  1. No one is saying there isn't doubt because ultimately it's a bet on the future which can't be predicted. But the main thing is that he was coming from a 'Twins have to draft for need' angle which is not how this particular sport works like it does in the NFL or NBA. I personally wanted Zunnino. I just want this pick to flourish, it would hurt too much for this pick not to. Zunnino is so much clearer of a picture of what you're getting that he seemed like the more appropriate investment, though I know Buxton's ceiling is significantly higher. If Buxton is the next Matt Kemp, that's fine by me. But you're right there is a much higher variance of possible outcomes with a supremely talented 19 year old than a guy who has spent a lot of time already developing on a college's watch versus the organization's.
  2. mlhouse, this isn't the NFL. There's a lot you can criticize this organization for right now, but you're really up the wrong tree.
  3. I'm assuming I'm probably the only person here who is hoping for Zunnino. I know Buxton and Correa have higher ceilings, but I'd prefer the most developed position player.
  4. You can get good pitchers elsewhere in the Top 72 where the Twins have 5 picks. The #2 needs to be as close to a sure thing as possible. If the best player was a pitcher by a mile by the time June comes around, then sure. But that doesn't appear to be the case here. A lot could happen, but right now I think Zunino's the guy.
  5. Over Zunino? I just want the best player available. If this really is a deep draft, I would rather take a sure thing position player up top and use 3 of the next 4 picks on pitching. Pitching is just so volatile in terms of outcomes. I'd rather get the best position player available.
  6. Unless there's something missing in my math, the Tigers appear to me to have no business having a $132 million payroll. I know Ilitch's bank accounts are probably bigger than everyone else in Detroit's bank accounts combined, so I think he's fully aware that he is running an unprofitable business in the hopes of a title. And if he puts a winner on the field, hopefully that creates more customers for his casino next door anyways. Good for Tiger fans. I'm jealous.
  7. I still don't see why you would do that. You would do that to increase your chances of finding at least 1 certified stud. Kalil is about as close to a sure thing as you can reasonably expect given the information. Just take the stud particularly when he's fulfilling a glaring need.
  8. They also that he, ya know, catches too.
  9. Oh hello Joe Nathan's 95 MPH Fastball. It's funny meeting like this after all this time.
  10. That was probably because the bases were just loaded. That way you get Ozzy's "ALL ABOAAAARD!!!!" call before the riff kicks in.
  11. It's a very perceptual point to make. Baseball is a game of variance. .300 hitters don't hit 3 times every 10 ABs on cue. Stuff varies. Competition levels vary. Psychology varies. To pile on to the variance and go chicken little after every 4 game skid, then talk World Series after a 5 game hot streak is silly and cowardly. But yes, it is human to react that way. I just think a quacky point about character deserves to be held accountable when it's exposed as the charlatan's ca-ca that it is when it is decisively contradicted less than 48 hours later.
  12. Great stuff. Sorry to stickle, but I've seen Jered Weaver's name misspelled on this site in multiple articles.
  13. After back to back comeback wins we can all conclude this Borzi article was a hack-job waste of everyone's time now, right?
  14. Some guys just know how to get the save. #yesthatisinfactsarcasm
  15. He walks in with "Sad But True" by Metallic. And it certainly is.
  16. The 2012 Twins can't 'first to third' anyone to death when no one is getting on first.
  17. Yep. Oh... and this is Game 4 of 162.
  18. I see that. I'm also seeing on Yahoo's box score page. Must have been wishful scorekeeping.
  19. What is the score? Yahoo says that Carroll scored on a wild pitch in the 3rd, meaning it's 2-2, but no one else agrees.
  20. Matt Kalil is undoubtedly the right pick given the information. I didn't hear Spielman say that about LTs, but if he did I would imagine it was mainly for the purpose of not tipping his hand. Trading down for the purpose of taking a quarterback 2 years in a row in the first round is stupid, Matt Millen stupid.
  21. I share in your frustration. But when people I love whine about things like this, my annoyance gets aimed at the whiner, not the policy.
  22. If someone doesn't want to go to a Twins game with me because they can't smoke, I'm more annoyed with their misguided, unhealthy, expensive addiction, not the Twins.
  23. Hopefully I can sneak out of work early as it's a market holiday in addition to being Opening Day. Maybe I won't introduce myself. I'll just try to start a bar fight spouting non-sense about Carl Pavano's win/loss records, the Twins Way, and how players 'need to tough it out and play hurt' more often.
  24. All he really needed to do was admit that he came back from his knee surgery way too soon. He wasn't healed yet, he had no power coming from his lower body in his swing and the bad communication made him seem like a softy in a big hockey market. He really did need to get out in front of it himself, and he didn't. The talk radio evaluation of his toughness is incorrect, but his inability to get out in front of the message fell on his shoulders.
