  1. At this point, it seems pretty clear that the big splash, if there is one, won't be Liriano. I would guess a borderline prospect at best. If there is a splash, it will be that the Twins tough bargaining position on Span, Perkins, Morneau and Willingham will pay dividends on one of them. Having said that, I am fully prepared for this trade deadline to end with a wimper, not a roar.
  2. Agree. I can't imagine that anything above a AA prospect would be an option for Liriano. Having said that, those listed seem promising.
  3. A long reliever someone who can successfully get through the batting order once, meaning that they can throw strikes and mix pitches enough to keep hitters off balance for a first at bat - but don't have the stuff to dominate. A four or five pitcher is a strike thrower, pitches to contact and can mix pitches enough to keep a team close through 6. They don't dominate, but they eat innings. I don't think there is much difference between a four or five other than one may be better at all of the above and maybe have more experience. AAAA pitchers are pitchers who are essentially 4-5 starters at the AAA level. They don't have the stuff to achieve at MLB level. The difference between a long reliever and AAAA is that a long reliever can miss bats, meaning they have at least one pitch that can generate strikeouts. How many cliches did I get in there?
  4. Should be interesting. More than anything, we need guys who throw strikes and are not overwhelmed by the big leagues. At 27, they need to see what they have in Mr. DeVries.
  5. Seems like Swarzak and Duensing need looks in the rotation. I would brings these guys up to fill their spots in the bullpen. At this point, why hurry back Blackburn, may want to consider putting Pavano on the DL if his arm doesn't respond and possibly give Hendriks another shot. I think it is time to end the Marquis experiment and get our young arms up to the big club.
  6. Dozier! What a game today.
  7. How great is it when the video montage foreshadows the home run blast!
  8. Here is a question that reveals my lack of knowledge of NL baseball. Is Pavano still the pitcher of record right now even though he was pinch hit for before the Twins took the lead in the 7th?
  9. We have ourselves a shortstop my friends.
  10. Great at bat by Dozier. Questionable strike call did not phase him, fouls off some tough pitches at 0-2 and generates the sac fly. That is not the at bat of a rookie.
  11. Just has not been the Twins M.O. to compete for top notch pitchers in free agency and I have to say I agree with it. Multi-year deals on starting pitchers is an albatross just waiting to be hung around the necks of management. I would much rather see the Twins add starting pitching through trades or by developing them internally. If the Twins are willing to bite the bullet, they may be able to get a fairly high level pitching prospect for Span. The only problem at this point is that none of the CF prospects in their system seem to want to be the heir apparent. Revere, despite my earlier misgivings about him, might be the only guy who could begin to fill a void left by DSpan.
  12. Even though there is little hope of competing, how fun is it right now to see the team string a few wins together with young talent contributing and our boppers delivering. It's too long a season to be wishing for draft picks.
  13. Tigers defense looked horrible in this series. Fielder is a major liability at 1st. How long until the Tigers go get a 3B, put Cabrera at 1st, and put Fielder in the DH spot.
  14. I think the more interesting topic is whether we are at the beginning of the end of the long term high dollar contract. Mauer and Pujols might be exhibits 1 and 2 of why long term, high dollar contracts may quickly become a thing of the past. It will also be interesting to watch Fielder's performance over the life of his deal. While Fielder has been fine - you have to wonder about what his performance will look like in the later years. His dad, who as we all recall had a similar physical traits as Prince only had about 8 productive years total in his career. If at the end of the year we look at these three deals and see what the performance has been and then look at Josh Hamilton - it will be interesting to see if he gets a deal that approaches that of these 3 guys.
  15. I agree with the moves and the change of focus as you describe it. There are guys producing on this team - we should invest in them and move on those who are not. The amount of energy and expectations set on these two is exhausting and dragging the entire club down. Sometimes addition by subtraction is the way to go. The moves don't completely cut ties, but they send a message to these players that it is now or never for them in a Twins uniform.
  16. Span is the only player I see us getting anything close to 2014 MLB ready talent in return. Pavano, Liriano and Capps will not likely anything more than long term prospects or AAAA journeymen. Any chance that Willingham or Doumit might be dangled? Doumit is also in the same camp as Pavano, Liriano and Capps - but Willingham could draw real interest. If we are really looking at a long term rebuild, it makes sense to consider all our options.
  17. I don't think we are going to see any movement on Blackburn or Liriano for awhile. Both have had flashes of competence that will continue to tease management up until at least the All Star break. Frankly we are more likely to see prospects when Pavano gets dealt.
  18. Is it me or is the depth in relief pitching an emerging strength for the team? I would say the major league relievers have been one of the few bright spots and then we see the progress of Guerra, Slama, et. al. in the minors and it is beginning to look like this is one area of optimism for the club.
  19. I just hope he is not the second coming of David McCarty or Scott Stahoviak. We need a young guy, with power in the lineup. I am guessing the pressure of a new season and higher expectations is weighing on him a bit. Hopefully with some expanded playing time while Morneau is shelved will help.
  20. Liked what I saw of Dozier and Komatsu (until the 9th inning blunder).
  21. Jayson Werth just broke his wrist - increasing the urgency for the Nats to find a replacement. Would not be surprised that the Twins get a call today. Agree that the Twins need a ransom for him, but it is time for Twins to be honest about the next couple of years. While Span could be a part of the future - the one area of relative strength in the system is outfield. Revere could be a transition centerfielder with the hope that Benson makes the final step soon. The Twins do have a history of developing centerfielders and have to believe they can do it again. Remember both Torii and Denard were far from sure things and struggled mightily at first when they made the transition to the bigs.
  22. Proud to say that I called these moves. I think Carroll goes to a utility role with Casilla staying in the lineup. I would expect Carroll to get consistent time at 2nd, short and 3rd.
  23. Got to be the starting rotation. Hendriks needs to go down and Diamond needs to come up. Liriano should get one more chance and if he can't get it done - he needs to dealt, even if it is bargain basement. We can then give Swarzak a chance and bring up Slama or Guerra. Lineup - all for Mauer moving into the two slot, moving Carroll to utility role and bringing up Dozier - why not give the guy a chance. Drop Maloney.
  24. I'm wondering if the next move will be to bring up Dozier and put Carroll in the utility role. What is the date when the Twins can bring him up without losing a service year on him?
  25. Let's be clear - Joe Mauer is and will be the face of this franchise for the balance of his contract. He knows it, Gardy knows it and management knows it. While probably every piece will change around him in the next two years, I fully expect him to be in the lineup almost everyday as the one constant that will bridge this franchise to the future. Like Killebrew, Carew, Puckett/Hrbek before him - Mauer is who people will come to watch, win or lose, as the Twins rebuild. I am not surprised in the least that he is playing everyday and playing at a high level.
