me, but he's still getting strikeouts. I would have been OK with this as the prospect price would have been light. I'm guessing the 11M would have stopped the Twins, the most they've ever paid a reliever was 11.25M for Joe Nathan and K-Rod likely wouldn't be closing for the Twins. Initially.
  22. And that's fantastic, we wouldn't have a team here without dedicated fans. Fans can still be dedicated and still believe more can be done though. Asking the team to put forth a better effort or try a different approach to solve the problem isn't a slight on one's fandom just as asking the same from your child wouldn't make you a bad parent.
  23. I'm not sure that comparing records is really the debate here though. If we are using these teams for comps, aren't we comparing their approach? From that list, I'd say the Rays and the Pirates are the only teams that are year-in year-out conservative in nature. The other teams, regardless of success, have at least had a few moments of going big in the offseason or midseason. Even when the Twins had success, they never really came close to the top. Seeing as that is what we are truly trying to achieve, and the current conservative approach has not yet worked, I don't think it's out of line to ask them to try something new. Personally I still wait another year to go big because I think this team needs to wait until the core staff is headlined by young arms (knock on wood) and they shed some of the ugly veteran contracts (double knock) but I don't think it's unfair for those who are using the past as a bench mark, to assume that since the same people are in charge, changes to the approach aren't likely.
  24. I don't mean to demean Dean at all, simply he has a half dozen guys to jump over to ever be considered for the rotation and he has always had very poor strikeout numbers which should mean he isn't suited for the pen at all. He's got nowhere to go with the Twins, I really do hope he gets a shot with a team that thinks they could use him.
  25. I think the Twins should concern themselves most with number 3. Don't worry about trying not to lose a guy, only worry about losing a guy you actually want. To that end, let Dean go. Unless this team is reverting back to the Albers/De Vries days, there is no reasonable place for Dean on this team, if another team thinks they could use him, good for them and good for Dean, that's what this draft is designed for anyway, so teams can't hoard players they'll never use even if another team would.
