  1. Pitch two: Possibility # 4: He hammers it somewhere. Hope pitchers continue to throw 3 straight balls after all of his 1-1 counts for the rest of the year. Can't hit any homers unless you take a big hack now and then. I said he'll still be homerless on May 25th. I guess we'll see!
  2. I was not disappointed with the result of Mauer's 7th inning at bat on Monday. The first pitch, he was taking all the way. He did not even gear up - to the slightest bit - in anticipation of a possible swing. The second pitch was right down the pipe, and most cleanup hitters are trying to destroy that ball. Not ours. Good result that the pitcher choked up and couldn't find the plate versus a guy who had no intention of ever swinging. Hope that continues!
  3. Love how he came up to bat yesterday with the bases loaded in the 7th inning and didn't even swing once during the entire at bat. What a cleanup hitter!
  4. Mauer led all of MLB in least swings at strikes in 2016 (qualifying ABs). Makes perfect sense to have him hit cleanup! Maybe there's a chance he might even hit 11 HR and 49 RBI again! God willing, right? LOL. Guy with 42 HR and 99 RBI? Better hit him leadoff.
  5. This team is willfully making poor decisions. Makes perfect sense to hit the 42 HR / 99 RBI guy in leadoff, while your cleanup guy is 11 HR / 49 RBI, right? Name one other team in this universe that would do that.
  6. First game of the season and the stubborn Twins continue to insert the 42 HR/ 99 RBI guy in leadoff. Now they have the 11 HR / 49 RBI guy at cleanup. LOL.
  7. True. Have to consider that he won't even pass him. He didn't in 2014!
  8. Bumgarner hits 2 on Opening Day. Mauer will still be homerless on May 25th - guaranteed. Mauer's 3rd will come in July.
  9. I liked how Reusse pointed out how players were rolling their eyes upon hearing that Park was cut. Just going to keep running 11/49/.389 SLG out there.
  10. A few things: I predict Joe, of all qualifying MLB 1B, will rank dead last in % of swings at pitches in the strike zone - same as he did last year. I predict Joe, of all qualifying MLB 1B, will rank dead last in % of swings at pitches - period - same as he did last year. You can't produce if you don't swing the bat. Having said this, and after he has continued to demonstrate he will not change his approach and swing hard at strikes earlier in the count, even with runners in scoring position, I predict his production will slightly decline. 2017 Prediction: HR: 9 RBI: 45 SLG: .375 OBP: .350 Pitiful numbers for a starting AL 1B. I predict a lot more excuses will follow.
  11. Mauer hitting in the 5-hole today. About time; should be more like 7.
  12. They should give Grossman some reps at 1B before they head north.
  13. Mauer's third AB tonight was typical Mauer. 5 pitches, 0 swings, 40 cleat rakes in the box, 10 squints, 1 reverse K and 1 comment to the ump on the way to the dugout.
  14. I don't know what Mauer has to be surprised about. Gene Larkin (1987-1993) career averages G: 108 AB: 332 H: 88 2B: 19 3B: 1 HR: 5 RBI: 38 BB: 38 K: 40 OPS: .723 Joe Mauer (2014-2016) combined season averages G: 137 AB: 514 H: 137 2B: 28 3B: 3 HR: 8 RBI: 57 BB: 69 K: 100 OPS: .733 Need a manager who will limit his play, accordingly. His acceptance of that is completely unimportant.
  15. 1,086 ABs in the past 2 years prove that the Twins are OK with it. The production has decreased; the playing time should also decrease, respectively. Call it "keeping him fresh" if you may. I don't care what it's called. If he's not being productive, he should have to ride the pine and prepare himself for becoming more productive later - whether that's physically, mentally, whatever. Seems like a bunch of fans are recommending a significant cut in playing time. Not a bad thing. If the Twins could find a way to maximize his output, that would be great.
  16. Yes, "less is more" is his whole mantra. "I'm just taking things slow... not trying to do too much." - Joe Mauer * Less effort * Less training * Less production * More excuses
  17. This is true. However, if the baseball player hits primarily in the 3- or 2-hole, has no speed element to his game, and fields a position (like 1B) where you should insert a heavy bat, the lack of extra-base hits and RBI become all the more critically harmful. If Mauer played an elite fielding position (like CF, SS or C) and stole 30 bags, all of these arguments for his OBP would be valid. His hitting approach (take 5 pitches per AB) would be great if he was a speedy leadoff hitter. For a 3-hole hitting 1B, you need the guy to knock in some runs and he is simply not doing that. 49 RBI is ridiculous for a 6'5" AL 1B with 500 ABs. He needs to be platoon-only at this point. That being said, I'd be excited to see Mauer perform better as well. I rooted for him like crazy when he was on fire last summer for those few weeks.
  18. Palka getting some ABs would be sweet. He has some great bat speed and whip. Powerful swing.
  19. .800+ OPS stats were cited twice for Joe's 2016, but those were not his full season's stats. OPS was like .750-something. Also noteworthy were the following meager stats: * 11 HR * 49 RBI * .389 SLG
  20. "Joe Mauer will play a lot of first base..." ------------------------------------------------------ Sad. Mauer expected to be at 1B again? Anyone care to ask him what his 2017 goals are? Let me guess... the goal is to simply "feel good"? What's the point of having him in the lineup so much if he can't demonstrate that he can produce extra-base hits and RBI? Question that every MN sports reporter asks Joe: * "How are you feeling?" Why even ask how he's feeling? Guy just lies anyway. Ask the guy a real question for once. Anyone who is covering the Twins this much really need to address a few things with him. Would like some actual reporting on Joe, rather than trying to be chummy. Example of a few simple questions that no MN reporters DARE ask Joe Mauer: * "Joe, have you done anything different in your training this off-season this year in order to increase your power or bat speed?" * "Why aren't you producing?" * "What is your plan for getting more RBIs and extra-base hits this year?" * "How is the "blurred vision" coming along? Doing any better? Why did this story come out shortly after you reported "feeling good" in consecutive spring trainings? Why did you wait 2.5 years to tell the media (let alone team)? Why did you get 500+ ABs with vision problems? Do you predict you will see the ball any better in 2017? Seth, I challenge you to ask the guy a few tough questions this spring.
  21. Just 3 years ago, Joe had 4 HR, a number in which was equaled by an NL pitcher. I predict another pitcher will tie his HR production this year. His last year's numbers of .389 SLG and 49 RBI sound about right. He is due for a good excuse, though. Can't wait to see if he can top last year's one (was a classic): * "I've had blurred vision for three years and have never thought to report it to the team."
  22. Right but now you're counting part-timers. Of course Mauer would rank higher than all of those who played less (actually not the case). There were only 23 MLB 1B with a qualifying amount of plate appearances in 2016. Joe was: * 22nd in HR (2nd to last) * 23rd in RBI (DEAD LAST) * 22nd in SLG (2nd to last) That's an F.
  23. Right, but there were only 23 MLB 1B with a qualifying amount of plate appearances. Still an F for me.
  24. On this forum, he gets a generous grade. Back on planet Earth, a .389 SLG, 11 HRs and 49 RBIs -- for a 3-hole-hitting AL 1B -- equal an F.
  25. Dozier (primarily leadoff): .546 SLG, 42 HR, 99 RBI. Mauer (primarily 3-Hole): .389 SLG, 11 HR, 49 RBI. Name one other team that is this stubborn.
