  1. I was being sarcastic...my apologies for a lack of sarcasm tag or font. I was also only going with the players he mentioned in a trade. On the serious side though, I agree with what you said completely.
  2. He's saying that instead of 4/5 of the starting staff being inadequate, only 2/5 would be! Except those two would still have quite a bit more upside.
  3. I believe Robbie Cano had a sports hernia during this time that wasn't dealt with until after the season, IIRC.
  4. So we can't have a preferred batting order because the pitching sucks? I agree that the pitching is the bigger issue, but I still see questionable lineup construction and have a preferred construction of said lineup.
  5. This would be my preference too, but then there's the issue of where Mauer bats. Even at this point in his career, he's wasted in the 7/8 hole. Push Vargas/Park down?
  6. This is the key here. They've got to generate interest heading into next season without giving away the farm. It's not about being aggressive so much this offseason, in my view, but about being right. Do enough to get this team trending in the right direction, and then the next offseason can be more aggressive in filling holes as this team matures. It's that delicate balance that requires some patience and a feel for what is needed when it is needed. Hasty decisions this coming offseason could be disastrous.
  7. I think this a point that gets glazed over too much. Change for the sake of change is bad. Change with an actual goal in mind is what needs to happen. If you execute that phase and still fall flat, I'll take that over simply making an aimless change any day.
  8. If you read my initial comment you quoted, I specifically state just one of the corner outfield spots would strike out a lot. Nowhere did I state anything about the rest of the lineup. The context was the outfield corner spots. I never mentioned Schafer at all. Not sure where you got that.
  9. That isn't the point being made. The rest of the lineup wasn't being discussed.
  10. Plouffe tweaks the oblique again... Silver lining is that someone else gets his playing time the rest of the year.
  11. Better than one named after a fish.
  12. I believe the discussion was about Palka and ABW in the same outfield.
  13. I'm sure that it's far less highbrow than this one.
  14. Wouldn't penile dysfunction lead to Rusty Kuntz? Or at least contribute?
  15. Bigger crowd? Here or Target Field?
  16. Ok, that doesn't change my opinion one bit. Scoring runs isn't the problem, stopping the opponent from scoring them is. I'm personally very tired of seeing this team lose 15-9. My 5+ WAR 2B isn't getting me wins, but perhaps he can net me a starting pitcher than can. This isn't the NBA, one man teams don't work. In his two 5+ WAR seasons, this team will come close to losing 200 games. Neat! There's nothing sexier (in baseball anyway) than wins. It's not about WAR, HRs, whatever. It's about W's. This team needs pitching more than it needs a 5+ WAR second baseman.
  17. No, but it's easier if you believe this one season is an outlier rather than what he's going to be for the rest of his contract. He doesn't have to replace him stat for stat. The replacement can fill a completely different role with the team with others stepping up to fill the void. That's the beauty of team sports.
  18. Agreed. Even if he does put up ace type numbers, there's still a large amount of improvement needed elsewhere in the pitching staff. I can't rely on that happening, and neither should the FO. Any improvement from Berrios should just be considered a start towards a solution.
  19. I think that the frantic nature in which this was apparently written had me as equally frantic reading it. In retrospect, that might be the purest way to read this intro. Read as the writer had written it. I like it!
  20. The question I would have then is, can a team coming off of a 100 loss season afford to do very little to improve a pitching staff that will finish near or at the bottom of every statistical category? That's basically what they did last season. I'd expect Berrios to improve. I'm not sure what to expect out of Gibson at this point. So if Berrios turns the corner, that gives you a rotation of Santana and Berrios and at least three giant question marks. That's still ignoring the bullpen...again. Since the FO didn't make any moves, I was hoping for improvement from within heading into this season. I wasn't thrilled with that approach last season, and I'm not willing to go down that road again. After five 90+ loss seasons out of six, it's time for a different approach. Something needs to change.
  21. I don't disagree with any of that. They should be targeting an impact arm. That's the point of dealing Dozier at peak value.
