  1. I am excited for the Twins prospects, but I'm not holding on to all of them when the team could use them to get top of the rotation pitching. And you're right about Sale's value. He was considered one of, if not the best pitcher in the league. I'd give up the commensurate prospects to get a pitcher to win in the playoffs.
  2. I'm sure he'll play some DH (more than we'd want too) but Buxton and the Twins sound pretty confident he's going to be the primary CF this year.
  3. Not more bats. Better bats. And if anything, the Sonny Gray experience showed the opposite in the playoffs. They won playoff games 3-0, 2-0 and 6-2 while losing playoff games 6-4, 9-1 and 3-1. So they were 3 wins and 1 loss in the games they pitched well. They need a perennial MVP contending type bat for the middle of the lineup. They already paid Correa and Buxton, if they can't provide the offense, the bat will have to come from somewhere else internally. More bench filler free agents won't solve that problem. But, still more importantly, they need a second starter for the big games.
  4. I'd do everything I could not to clog up the DH spot, especially for a 24 year old. I mean, having too many good young players is a good thing assuming the team would leverage them for an area of need.
  5. The fact that he sounds willing is quite encouraging, even if he never plays another game off of 3B in his life.
  6. I know I've been the low guy on Lee, but this really is biggest thing where I'm at with him because I still think he'll be a decent at worst MLB player. Planning on an injury for a guy to get regular playing time, isn't really much of a plan.
  7. Yeah, wait until spring training when these types start accepting MiLB deals. They can get an emergency vet for St. Paul like they did Keuchel or Sanchez, but they shouldn't be adding more Keuchel's or Sanchez's to the MLB roster. But before everyone gets upset about this, Bob Nightengale didn't list any of those starters in his article, that was all MLBTR conjecture based on what the Twins were looking at prior to both the TV deal and the DeSclafani deal.
  8. Yeah, and he's also going to lose out to the others as far as athletic testing goes at the pro days and combines. He is my least favorite of the group, but, if he has the right attitude (or wrong attitude if this was most other professions) the QBs who hold a grudge often are the ones that end up being later drafted gems.
  9. The more steam McCarthy, Nix and Penix get, the more likely one of the top three guys fall, even if the top guys don't fall behind McCarthy, Nix or Penix. I could see one team at the top, if not more than one team, start getting starry-eyed about paring Harrison, Nabers or Odunze with one of the 'lesser' rookie QBs and trading back into the 1st round if required. Or pairing the stud rookie receivers up with Cousins, Mayfield or even Wilson to be competitive ASAP.
  10. Too early to tell. There's never been a year where everyone had the top three picks nailed four months ahead of time, and we're living in an age of contrarianism. The masses will be jumping on and off of the bandwagons of all of these prospects a half dozen times before the draft. Anthony Richardson and Trey Lance were late 1st rounders at this time during their draft seasons. Will Levis and Justin Fields were running with the top arms.
  11. I'd hesitate on Walker, but I'd do one of Lee or Julien, preferable Lee. They can't both play 2B anyway and it's unlikely all of these young guys will be stars.
  12. Interestingly, Lee ditched the majors for Cal Poly because his dad managed there, and Ripken ditched college for the Orioles because his dad coached there.
  13. I don't know, downsizing your workforce is like the first chapter of How to Run Your Business with a Lower Payroll.
  14. An injury might give him a chance, but they already have Farmer and Castro on the roster and this team loves to defer to the vets. Lee isn't going to make the opening day roster to sit behind those two, so I think for him to make the team, you'd need an injury to Correa/Lewis/Julien AND an injury to Castro/Farmer. And, obviously Lee would need to be raking in spring training. And even then, Martin is already on the 40-man, as is Miranda and Severino should the injury be to Lewis, and Prato can play every position and has been better offensively than Lee while being less hyped thus less of a concern in regards to wasting an option or triggering service time. Honestly, I think the odds of Emmanuel Rodriguez making the opening day roster is higher. He is on the 40-man and hits right handed. He'd likely need fewer injuries ahead of him to be a consideration.
  15. But the good (rich) teams should have fewer qualms about service time as they can afford to extend or retain the players should they reach free agency. If Jackson Holliday is interested in hitting free agency ASAP and chasing a 400M deal, Baltimore will likely have no shot at keeping him and will lose him a year early.
  16. Yeah, getting lost in a lot of this 'replacing Sonny Gray' talk is that no one is actually asking for a Sonny Gray clone. Those of us concerned with this issue are just asking for another top of the rotation arm. Doesn't actually have to walk like Sonny, talk like Sonny, get awards like Sonny or even pitch like Sonny. We want someone who the team can confidently run out to start one of the first two playoff games.
  17. I don't think the front office did this to send a message. But the only reason the front office would have put Nick Gordon on the 26-man roster was because he was out of options, they didn't know what to do with him and they were scared to lose him. And that's a bad reason to keep a guy. So, for my sports team, if I had to chose between a vindictive leader or a frightened and indecisive leader, I'd go with the vindictive one. But again, I think it was neither.
  18. I'm not saying the incentive hasn't worked, but really, it sounds pretty ridiculous. MLBPA: You owners have to start letting the rookies who are ready onto the 26-man rosters on opening day. Owners: But then the players will get an extra year of service time and we'll have to pay them more, sooner. MLBPA: What if we give you extra draft picks as a carrot? Owners: High draft picks? That we will have to pay about 3M, IN ADDITION to the rookie who's now going to cost more money? MLBPA: Yes. Owners; Deal.
  19. Still, this is the first time a team has gone back to back in 20 years. Even Brady let another team win it every other year back in the day too.
  20. I really don't think it's asking too much of a "contending" team to add to the top of the rotation to push the other good pitchers down in the order, instead of adding to the back of the rotation to push them up. If money's an issue you can do it via trade. The best teams in the league add to their rotations this way. This team has done it this way.
  21. 30+% K rate? Heck no, run far, far away. That’s poison to this current roster makeup.
  22. I hope not. Unless they're also trading Kepler. They won't be signing or trading for a GOOD right handed outfield bat, they'd only be getting one as a 4th OF. This team can't suffer more roster filler or just like last year they'll end up throwing games away early in the year while they let the aging vet bats stink up the joint while the more talented players are being wasted in St. Paul.
  23. Keep the phone lines open with Miami, but good move. Gordon was redundant and I like this guy better than the other guys picked up this offseason. But that puts 15 relievers on the 40 man. Only 18 bats. That seems like a bad ratio. Weiss seems the easiest to remove by far, but don't do it for another roster filler hitter.
  24. Manfred and the owners have been terrible stewards of the game for awhile now, but I'll give them credit for cracking down on awful practices such as this. John Coppella got a life time ban for the criminal international draft signing circumvention five years ago, but this has got to amount to the same punishment for a lesser crime. I can't imagine any team will touch Eppler now.
