Front Page: 2019 MLB Trade Deadline Review
FormerMinnasotan replied to Cooper Carlson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Overall it’s a meh for me. I think Dyson will help out and be a more solid bullpen arm than Romo. I’m happy for what we traded for we didn’t overspend. That said, I’m disappointed we didn’t move on a starter. Robbie Ray or Mike Minor would have been legitimate upgrades to what we have in the rotation right now minus Berrios. While it might have cost some more in more legitimate prospects our FO has to understand that’s the risk you take when you have the “window” open for a deep playoff run (if not a championship). To me it still feels like the Twins FO stopped short. I’ll hope for the best, but I know you never should take a magical season like this for granted. -
Well, I guess the FO doesn’t care about winning a World Series much less making the playoffs this year. Our 1 move was for a mediocre reliever? If there was a “window” for a World Series championship the window is now. We are darn near championship caliber NOW. There’s no guarantee next year (or the next 5) will still be within the window of opportunity for a championship. Players leave, players get injured, prospects don’t pan out. When you have the opportunity to go “all in” for a championship you take it. This is beyond sad.

Just watch: Twins make no further moves, lose AL Central to Cleveland, miss Wild Card as A’s and Rays surge over a Twins team that from here on out loses steam. Next year we miss out on the playoffs with a pedestrian 81-81 record.

This is getting kind of stupid. We could easily acquire Minor or Ray yet here the Twins FO sits on their butts. Obviously even when the window is open to go for a World Series the FO won’t do squat. To aquire Minor it would look like this: Minor for Thorpe, Gordon/Rooker, and Colina. You could probably make a similar deal for Robbie Ray. Again how smart is it to do nothing and expect our minor league prospects to star and be key cogs of a World Series run? Most top prospects won’t even come close to meeting their lofty ceiling, isn’t just smart to deal some top prospects if a World Series is possible?

Sounds good to me. Better than trading for Lance Lynn.

So what’s the strategy for getting better starting pitching? Expecting Graterol, Balazovic, or Duran to pan out as an ace? If that’s the strategy then the Twins FO are a bunch of fools because there’s absolutely no guarantee any of the 3 mentioned pitchers will attain top rotation status. It’s more likely all 3 flop or like Gibson fall short of their potential. So what that means is the rotation for years could very well be Berríos and 4 #5 starters. That will not work to win a World Series.

And then once we regress when will the “window” be open for us to compete for a World Series? Will the FO even then be willing to make the call to “go for it”? This year is one of those years, so why cower and not make a big splash?

Another thing I’d like to add is while we should strive to be like the Tampa Bay Rays our minor league development hasn’t been great. Yes, it’s looking more like some of our position players are developing nicely (Polanco, Garver, Rosario, and Kepler), yet we’ve only sorta developed 2 quality starting pitchers in Berríos and Gibson (and Gibson is a stretch considering he was a potential #2-3 starter who is more or less a #4-5 starter). If we were actually better at developing talent I’d feel better of standing pat.

The question is this: Do the Twins want to go for a Championship this year or do they punt to next year and beyond? If they punt they are foolish because there are no guarantees the Twins will be better next year and beyond. Also, there’s absolutely no guarantees our top prospects will pan out so...it’s smart to move some of these prospects (like Lewis, Kirilloff, Graterol, etc) especially when there are several top prospects who play the same position (see Graterol, Duran, Balazovic, Kirilloff, Larnach, Rooker). To be real without a trade for another starter who can we trust in the Post Season w/ Berríos? Odorizzi? Not likely. Gibson? No. Perez? Again no. Pineda? Probably not. So it’s obvious that we need another starter. If not now, when?

Another nice start for Colina. I get the concerns of Colina’s height but as of now Colina owns a 1.04 ERA in AA (3 games 2 starts) and overall owns a 2.07 ERA overall. It seems Colina is improving and is transitioning very well from A+ ball to AA ball.

Article: Is Alex Kirilloff Expendable?
FormerMinnasotan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To answer question: yes Kirilloff is expendable. The reason is the Twins have another high rated corner outfield/1st baseman in Trevor Larnach who also is in AA right now. I mean it’s unlikely both Larnach and Kirilloff will be key contributors to the Twins in the future so it would be wise to sell either Kirilloff or Larnach while their stock is at its highest.- 31 replies

To be honest I’d love to deal Graterol. He’s too much like Fernando Romero for me. If we can get a big deal for him we should do it. We have two other starters who can touch 100 with Duran and Colina, and we have another potential top rotational prospect in Jordan Balazovic so Graterol is much more expendable at this point.

We have enough higher end minor league talent that we could make a bigger splash than just a trade for Romo. I mean we could afford to move some of our top prospects. We don’t necessarily need both Trevor Larnach AND Alex Kirilloff since they play mostly the same position. Likewise we have the flexibility to trade either Kohl Stewart or Lewis Thorpe as both could potentially be in the mix for a MLB rotation in the near future and aren’t terrible starting pitching prospects. Lastly it might be wise to trade Brusdar Graterol before he has no value (like Fernando Romero or Stephen Gonsalves). With the emergence of Jordan Balazovic and Jhoan Duran as potential top rotation staters I see Graterol’s star kind of dimming, but MLB Scouts are still high on him we have enough talent like him to trade him (assuming we get a good return for him).

Enlow is looking less and less exciting as a prospect. I was hoping for the hype surrounding him the last 2 years he’d deliver a little more than he has.

I guess that’s why I’m happy Thorpe is in the bullpen right now. I’m sure he’ll make some mistakes, but in my mind nothing is better than facing live MLB hitters. Sure tonight Thorpe lucked out, but I’m sure even with 2 scoreless innings pitched Thorpe will have gained some more confidence and probably will have somethings the coaching staff will further work on with him.

First off I wonder how big a pitching prospect Edwar Colina really is? I’ve been interested in him since his succesful season last year between Cedar Rapids and Ft Myers. It’s apparent that he’s got some legitimate stuff with his fastball and slider. I just wonder at 5’11” if his body can withstand the stress of starting pitching while maintaining his power stuff? I guess if Colina transitioned to the bullpen it’d be fine, yet right now he looks legit as a starter. Also with the promotion of Duran to Pensacola is it time to promote Luis Rijo to Ft Myers? His w/l record isn’t great, however Rijo’s stats outside of w/l seem to paint a picture of a decent pitching candidate. As of late Rijo seems to really finding a groove and it seems all cylinders are firing for him. What’s surprising is the uptick in K’s. For a more “pitch to contact” type pitcher Rijo’s uptick in K’s seems to suggest a growth in Rijo as a starting pitcher.

I know we’ve been talking about moving up Duran from Ft Myers, but Edwar Colina has a pretty compelling case as well. I mean Colina has pitched enough time in Ft Myers that he should be moved up to Pensacola. If not for his early season injury he’d be in AA right now IMO.

It looks like Landon Leach is a complete bust at this point. He barely pitched the last 2 seasons and this year apparently won’t pitch at all as he’s been moved to the 60 day DL. What happened to him?

For his debut Thorpe looked awesome. He had very good control and IMO better command than most who make their MLB debut. I just hope now that with this positive experience in the Bigs that he can go back and start pitching with greater consistency in Rochester so at worst he can earn a September call up.

I’d say the same for Balazovic. For the most part Balazovic has made the case to be moved up given he’s still been dominant and showing few weaknesses in Ft Myers.

Great seeing Thorpe pitch another great start. He seems like a head scratcher though. I mean he seems to generate a lot of swings and misses but at the same time is very homer prone. As much as I love Thorpe as a prospect I am cautious on bringing him up too soon. I feel he’s still got to work on cutting down on the homers given up otherwise he won’t be a capable starter in the Bigs IMO.

So what’s the time table for Tyler Wells’ return? From what I heard his injury wasn’t serious, he just needed time to get “up to speed”. He’s one I’m interested in seeing this year considering his dominant 6 AA starts from a year ago.
