But neither of them profiled as starters. At least not competent ones. Jax couldn't miss a bat in college let alone the minors and Sands FB topped out at about 91 MPH as a starter. At least guys like Ober and Ryan had something to dream on. If the velocity, repertoire, movement or control don't look like starter material, just make the switch in AAA. If a pitcher is missing just one of those things, becoming a MLB starter too rarely pans out.

Steinbrenner field it is. https://www.tampabay.com/sports/2024/11/14/interim-stadium-steinbrenner-field-yankees-tarpons-pinellas-st-petersburg/

If they are able and willing to let Prielipp go at least five innings regularly by May, I'm OK keeping him as a starter. If his innings are going to be limited again all of 2025, just make the switch now. But I completely agree with the premise of this article, while not always the case, this organization has waited too long with many of the starter-to-reliever conversions. If Sands or Jax had been converted a year earlier, that would have been one extra year of positive production out of the pen in place of negative production in the rotation. I think these situations should be treated like Occam's Razor, if the player is significantly more likely to end up as a reliever, just switch him to a reliever.

Griffin Jax to Move to the Rotation?

Yeah, I hate the cutesy plays, they've been happening too often in big spots. It also seems to me that when Darnold throws to Addision, he's missing him too often, and usually he's throwing too high. Jefferson *may* have come down with a couple of those, but all QBs know throwing too high is the best way to get picked off. I wonder if Darnold is in his own head thinking that going to Jefferson double teamed is better than going high too Addison. Addison doesn't have any drops though this year. I might try him in the slot more running shorter underneath stuff and trying to get him matched on a LB. If Jefferson is getting double and triple teamed, put your second best option on the same side of the field running the shorter routes and finding the vacated open spaces.

Yeah, I thought Cashman was 'just a guy' when they signed him, and with the team easily able to cut ties after the season, I figured he'd be one and done. He's probably the best player on the D though.

Twins Trade Candidate Breakdown: Griffin Jax
nicksaviking replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With ownership and the front office in flux, I honestly don't trust any upcoming decisions to be based on winning. As such, I'd rather they sit on their hands, bide their time and let the new people make the calls, whenever that may be. And yes, I realize that likely means absolutely nothing to the 2025 squad. I think baseball purgatory is our immediate destination regardless of any moves. -
Twins Trade Candidate Breakdown: Griffin Jax
nicksaviking replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd say no. Top catching prospects pan out less often than top pitching prospects. But regardless of position, my prerogative is not to trade our controllable assets for prospects. Replacing Jeffers is nowhere near the top of my priority list either, and the odds that Teel is better than him are probably fairly low, despite the enthusiasm. -

A young established catcher? Sure maybe. But I mean, he'd have to be better than Jeffers. A prospect catcher? I have no interest. -
Sounded like there was talk about using the Blue Jays spring training facility in Dunedin. Why isn't the Yankee's field in Tampa under consideration? It seats 11K and is probably the nicest spring training facility around. Are the Yankees that petty they won't lend a hand to a rival even though they set up shop in THEIR backyard and the rival is in dire straits? Also, while I enjoyed St. Pete when I was down there, it always seemed like the Ybor neighborhood stadium plan would have been the most attractive and sustainable.

Twins Trade Candidate Breakdown: Griffin Jax
nicksaviking replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What exactly are we hoping to get for Jax? Because I don't want more prospects. -
I agree, the strategy is usually to drum up interest by leaking who OTHER interested parties are. However, if there was a local buyer, and they were deep into negotiations, then I could see the cloak and dagger angle. So it probably all depends on this firm that is 'facilitating' the sale. Is this firm made up of underwriters and Title people? If so, then this sale is probably actually getting somewhere in which case they'd play it close to the vest. If these 'facilitators' are actually head-hunters, then they aren't even at square one and the hoopla hasn't even begun yet.

I really do like that they finally got off of the balance beam straddling between cap space hell and keeping their top veterans. However, it does appear they are now on a balance beam straddling between rostering their top veterans and building a long-term squad. I'm not throwing in the towel by any means, and it's definitely a better and more flexible beam, but I'm also not sure how they get down from this one without draft picks. And obviously without using their draft picks more wisely. Ten key free agents a season just doesn't seem sustainable.

Not defending him at all. I've said multiple times this is a questionable promotion. But this nonsense where if you like a guy you have to believe every move he makes is justified and well done and if you DISLIKE a guy you have to villainize everything that he does needs to end. It's not black and white, these people operate on a sliding scale. Just because you don't like Falvey, doesn't mean he's responsible for every terrible move this club has made. And I don't think there was non-communication between the front office, as I said, I think the operations side was naïve and oblivious to the changing economic environment of the game. If somebody better suited to the job was running the show, maybe there would have been a different game plan. Not sure Falvey is that person, and his resume suggests he's not, but in either case, I'm glad St. Peter is gone, because he and the Pohald's 100% pulled the rug out from under the baseball side of the equation last year. Even a casual baseball fan wouldn't give those contracts if they knew payroll is going to get slashed in 12 months.

I'm not sure about the vast majority, but I'd agree fan engagement isn't helping revenue currently. They've needed someone better at this for about two decades now. They've been marketing to Grandma and Grandpa in Grand Rapids for far too long, even though those two no longer make a yearly trip to Minneapolis and struggle to figure out how to work the Roku. I kind of assumed better fan engagment meant they needed someone with a marketing background. Or a college dropout with 10M followers on TikTok. So I'm suspicious about the efficacy of this move and think it's more about being a good soldier, slimming expenses and doing the dirty work ownership wants to make the club more attractive to a future buyer. Because I think lower expenses is more attractive to future buyers than current year-to-year revenue, because billionaires are likely only buying sports teams for their future valuation.

I'm not sure about parking specifically, after all Ramp B is right against the CF wall and Ramps A and C are right there and skywalk accessible. Could have a ramp feature, but I'd guess the developers (possibly future Twins-owner included) would drool over more mixed use high rise stuff like they just completed across from fifth street. Available North Loop properties might be the most desirable real estate to develop in the Midwest outside of Chicago.

I don't see how anybody on the baseball side would think extending Buxton, Lopez and signing Correa to long term deals a year before dropping payroll is a good idea. It seems significantly more likely that the operations side was out of touch and oblivious to the actual future the organization was headed. They shouldn't have been, but that seems to be by far the most likely explanation after cutting payroll despite having the most competitive roster in a quarter century.

Letting Sonny Gray walk and not having the means to replace him is what Falvey wanted? Count me skeptical about that. If nothing else, now we’ll know for sure that the baseball side knows what the operation side is doing.

I'll wait to decide on that, but I will say that if Falvey was given the green light for a higher payroll in 2023, but blindsided by the payroll yank of 2024 and beyond, yes, it's better to have someone making these decisions who is in control of the full picture.

Regardless how people felt about Falvey's work thus far, it always seemed odd how deadset he was to stick with a club that only promised lower payrolls. If he knew he was going to get a promotion though, that would make sense. I wanted someone with a background that included marketing wizardry or productive television negations for this role. I don't think Falvey is it, but I'm happy to try someone new I guess. These didn't seem to be St. Peter's forte in any sense.

Carlos Correa Trade Buzz Is Heating Up
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The offseason trades made under Falvey's watch have overall been pretty good. Polanco was bad (but a push), but most of the others were pretty solid. And that's presuming that Falvey was actually making the offseason and in-season trades. Likely it was Levine or mostly Levine, and quite possibly Jeremy Zoll, who is now being given back dated credit for past moves. -
Carlos Correa Trade Buzz Is Heating Up
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have no interest in moving Correa just so the team has payroll flexibility to sign two or three lower tier free agents. Honestly, that savings would go to do something like re-sign Santana and a starter like Andrew Heaney? Maybe a bottom tier relief pitcher too? That doesn't make this team better. -
Falvey is taking on his duties and Jeremy Zoll is promoted to GM. Surely there will be an article up in short order, but in the meantime, feel free to discuss.

You continue to think that KOC does Adofo-Mensah's job. This hang-up is getting really weird. I'll guess to cover this gaffe you'll claim the KOC is the one who is ACTUALLY making the decisions. And I still don't want Kirk Cousins. He never was the path to a Super Bowl and he's clearly the same good-not-great QB that he always has been. Ask Atlanta fans after he once again threw short of the sticks with zero chance at a 1st down with the game on the line.
