    No worries, it's been a friendly discussion. My biggest concern this year has been the mismanagement of the prospects when they're up here. Kepler didn't get a legitimate opportunity, Polanco has been abused in my opinion, and Meyer's treatment was a disgrace. Get these guys up and play them. Sitting them on the bench makes no sense at all. I do agree that wins still count for something, but not for the sake of playing veterans over kids just to win. It's more fun to win, it's more fun to watch them win. I'll take losses now to get those guys experience so that they can hopefully win a whole lot more in the coming years or even later this year. Being 40 games or 45 games out at the end of the season isn't a whole lot different.

    Fair point, but not giving them innings and taxing that same beleaguered bullpen was exactly what got him outrighted to begin with. That's why he's is in AAA and not on the 40 man. That wasn't even a month ago. You're more confident in him providing that than I.

    There's nothing wrong with admitting failure. It happens. Not admitting failure and making it worse trying to avoid admitting it is a much bigger problem that only makes things worse.

    I don't disagree with anything you said here. I'm not suggesting that you bring up the same guys that have struggled unless they've earned another shot already. I'm merely stating that we know what we have in Milone. He provides no hope in my mind. He's not going to be a part of the future and is more of the same with what this team already has in the rotation. They should be taking this time to see what they do have in the system. Play the Polanco's and Kepler's when they're up here. Give Meyer a real opportunity. I would have liked to see at least one more start from Berrios. Potentially exposing someone on the 40 man to waivers for the sake of adding Milone back makes no sense to me. Wins this year mean absolutely nothing. Work towards the future and play the youth. That is what provides hope to me.

    Even if they get an extra win or two out of Milone, what exactly does that get you? At least with youth, you're giving them MLB experience. Giving innings to Milone is a waste of time. Putting him back on the 40 man roster to get him those innings is misguided even if he is the best option to make changes in the rotation. He's not going to be a part of the future, the youth is. This team needs to realize what they are.

    The only thing I'd change with this would be that I'd like to see all of those guys up in July. At this point however, a full fledged youth movement would be welcome. That would at least be a display of some sort of plan.

    I agree with most of this. The mismanagement of Kepler and Polanco have irked me more than anything else this season. Meyer's situation is right up there as well. I just don't see TR using the Arcia's and Polanco's of the world as currency like this. It's unfortunate because they don't seem to have a spot in the future.

    This has been my biggest gripe the past two seasons. There appears to be no plan. When this team was supposed to be on the uptick with young talent, they refused to play them. This year, they bring in the likes of Ryan Sweeney and Carlos Quentin that did nothing but take away PT for young players to gain some experience. Yes, ST experience, but experience nonetheless. They've been stuck between rebuilding with a youth movement and signing veterans to try to contend resulting in a plan with no clear direction. Now that this season is a mess, last weeks' moves and Molitor's reluctance to play the youth on the roster make it clear that a youth movement isn't going to happen. That is what troubles me the most.

    Exactly. Pick a direction and go with it. Doing both (or neither) isn't going to get you anywhere.

    I'm generally one to say that managing is overrated - not unimportant, but overrated. Jim Leyland once said, "I give the players all of the answers to the test, but they still have to take that test." That being said, I'm pretty alarmed at the level of unpreparedness and stupid baseball shown this year. Much of that is on the players, but the coaching staff needs to get these guys preparing the correct way if they can't figure it out themselves.

    While I agree with this, the issue I have is that they weren't even given an opportunity to show what they can do. They gained nothing and lost playing time. I don't see how that is beneficial at any angle.

    Well written piece. Even though I'd prefer both Molitor and Ryan be replaced, mid-season is not the time to do it. I just don't think it would help anything especially at the GM level. I just worry that the mismanagement of players will continue. That's my big concern.

    Great post. They seem to be stuck in the middle of a youth movement and still trying to sign veterans with little to no value - which irritates the heck out of me. Mauer isn't going anyway, that's pretty obvious. He can't be traded and he doesn't really deserve to be cut either. He's not a 3 hitter anymore and I don't care what position he plays because it's meaningless at the plate. I would have moved Mauer to RF instead of Sano and played Sano at one of the corners before I moved him to the OF. I liked the Nolasco signing and still think it was a good move that simply didn't work out. It happens, but they need to move on. He's blocking younger talent that deserve to be on the roster and gives the team a higher chance of winning in the long term. Pelfrey was in the same scenario. Didn't mind the initial signing, but hated that they brought him back. They showed too much willingness to keep throwing him out there when you have kids that could be learning how to win at the major league level instead. That's what I'm talking about being stuck in the middle. Either stick with aging vets or go with a full out youth movement with a few veteran backups to help guide the way, not something in between like they're doing now.

    I feel this way anytime a position is referenced in regards to offense. None of that matters if other positions fill the role.
